Heather Mills VegNews “Person Of The Year”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Heather Mills leaves 'This Morning' TV Studios after a cooking demo - London

Heather Mills has been named “Person of the Year” by the readers of VegNews magazine.

Heather’s been a busy person, giving her time to the animals and the planet through both charitable and profitable actions.

Heather gave 2009 a little momentum when she started working with Hunts Point Alliance charity and donated over a million dollars of vegan food to impoverished families in the Bronx in 2008.

Continuing to work with the charity in 2009, Heather gave vegan cooking demonstration to the same families.

Then, Heather turned restaurateur, buying and renovating an old fish cafe and turning it into a vegan restaurant, V Bites.

Between managing V Bites and working with Hunts Point, Heather found time to participate in local food festivals and teach how easy it is to cook with veg food.

She acquired Redwood WholeFood Company, a maker of vegetarian cold products, including faux meats and cheeses and launched an eco-friendly clothing line made from recycled materials.

And she still finds time to raise a child who’s already started her activism career.

Great year, Heather.

Here’s to an even greater 2010!

“No matter what city I’m visiting, or where I’m going, I check out happycow.com and healthydiningfinder.com to find the best veg*n restaurants in that area. That’s how I even discovered soy cheese pizza at the rim of Grand Canyon!”

Elvis Presley “Circle G Ranch” “Don’t Be Cruel” PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Jailhouse Rock

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is asking the current property owner of Elvis Presley‘s old Circle G Ranch in Horn Lake, Dennis McLemore, to lease the site to them in order to use it as a Don’t Be Cruel Education Center For Children.

“This would be a good way to let kids know the truth about how cows are suffering before they’re turned into burgers or blue suede shoes,” said PETA spokesman Ashley Byrne.

The property went up for sale a month ago and the asking price is $6.5 million, according to real estate agent Rodger Motz.

In a letter to McLemore, PETA said, “in honor of the King and cows, PETA would like to turn the ranch into a ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ center to educate students about how smart and sensitive the animals we eat really are, and why a vegan diet (no meat, no eggs and no dairy) is kindest for animals, the Earth and even our own arteries. Elvis would have benefited from going vegan, that’s for sure.”

Motz said McLemore is “not interested in leasing it to those people,” referring to PETA.

McLemore currently keeps cattle on the land, but is looking to turn it into resort property or residential development.

Joan Jett

Inked Magazine, headquarters for all your tattooed news and needs, is featuring Joan Jett as part of their Inked For a Cause section.

Joan spills all the details on the social causes that are most important to her, and gives props to her favorite charity, Farm Sanctuary.

“There is a personal tie because I love animals, and feel a connection with them. I became aware of Farm Sanctuary’s work and wanted to help. Farm Sanctuary has 2 farms where they bring the animals they rescue. One is in upstate New York and one is in California. I just went to visit overnight in New York, and it was an incredible experience! I met my namesake, Joan the pig! I really enjoyed meeting all the animals. I highly recommend the experience!”

When asked what particular way she wants to encourage Inked readers to live, Joan responded:

“To become vegetarian, or vegan. I am vegetarian, I have fluctuated between the two, but my goal is to be vegan. It helps the animals and the earth.”

Singer Pink–Alecia Moore–Kangaroo And Frog Troubles

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Pink Attends A Songwriting Master Class At The University Of The Arts

Pink is a vegetarian, card carrying member of PETA and animal activist and lover in general.

But lately, the singer who’s real name is Alecia Moore, has been having some troubles with animals-either in her sleep or when she’s conscious.

“I dreamt the other night that I smuggled two kangaroos home from Australia and they trashed my house and my dog Bailey was terrified,” Pink said. “Bad idea!”

But dear, why are you taking wild animals into your home anyway? A trashed home could be the least of your worries.

The second incident involved a frog that wanted some face lovin.’

During a recent bike trip with husband Carey Hart, the two stopped on the side of the road to, ahem, “relieve themselves.”

“They were relieving themselves by the road when a frog jumped up and hit Pink bang in the eyes,” a source said. “She freaked.”

Lessons learned: Don’t smuggle animals, especially ones that belong in the wild into your home. And don’t pee on a frog’s property as he’ll want to protect his turf.
