Ginnifer Goodwin Just Not That Into Converting People To Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 15th, 2009 in Actresses.

Actress Ginnifer Goodwin hosts an evening at Prive in Las Vegas

Although Ginnifer Goodwin used to be a cheeseburger lover, she doesn’t crave those anymore. But that doesn’t mean cares if someone else does. From the editor’s blog at W magazine:

“So many people say to me, ‘I tried, and it was too hard,’ or ‘I had to cheat,’ and I always think, ‘Then it’s not right for you,'” Ginnifer said.

“You shouldn’t have to try. For me there’s no “try” involved. There’s nothing I want less than a piece of cheese or a burger. I have nightmares I’m being force-fed these things. I have no interest in converting anyone. It’s purely how I want to live my life. I don’t judge anyone.”

Ginnifer took some flack for posing in leather and silk for the W magazine shoot, which her cousin and Humane Society of the United States coordinator, JP Goodwin, explained to readers in the comments section on a post at supervegan.com.

What do you guys think of judgemental vegans? Should people make more effort to educate and change the diet of others. Or will this only turn people away?

Baseball Player Prince Fielder Appears at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

We love our veggie athletes, like Georges Laraque, so much, we can’t stop talking about them.

Which is why we’re proud to bring you “10 Superstar Athletes Who Don’t Eat Meat”, courtesy of treehugger.com.

First base man Prince Fielder made the list, along with famed vegetarian bodybuilder Bill Pearl, football quarterback Joe Namath, and Iron Man champ Dave Scott.

“Dave Scott holds the record for most Iron Man World Championship victories ever (along with his rival Mark Allen, who managed to rack up an equal number of wins). The Iron Man competition, which consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26 mile marathon run, is one of the most strenuous physical feats in the world. And Scott won six of them, all while vegetarian. He even came out of retirement at 40 to compete again, and took second place. Today, at age 55, he still participates. In other words, this is one gnarly vegetarian dude.”

There’s just one problem, dude. Where’s Mac Danzig?

The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner and UFC contract holder has been a vegan since 2004 and has always been public about his diet to major media sources like Men’s Fitness

Ah, we get it. Someone must have drafted him before Treehugger got dibs.

Siouxsie Sioux Of The Banshees Needs VeganCats.com

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 15th, 2009 in Female Singers.

Vivienne Westwood catwalk show and celebrity audienceSiouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie Sioux & The Banshees has two darling kitties she loves dearly, but can’t stand making homemade cat food for them because she has to handle chicken.

“One of them got ill and now he won’t eat cat food,” she told the Times Online.

“I’m a vegetarian and now I have to go to Waitrose and get corn-fed free-range chicken for the little f***er. That’s all he’ll eat. I’m just waiting for the day when he decides he’s off the chicken and it’s got to be duck!”

Siouxsie Sioux, whose real name is Susan Janet Ballion, says she’s trying to teach her cats to use the toilet via Litter Kwitter. Good luck with that one!

While it’s been traditionally thought that cats need meat to get essential nutrients in their diets, some vegan cat food products have hit the market, including those sold at Vegancats.com.

The key is that these foods contain taurine, which is vital to a cat’s health.

Of course any changes to an animal’s diet should be discussed with your vet.

Ginnifer Goodwin Reveals Moment She Gave Up Dairy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 15th, 2009 in Actresses.

Celebs at the Metropolitan OperaWe all remember that pivotal point in our lives when we turned vegetarian or vegan. Whether it was one last Thanksgiving meal or getting sick from a bad cheesy dish or watching a documentary on animal cruelty, the decision to go veg is often as memorable as first jobs or wedding dates.

Big Love and He’s Just Not That Into You actress Ginnifer Goodwin explained to W magazine’s editor what her defining moment for veganism was.

“We were filming the road trip episode of this season’s Big Love and we were staying in a hotel. I was doing a lot–and I mean a lot—of yoga at the time, and I’ve heard it’s not uncommon for something like this to happen when you are in a stage like that. Anyway, I was having my morning coffee, and I was pouring milk into it, and all I can say is that I suddenly realized what it was that I was pouring into my coffee. I was so disgusted, because I had never actually stopped to think about what milk is. And dairy had always been my favorite food group! I thought, ‘Surely this feeling will pass,’ but at lunchtime I was still disgusted. Over the next few days, I started really thinking about what I was eating.”

Can you remember the exact event that served as the catalyst for you go to go veg?

Simon Cowell’s Got Puppy Love

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 15th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Simon Cowell King of mean American Idol judge Simon Cowell can no longer continue to play the Dr. Evil cause we know he’s just a big ol’ softie.

Simon recently gave an interview with PETA where he talked about everything doggy related-from buying purebreeds to adoption to animal care and cruelty. When the subject of past Idol contestant’s involvement in animal issues came up (like Carrie Underwood), Simon even joked that they’d have to put being good to animals on the audition questionnaire.

Here are a few tidbits:

We see a lot of dogs chained outside like bicycles, for life. What is your message to people who do that?

That’s disgraceful. The awful thing about what that person doesn’t realize is that in the dog’s mind, as he’s being chained up … that dog has put his trust in the person who’s chaining him. That dog would give up his life nine times out of 10 for the person who’s chaining him up. … For a dog, under those circumstances, just to be left alone, starving to death, lonely and thirsty, is about as low as a person can go. You’ve got to have a really warped, disgusting personality to want to do something like that. That really disgusts me.

Do you think it’s important to adopt a dog or cat rather than buying one from a pet store?

Well, I mean, if I was buying a dog, I wouldn’t buy it from a pet shop, I’d go to a rescue shelter. Or I’d go to a friend who couldn’t take care. … It’s not where the dog came from, it’s the dog. … I get really annoyed when people start telling me about the make and the model of their dog like [for] a car. … A dog is a dog, no matter what background they’ve got. … Often, the mutts, the strays have got more personality than a highly bred pedigree.

Jorja Fox Gambles For Change At Humane Society Casino Royale

Pokerstars.net and the Hollywood office of the Humane Society of the United States recently got together for an evening of gambling, vegan snacks, and fun.

Actress Jorja Fox looked lovelier than ever as she played her chips and cards and fellow veggie actress Shannon Elizabeth was also dealing a sharp hand to help the animals.

Proceeds from the “Casino Royale: Playing for Change” event went towards implementing the Los Angeles HSUS’s End Dogfighting program, which educates high risk youth about caring for pit bulls versus putting them up for dogfighting. The program has already proven successful in other large cities like Chicago.

This past weekend’s event included blackjack, roulette, craps and poker, a martini and wine bar, gourmet vegan food catered by Madeleine Bistro, a silent auction, and a celebrity poker tournament.

Wonder if vegan poker great Daniel Negreanu made an appearance?

Alicia Silverstone Is A Raw Snickrz Kind Of Girl

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 14th, 2009 in Actresses, Business, Chefs, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Stormbreaker - UK Film PremiereVegan desserts are a weakness for anyone. From Uncle Eddie’s cookies to So Delicious Ice Cream to Amy’s new vegan cakes, you could easily rack up the grocery bill is sugar coated goodies and forget all the other “essentials” you came for.

Alicia Silverstone apparently is just as mortal as the rest of us and is a big fan of “Snickrz,” a cake made with chocolate, peanut butter, caramel and nuts.

We know this because raw foods chef Stephen Hauptfuhr has told all to the Los Angeles Times blog. Hauptfuhr opened a raw vegan foods catering company, Mooi, after hosting dozens of dinner parties at  his home and realizing that he could charge his friends, but he could make even more money charging others (haha, uh, we added that last revelation).

Some items on his catering menu include beet fettuccine with cilantro pesto and chocolate chili tacos with marinated greens

Oh, yeah, let’s not forget about the desserts, which are sold at the Elf cafe in LA (makes us think the Keebler elves went vegan and quit to work for someone else).

Soon Hauptfuhr will be opening his own cafe.

Adam Lambert Snakeskin Boots Not Idolized By Animal Lovers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 14th, 2009 in Fashion, Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

American Idol front runner Adam Lambert visits Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in CaliforniaThe final two American Idol contestants, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, have been chosen to duel it out onstage next week in front of millions of viewers. Sorry Danny Gokey fans, if you taped the show and haven’t watched it yet.

While we love our Idol contestants and are cheering for both, it’s necessary to call one singer out for his choice of clothing.

Lambert wore snakeskin boots during his recent public appearances (look at the feet, click on the pointy arrow so the small pics aren’t covering them up) including the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.

While he may have chosen the right songs every week, according to Simon Cowell, Lambert definitely chose the wrong shoes that day.

Whether it was leather with snakeskin print or real snakeskin hide, neither combination is worth idolizing.

And Lambert didn’t mention anything about the boots being faux, so we can only assume, unfortunately, it’s the real deal.

Just hoping his guyliner comes from a company that doesn’t test on animals.

Maybe Adam will follow the lead of other Idol contestants like Carrie Underwood and go veg, lose the boots, and gain an understanding of the cruelty involved in using animals for clothing.

Until then, he’ll be in our bottom three for awhile.
