“Relationships are complex things and to hinge them on just one aspect doesn’t make them any easier. In this world there are perfectly wonderful people who eat meat and then there are some unpleasant people who are vegan. What is most important if you’re a vegan dating an omnivore is that this person is respectful of your lifestyle choices. And if they’re millionaires and gorgeous, more power to you.”

Terry Hope Romero, vegan Latin food queen and author of several vegan cookbooks, including Viva Vegan!, Vegan Cupcakes Invade Your Cookie Jar and Veganomicon.

No, not not every vegan is opposed to loving a meat eater. Some even recommend it, as there’s opportunity to share the food in your world with someone who normally wouldn’t be exposed to it.

Still not comfortable making the pizza half veggie and half meat with your lover? There are numerous vegetarian and vegan dating sites online.

The actor best known as the bartender in Cheers uses Oceana as a platform to draw attention to the problem of actions that threaten the health of the world’s waters, among them overfishing, climate change and pollution.

Along with colored photos, graphs and other images that illustrate the problem, the 320 page hardcover book from Rodale Press also gives advice for stopping the changes that will ultimately destroy the stability of our waters.

Danson appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to discuss his new book and the issue of bycatch, which is marine life like sea turtles are unitentionally caught while trying to catch other organisms.

Jonathan Safran Foer Interview With Edible Manhattan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 18th, 2011 in Authors, Flexitarian, Food & Drink.

Jonathan Safran Foer

Jonathan Safran Foer‘s non-fiction book on his investigation of factory farms is so convincing, even his publicist doesn’t cook as much meat as she used to. The Eating Animals author recently interviewed with Edible Manhattan where he shared the fact that although one of his most popular books is all about food, he can’t go anywhere near it to be productive.

“I have to go somewhere where there isn’t food or I wouldn’t get anything done,” Foer said.

Here are a few other highlights:

Farmers Won’t Eat The Hotdogs They Helped Create:
“I talked to many, many different kinds of farmers while doing my research and one constant, whether they were a small farmer or a factory farmer, was that they all said they would never eat a hot dog. It seems to me a pretty good idea not to eat things that farmers wouldn’t eat.”

When a 19-year old woman slammed her sister’s pet hamster onto the floor, ASPCA animal police arrested her, charges were filed and she spent a night at Riker’s Island prison.

Yet this type of behavior occurs in farms around the country routinely. One group’s random undercover cruelty investigation found abuse in all 10 of the chosen farms or slaughterhouses it chose to visit.

Mark Bittman discussed this irony in one of his recent New York Times column, “Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others.”

Meatless Mouthful–Kathy Freston Defines Veganist

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 in Authors, Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful.

Kathy Freston "Veganist"

“A veganist is someone who looks closely at all of the implications of their food choices — to his or her own body, to the animals, and to the environment — and then chooses to lean in to a plant-based diet. The suffix “ist” means “one who does” or “one who studies,” so a veganist takes what he or she learns and puts it into action by eating things that grow on trees or in the ground. All of this said, the word is intended as a soft word, a forgiving word. It’s all about progress, not perfection.”

Kathy Freston, author of Veganist, on her gradual transition to plant-based eating. Is Freston trying to redefine the word “vegan” so it occasionally includes animal products or advocates “cheating?” Probably not. She’s simply trying to show people that vegan means adding different things before you subtract. And this might be a better way to ensure success with the diet. And if you slip in areas like diet or fashion, it doesn’t mean you’re a vegan failure. After all, it’s a word for foods, not people.

Alicia Silverstone‘s vegan diet, lifestyle and cookbook, The Kind Diet, has been released in paperback form.

The paperback edition contains the same useful information about transitioning to a vegan diet, whether you’re interested in eating a few vegan meals a week or going totally raw. The Kind Diet also educates readers on the animal welfare and environmental reasons that motivate some to go vegan.

What’s great about the paperback edition is that it was created in an environmentally friendly manner. The book uses soy ink and is printed on recycled paper. Not only does soy ink produce less harmful chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOC), it also makes recycling the paper it’s printed on easier because soy ink  is easier to remove from printed paper.

As expected, Silverstone is touring to promote the paperback edition. Check out the dates below to see if she’s coming to a town near you.
