Michael Pollan On GE Alfalfa And Organic Milk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 in Farming, Food & Drink.

Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan, food activist and writer, is one of several people attaching their names to a letter written in response to the USDA approving genetically modified alfalfa.

Roudup-ready alfalfa, produced by Monsanto and Forage Genetics International, is said to yield faster-growing strands and fewer weeds with every bale, but opponents say the crops have the potential to contaminate nearby organic crops and lead to the development of herbicide-resistant pests.

Alfalfa isn’t (normally) eaten by humans. It’s primarily fed to cows. So what does that have to do with vegetarians? Pollan thinks organic milk could be in jeopardy.

“Consumers don’t eat [genetically modified] alfalfa, of course,” Pollan said, “But it’s the main feed for dairy cows. And organic milk, one of the most successful and popular organic foods, could be compromised if the organic cows eat non-organic feed.”

Portia de Rossi

Portia de Rossi has written a book, Unbearable Lightness, which details her struggles with an eating disorder that began in her early teens.

Now a vegan, de Rossi used Unbearable Lightness to discuss how a change in diet was an extension to her spiritual and emotional wellness as thinking about the cruelty of eating animals allowed her to think less selfishly–an emotion that consumed her when she was constantly obsessing over her personal appearance.

“While I have never felt more healthy and energized, the most important thing that happened to me when I stopped eating animals was a sense of connectedness. When I was suffering with an eating disorder, my life was solely about me. I was living through my ego and didn’t care about life around me. I was selfish and angry, and because I didn’t care about myself, I also didn’t care about littering in the street or polluting the environment.”
