How To Train Your Dragon Los Angeles Premiere

Eclipse star Boo Boo Stewart showed his pride for shelter animals by wearing a shirt that read, “For The Love of Dog Adopt” to the How To Train Your Dragon premier.

Although adoption is always in need, taking in a permanent extra family member isn’t the only way you can help your local animal shelter.

Volunteer, promote an adoption drive, become a foster parent or donate money to cover costs of food, litter and other supplies and services.

For the love of dog, just do something!

Update: Boo Boo’s t-shirt is made by Leanne Hilgart of Vaute Couture. The 100% organic cotton shirt is available in both men’s and women’s and can be ordered through Vaute Couture’s website.

“The Butcher And The Vegetarian” Explores Ethics Of Meat Eating

The Butcher and the Vegetarian

The Butcher and the Vegetarian

The Butcher and the Vegetarian by Tara Austen Weaver starts off with every vegetarian’s nightmare.

Although Weaver grew up a health conscious vegetarian in a family that kept “jars of bean sprouts on its windowsill,” she starts to eat meat on the advice of a doctor when she became ill.

Yawn. How many times have you heard that advice from a M.D.?

A butcher gets her hooked on the drug after wrapping up her very first chicken and she progresses to steak, t-bone and other parts from the animal kingdom.

But she can’t do so without constantly ruminating about her decision’s impact on animals and the earth and although she seeks grass fed and free range  for her refrigerator, the more she learns about how meat is produced, the more she thinks about going back to tofu.

Chicagoan Michelle Obama New York Pizzeria Visit Smells Fishy

President Obama Delivers State Of The Union Address

Michelle Obama, daughters Sasha and Malia and grandma Marian Robertson went out for an afternoon of pizza tasting recently at a New York pizzeria.

The first lady may have lost a few fans in the Windy City, when she said of her New York pizza, “It’s the best pizza, and I’m from Chicago.”

Ouch!

Someone in the group ordered a personal sized vegetarian pizza with mushrooms, sweet peppers and onions…plus a side of anchovies.

Yeah, it was almost too good to be true, and while eating pescatarian’s a step forward, it’s better to leave those fishies off the pizza.

After years of overfishing to satisfy everyone’s pasta, pizza and pop in your mouth snack needs, the family of salt water fish have landed on the endangered list.

The next you order pizza, pass on the anchovies like you would the pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon and ground beef.

You wouldn’t want Isabella Rossellini giving you “the talk” about fish on the green porn channel.

Operation Smile's 8th Annual Smile Gala - Show

Besides Boo Boo Stewart‘s raving about his mom’s Japanese style tofu, the Vegetarian Times was able to catch a few other celebrities at the Genesis Awards to find out what their favorite dish was.

Moby loves the vegan tacos at Real Food Daily as well as the vegan sushi at Souen in New York.

Nicole Lapin sounded as if she’s a fan of old fashioned comfort food, as she had plenty to say about the meals that were prepared during a “Fabulous faux” dinner party she hosted, featuring “you wouldn’t believe it’s vegan” versions of American dishes.

SXSW 2008 Day 4 - Austin TX

Billboard reports that the annual SXSW (South By South West) festival in Austin drew record numbers with 13,022 registered music industry professionals.

And while 100,000 people were expected to attend the 10 day music, film and networking event, official figures are still being tallied.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a vegetarian musician fest offered annually?

Just think of all the great award winning acts that could take the stage, not to mention the great food to eat at the concessions.

Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders would ensure seitan and not roast beef sandwiches would be sold to hungry fans.

The smooth sounds of hip hop artist Erykah Badu could combine with jazzy DJ skills of someone like Moby for an evening of soul topped off with a hearty helping of UK women Joss Stone and Leona Lewis.

Singer songwriter Nellie McKay controls the piano, indoors or outdoors.

And another day could be reserved for the meatless rockers like Joan Jett, Boston’s Tom Scholz and Queen’s Brian May.

Meatless music fanatics with an entrepreneurial spirit, can you make this happen in the future?

“Future Food” “Burger Wars” Corn On Cob Faux Chicken Nuggets

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 29th, 2010 in Film & TV, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Health Food Junk Food

Future Food, a show challenging two chefs to make food that’s more environmentally friendly, premieres tomorrow on Planet Green.

On a future episode of Future Food titled “Burger Wars,” a faux chicken nugget is created using tofu and corn on the cob.

Although there aren’t any birds in the recipe, 4 eggs are called for.

4 ears of corn (whole, on cob)
1 pound of tofu (firm)
1 cup of hickory wood chips
1/2 gallon of water
4 eggs
1 tablespoon salt, plus additional for seasoning flour
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
Vegetable oil

The eggs are added just before the patty nuggets are formed, so more than likely they serve to keep the mixture together instead of adding any substantial flavor, which indicates this might work well with a vegan egg replacer.

Planet Green has advice for those without a smoker:

“A makeshift smoker can be made by putting your wood chips in the bottom of a deep “hotel pan,” which is a large rectangular pan with tall sides, and a similarly sized hotel pan with perforations placed on top of the wood chip pan. Heat this over a flame until wood starts to smoke, add your items to be smoked, and cover with a lid.”

“The pancakes are whole-wheat flour and oat bran and almond milk and a little baking soda. I think I added some peaches — whatever I have lying around. In winter it’s only frozen fruit. People who are used to IHOP pancakes — big and fluffy — they would be disappointed. I had an ex-girlfriend; when we were breaking up — one of the few endings of a relationship that was a bit contentious — one of her parting shots was having her tell me she never liked my pancakes. I thought that was very cruel. Insult my sexual prowess, my intellect, but not my pancakes.”

—-Moby, in the New York Times, on his vegan pancakes. Moby was featured on Epicurious (video above) awhile back demonstrating how he whips up his not big and fluffy, but still delicious pancakes.

If you promise not to say anything bad about them and send Moby into an ego disaster, grab the recipe and try them out for yourself.

Chanel - Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

Alex Guarnaschelli, the executive chef at NYC’s Butter restaurant, has made the rounds in the celebrity chef world, including competing against Cat Cora in Iron Chef America, and judging on the Food Network’s Food Network Challenge, Chopped and The Best Thing I Ever Ate.

But none of these experiences beat preparing food for some of her favorite celebrities, like Prince, who has a thing for eating seasonal vegetables at 3AM.

From Popeater:

“I love Prince. He comes here whenever he’s in town. He’s a vegetarian, eats very late at night and we go back a few years with my 3AM vegetarian meals for him. Just bringing him plates and plates of local vegetables is one of my favorite celebrity interactions I’ve had. Watching this firecracker of a person eat my food is incredible.”

Although some data suggests frozen may be equal or better than fresh as far as nutrition goes, nothing beats a crisp, fresher from the garden local veggie like a green bean sauteed in olive oil and sprinkled with organic herbs.

Whether you eat your veggies at 3AM or 3PM, what’s your favorite local treat to cook in the kitchen?
