Eco, vegan chef and author Bryant Terry is now officially unavailable in the line of single, vegan men who can cook to save the Earth and satisfy an appetite. Terry married Jidan Koon this weekend at the couple’s home in Oakland, California.
The couple loves to cook, combining foods from both African and Asian cultures, and for their engagement party, Terry and Koon created Afro-Asian Jung, a soul-food twist to a traditional Asian tamale-like food “jung,” that wraps a plant-based filling inside bamboo leaves.
“While glutinous or sweet rice is traditionally used to give jung its trademark stickiness, we used three kinds of rice to add color, texture and depth of flavor,” writes the couple at Hyphen Magazine. “For additional filling, we used peanuts (a staple of African and African American cooking as well as a symbol of long life for Chinese), black-eyed peas (a symbol of good luck for African Americans), and shiitake mushrooms (a symbol of longevity in Japan and China).
Morrissey has sparked controversy again, this time being accused of making racially inappropriate statements describing Chinese treatment of animals in circuses and zoos.
During an interview with Simon Armitage, Morrissey said, “Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.”
A spokesperson for Love Music Hate Racism called Morrissey’s statements “just crude racism” and wants the singer to rescind his comments.
“When you start using language like ‘subspecies’, you are entering into dark and murky water,” Martin Smith from Love Music said.
Comments Off on Whole Foods New Private Label Based On ‘The Engine 2 Diet’
Whole Foods’ CEO John Mackey recently told USA Today that the store will be unveiling a new, private label line next year that famous vegan firefighter and author Rip Esselstyn would approve of.
“We’ll introduce a private-label line in 2011 based on the healthy eating book The Engine 2 Diet,” Mackey said. “We’ve licensed that brand. It’s vegan (no animal fats) with no canola or safflower oils, and low in sugar and salt.”
The line offers products similar to what Mackey eats, but he insists that has nothing to do with its creation.
“Though that is the way I live, it is not my personal lifestyle driving this. We think it will be a good product category for the company.”
Looks like vegs will be ringing in the New Year with another option in good food.

Lincoln O’Barry is the son of ex dolphin trainer turned activist Ric O’Barry, who was a major player in the movie The Cove. On Animal Planet’s Blood Dolphins, Ric returns to where The Cove was filmed in Japan and brings along his son Lincoln as the work side by side to expose dolphin slaughter.
Lincoln spoke to The Futon Critic on his like father like son passion for educating the world on marine conservation. It’s not a lie to say the dolphin industry isn’t linked with strong tradition in Japan. Perhaps that’s why there was so much opposition to The Cove finally getting it’s premiere in the country. Lincoln explains that the first three episodes of Blood Dolphins cover some of those traditions.
Comments Off on “Double Rainbow” Live Photo Gallery Paul Vasquez Eats Vegan (Video)
Paul Vasquez, otherwise known as the “Double Rainbow” guy in the Microsoft Windows Live Photo Gallery commercial told Fast Company he’s currently working with an agent to star in a TV film pilot about his life living in the wilderness.
Vasquez, who further complicates the aliases after saying he likes to be called “bear,” said the pilot will highlight his life in martial arts, vegan eating, losing weight, building his home using alternative materials, using alternative energy, and organic farming.
Interestingly, Vasquez says he’s been living on about $5,000 a year for the past few years. He hasn’t made big bucks off the Live Photo Gallery commercial yet. Guess you can say he’s still waiting for the pot of gold at the end of the double rainbow. If he’s eaten vegan during all these years, it would be great to have him demonstrate cheap, natural animal-free eating on the pilot as more questions burn the mind on how he survives.
