Treehugger posted a video from a talk given by Moby and Miyun Park, the two co-editors of the book about factory farming, Gristle, during one of their book promotion appearances.

Moby reiterated what he’s said before in interviews about how subsidies to big farms not only make it harder for people to buy healthier, organic, plant based food, but contribute to more destruction of the environment and more animals killed, as these subsidies are also used to start new farms.

Moby has previously estimated that beef would cost around $30 a pound if subsidies to the meat industry were removed.

Definitely no longer a value meal at McDonald’s, that’s for sure.

Lyman VS. Niman Debate Generates Heat From Vegetarian Author

Lyman VS. Niman

Lyman VS. Niman

The debate over whether you can be a good environmentalist and still eat meat recently took place between former rancher and author of Mad Cowboy, Howard Lyman and Nicolette Hahn Niman, author of Righteous Porkshop and wife of Niman Ranch founder Bill Niman. The event was co-sponsored by VegNews magazine and Earth Island Institute.

Although both authors agreed that factory farming is devastating to the environment, their views differed, of course, in the impact of small farms on the planet and the ethics of raising and killing animals for food.

Michele Simon, author of Appetite For Profit, took the opportunity on Alternet to use her stance as a vegetarian to give counter arguments for how, regardless of environmental impact, eating animals cannot be justified and there is no “humane” meat.

She mentions Lyman’s argument that keeping animals in better conditions before slaughter does not make the killing any more acceptable, comparing it to keeping Jews in “5 star hotels” and feeding them “lavish meals” before being sent to death during the Holocaust.

Simon uses a similar ethnic argument, playing upon Niman’s opinion that it’s better to keep animals in good conditions on ethical farms than to have them fend for themselves in the wild.

“This sounded chillingly like the arguments for slavery. You know, blacks were really much better off getting free room and board and they weren’t treated all that badly were they?”

The Dome 54 - Red Carpet Arrivals

Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi has expressed concerns for the vegetarian menu Leona Lewis has put on her tour that she’ll be supporting.

Cilmi told Digital Spy:

“All I know so far is that the food’s going to be vegan, and I’m not sure how I’m going to cope with that. I’m not a huge meat-eater, but I need it sometimes for energy! I’m really excited about it actually, because they’re going to be the biggest venues I’ve done so far in the UK.”

Before Gabriella sticks her tongue out at veggie food, she should do her research in between those awesome Donna Summer moves she’s practicing for the stage.

Plant based protein can provide her with just as much, if even more energy as the chicken sandwich she’s used to munching on.

A McDonald’s hamburger, for example, contains 12 grams of protein, while a serving of seitan contains almost twice as much–22 grams!

Not to mention less than 2 grams of fat versus the 9 found in a burger, plus no cholesterol to keep Gabriella fitting into those sexy outfits that make you actually want to show up early for the opening act.

Leona Lewis Aims For Vegan Once A Week

Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Leona Lewis and Alicia Keys at the Silver Rose Weekend in LA

You’ve heard of Meatless Mondays, a campaign encouraging people to eat vegetarian just one day a week.

Will we soon see a movement promoting less dairy and eggs, called Vegan Thursdays?

Leona Lewis told Modern Dog magazine that she eats vegan one day a week, in addition to being a vegetarian the other six days.

“I am a vegetarian. I don’t eat meat or any fish, and I do try to be a vegan at least once a week where I don’t drink milk or eat cheese or eggs. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was twelve.”

The dairy industry isn’t without environmental impact.

Research on Ireland farms found it takes 3.59 to 6.7kWh per cow each week for milking, with a large part of electricity use going towards cooling milk and heating water.

There are humane arguments to using less dairy, such as the conditions female cows in factory farms must endure when they are unable to move and forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk during their lifetime.

Will your next step in going green be to cut dairy during the week?
