Seattle News - February 21, 2010

Growing up as a vegetarian, Olympic medalist Bode Miller and his family often took to the garden for their food needs.

“We grew our own produce.,” Bode said. “It was all organic.”

When Bode grew up, he continued the farmer’s tradition and bought an organic farm in New Hampshire

“I didn’t buy the place with the intention of making millions off it, I just like the idea of having a piece of land that is mine and that I can do whatever I want with as I grow older.”

Gorgeous red ripe tomatoes can be seen in the video below where Bode gives his thoughts about sustainable food and farming.

Bonnie Hunt “Bonnie Hunt Show” Promotes Pet Adoption

58th Annual ACE Eddie Awards - Arrivals

Bonnie Hunt features a pet adoption segment twice a month on her daytime talk show, the Bonnie Hunt Show.

The animals get their own video promos on Bonnie’s website, along with their background information, which makes it look very similar to an online dating service.

Maybe that’s why Hunt’s adoption feature is such a hit.

From Tails Inc.:

“It is entertaining when you see all these dogs and hear their stories when the rescue people come out and say, “We found this one at the railroad tracks, and we named her this. She’s about 2 years old, and we don’t know her story.” They try to figure out the mix. And then you just see some great family with three kids come and pick up the dog. It’s great.”

Growing up, Hunt and her mother welcomed a slew of animals into the home, even though her father was a little apprehensive about it.

“My dad would say, “We can’t do this. Not another one.” And then he would love them more than anybody. That was the whole premise of those Beethoven movies I did earlier in my career, where I played the mom who was like, “We’ll take the dog and hide it from dad.”

Fast-Food Restaurants Cater To Late-Night Hunger

CBS’ Undercover Boss features the lives of people in executive positions at well known businesses as they attempt to blend in taking entry level positions and working alongside employees.

As expected, the first few days on the jobs don’t always run smoothly.

Dave Rife, owner of White Castle, goes undercover and accidentally ruins batches of hamburger buns.

On a more positive note, Rife suggests to an employee that suffered a heart attack that the company will start a wellness program.

Sounds great, but only if the program rewards the employee with eating less from the job.

A plant based veggie burger is a bigger investment towards reducing health care premiums than access to a company treadmill that the employee will jump off after 30 minutes, only to scarf down several animal fat filled double bacon cheeseburgers at team member price.

Health rewards points are great.

An employee discount card at Whole Foods is even better.

Vegan Soul Kitchen Author Bryant Terry Discusses The Gut Reaction

Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry

Bryant Terry, chef, food activist and author of Vegan Soul Kitchen, has offered his thoughts on getting people to eat better.

Terry describes the process as starting from the “visceral” and ending at the “political” level. This means appealing to people’s basic needs first by making sure the food on the plate is palatable.

“Visceral meaning that first gut reaction, where you’re sitting around the table and eating delicious food!” he said “We’re working towards good food at the table and ending the negative perceptions around healthy food and a plant-based diet.”

The last stop, of course, is at Capitol Hill.

“The ultimate goal is towards helping people organize to make policy changes. That means supporting small farmers who are doing things right, and not continuing to support the large-scale producers who damage the public health. And then actually following through with that [on a greater scale] by getting the populace to put pressure on the policymakers.”

Jorja Fox Backs End Dog Fighting Campaign

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 1st, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Genesis Awards 2009

Jorja Fox is speaking out against dog fighting, backing a campaign by the Humane Society of the United States that aims to end the cruel sport.

According to Contact Music, Fox told People.com, “The more you know (about dog fighting), the less you want to know. It’s terrifying. When I heard about this project last spring, I called the Humane Society and said if they wanted help, to call on me. It’s a brilliant program.”

Fox said that although most people think of pit bulls as the only victims of dog fighting, other dogs are often in danger.

Fox said the program by the Humane Society works to help at risk youth realize there is greater value in owning an animal than having it partake in violent activities.

“Pit bulls are smart and healthy – they can do so much. So the organization works to get kids showing that off, and getting excited about that, instead of falling into the dark side. Dogs like Malteses and Jack Russell terriers end up getting stolen in communities where kids are dog fighting, used as training material for the pit bulls. It’s awful.”
