Michael Pollan Favorite Food Rules: Sometimes You Need To Fake It

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 12th, 2009 in Authors, Flexitarian, Food & Drink.

Quintessentially Host A Special Screening Of Magnolia Pictures' "FOOD INC"

Last March, Michael Pollan asked readers of the New York Times Well blog to submit rules for healthy eating habits.

After over 2,600 responses were taken, Pollan picked his favorites.

We’re liking some of the responses, like not leaving the table until you’ve finished your fruit.

However, we’d have to disagree with reader submitted rule #6:

“Never eat something that is pretending to be something else; eg., no “texturized vegetable protein” or veggie burgers (fake meat), no artificial sweeteners, no margarine (fake butter), no “low fat” sour cream, no turkey bacon, no “chocolate flavored sauce” that doesn’t contain chocolate, no Quorn. If I want something that doesn’t taste like meat or butter, I would rather have the real thing than some chemical concoction pretending to be healthy.”

We beg to differ on some of those items.

Take a Boca Burger versus a McDonald’s Happy Meal burger, for example.

The Happy Meal burger contains these stats:
275 calories
106 fat calories with 11.8 grams of total fat
35 mgs of cholesterol
387 mgs of sodium
30.5 grams of total carbohydrates
12.3 grams of protein
6% of daily calcium
13% of daily iron.

In contrast, the Boca Burger’s numbers are the following:
90 calories
25 fat calories and only 3 grams of total fat.
5 mgs of cholesterol
280 mgs of sodium
320 mgs of potassium
4 grams of total carbohydrates
3 grams of dietary fiber
14 grams of protein
15% of daily calcium
10% of daily iron

Looks like this “faker” Boca Burger pretending to be real is clearly the better option.

Rachael Ray Hosts The Burger Bash

Exciting news in the world of celebrity chefs!

Today, Rachael Ray is featuring a treat containing vegan marshmallows, specifically, the goodies created and distributed by Sweet & Sara.

Sweet & Sara Peanut Butter smores are getting some deliciously sweet press on the Rachael Ray Show website.

Nice Karma balance, after Rachael hosted the Burger Bash with bacon lusting Guy Fieri.

The Peanut Butter Smore is the Sweet and Sara original Smore made with gelatin free marshmallow with a layer of smooth peanut butter on top a graham cracker.

These guys have worked the vegan marshmallow in ways you couldn’t imagine.

They also feature strawberry marshmallows, toasted coconut, and even cinnamon pecan in their product line, all handmade in a dedicated vegan facility.

Sounds like a factory where Willie Wonka gave up the egg and dairy.

The company is headquartered in Long Island City, New York.

We imagine their phones should be ringing off the hook for orders any minute now.

Kosher Vegetarian, starring Natalie Portman and Irrfan Khan, is set for release this Friday, October 16 2009.

In the film, Irrfan plays a strict vegetarian Gujarati man who falls in love with a Jewish girl, played by Natalie Portman.

Portman is a also a vegetarian in real life.

The film is part of a larger anthology, New York, I Love You.

“My character’s dilemma is that the woman who was once my wife, has now become a sanyasin, and he has to worship her,” said Irrfan.

“Actors all over the world are linked by a common craving for excellence. We’re all looking for challenges and glory. But with Natalie, it was very different. We constantly chatted, discussed one another’s culture and shared very warm vibes.”

Alicia Silverstone hosts a launch for her new book THE KIND DIET , NYC

Alicia Silverstone had a launch party for her vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet, which will be released tomorrow from Rodale Publishing.

During the celebration at New York City’s Candle 79, Alicia took the time to explain why cow’s milk wasn’t made from humans.

“Remember, dairy was designed to make little baby calves turn into 400-pound cows, so that’s what it does to you,” Silverstone said. “It makes you fat.”

Well…guess sometimes you have to be blunt.

A study discussed in the Washington Post agrees.

Researchers found that children who drank 3 servings of milk a day were prone to becoming overweight.

Let’s ease up on that mother cow and chug some almond milk instead.

Guy Fieri: Bacon-The Other White Vegetable

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 12th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Barnstable Brown Party Celebrating The 135th Kentucky Derby

Poor Guy Fieri is so repressed from his parents forcing him to eat a vegetarian, macrobiotic diet as a child that now he’s projecting his desires onto all vegetarians.

“I can have bacon on anything,” Fieri said. “I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like bacon unless they’re a vegetarian. And I think even vegetarians, quietly, inside, wish they could.”

Speak for yourself Guy.

Any vegetarian knows they can get their faux pork on with imitation bacon like Lightlife Smart Bacon or Tempeh Bacon from the same company.

What’s worse, he’s trying to insult vegetables by making bacon one of them.

“Could bacon be the other vegetable?” Fieri asked. “The other white vegetable?”

“I like bacon on a stick, I like bacon in the morning. I’ve seen bacon ice cream.”

That’s more than enough bacon to make us turn off The Food Network channel for a month.

Nicole Lapin

Journalist Nicole Lapin, anchor for CNN.com Live, has been a proud vegan for six years and a vegetarian for 13 years.

When asked by green gossip site ecorazzi.com what the most rewarding part of going VEG was, Nicole answered, “vegan cookies.”

Oh, yeah.

There’s no sweeter product on the market than one that spares the lives of dairy cows that will eventually be sent to slaughter or that “gets rid of” baby male chicks that will never lay eggs.

A few favorite vegan cookies on our rewards list including Uncle Eddies, Nana’s (which serves up sweetness for the gluten-free folks), and Alternative Baking Company.

Check them out and request them at your local natural foods store.

Montreal Canadienes hockey player Georges Laraque has recorded his official vegetarian PSA.

Laraque isn’t new to vegetarianism, though, having practiced the diet for awhile before going vegan in June.

He’s also been involved in protests.

“Out on the ice, things get pretty rough. But it’s nothing compared to what animals in factory farming slaughterhouses go through,” Laraque says.

So nice to see more male athletes give the holler to veggies.

Alicia Silverstone Cooks Thingys NYC Food And Wine Festival 2009

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, October 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Authors, Books, Food & Drink.

Alicia Silverstone goes for a morning stroll in NYC

Alicia Silverstone was at the 2009 New York City Food and Wine Festival on Saturday to demonstrate cooking vegan recipes from her vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet, which is set for release by Rodale Publishing on October 13 2009.

Alicia chose to cook a fried seitan pasta dish, Caesar salad, and cheesecake-all made without animal ingredients.

Throughout the demonstration, she referred to items as “thingys” and “yummy” and “yucky.”

Two assistants (who hopefully were “rewarded” with treats afterwards) helped Alicia as she showed the dishes in various moments of preparation and took questions from the audience.

Can’t wait to buy the book and make some of those yummy thingys.
