Josh Dorfman “Lazy Environmentalist” Exaggerates Organic Chocolate Price

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Sundance Institute's 25th Anniversary Party

How much are you willing to pay for those organic chocolate chips?

This was the conversation The Lazy Environmentalist, a show about a man looking to reduce his carbon footprint, star Josh Dorfman had with Tonic.

When the topic turned to how living green can get difficult due to high prices of items or lack of availability, Dorfman used his sweet tooth as an example.

“I look at it like, ‘I love to eat organic food, and sometimes it’s too expensive for me.’ I’m not going to spend $8 per pound on organic dark chocolate chips for making cookies. This was a conversation with my girlfriend last week [after he bought some]. She was like, ‘You are insane!’ But I don’t beat myself up over it, because we as humans — the onus is on business and entrepreneurs to make green choices better for us. If the choices are better we will embrace them. If they’re too expensive or the quality isn’t good enough or they’re hard to find, it’s not realistic for most Americans.”

Actually, the $8 a bag might be a little exaggerated.

The Veg Star found some organic chocolate chips online for roughly $6.

These varieties are usually slightly cheaper, priced at $5 or so in the store.

And heck, it’s almost summer.

Skip the baking altogether and buy a bag of already made cookies made with organic chocolate chips, which are normally $2 cheaper on shelves too.

Loretta Swit “Hot Lips” Houlihan On Animal Radio

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Lint Roller Party Hollywood

Loretta Swit will guest star on the AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio broadcast of Animal Radio on May 8 at Noon EST and then rebroadcast on May 9 at 5PM EST.

The vegetarian actress best known for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on M*A*S*H, is speaking out about the recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down a law that would have made it illegal to market animal crush videos, films depicting animals being…well, crushed.

“These videos are usually sexual in nature and some pervert will buy them to get his gillie out of,” said Swit.

“It’s horrendous the imagination that would conjure up such an evil thing.”

Swit’s own pets live a life far from the animals in the videos, as she has animals with wheelchairs because they’re so old.

And she will talk to fans wearing fur coats about their decisions.

“It’s all about education. If someone comes up to me for an autograph and they’re wearing a fur-coat, before I sign, I will educate. Because sometimes, they simply don’t know 80 animals died for that coat.”

Oscars 2010 - RED CARPET

PETA is rewarding Steve Jobs for Apple’s decision to reject an app that let players club seals, the iSealclub application.

The Apple CEO should be receiving his vegan chocolate seals any day now.

Senior vice president of PETA, Dan Matthews, included a letter to Jobs, along with his chocolate goodies, thanking him, reminding him he shares company with several political leaders around the world that think the annual seal hunt is inappropriate.

From Techcrunch:

“On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, thank you for rejecting the proposed iSealClub iPhone application, which has drawn a great deal of attention to Canada’s annual baby-seal slaughter. You are in good company. Global leaders as diverse as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and the Dalai Lama have taken a stand against the slaughter, and the European Union recently voted to ban seal fur.”

“As a token of our appreciation, we will be sending you some vegan-chocolate seals.”

Feminist Equates Eating Meat With Misogyny At Harvard Speech

Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

Carol J. Adams, author of the book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, spoke on the campus of Harvard University, urging students to go vegetarian, comparing eating meat to misogyny.

The event was sponsored by the Harvard College Vegetarian Society.

Adams said that meat eating is often equated with masculinity and places that celebrate meals of meat also tend to objectify women, such as Hooter’s.

Some criticized Adams for not bringing enough statistics into her speech, such as the effects of meat on human health and the environment.

Adams responded by saying both meat eating and debasing women should be looked at as “experiences” rather than numbers.

“I don’t give a damn about statistics,” Adams said. “I feel that using statistics participates in a rationalized way of thinking about the problem that undercuts my perspective.”

The Harvard Crimson reports most of her aggressive questioners were male.

They probably had just come from their dinner of burgers from the student union.

Celebs Attend Good HouseKeeping Shine On Event

A couple of months ago, Dr. Oz put three Chicago firefighters on a vegan diet.

Mauricio “Mo” Tirado, Egnechles “Iggy” Brown and Doug Crowley have all since lost 20-30 pounds each, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Crowley was able to stop taking cholesterol medication, Brown is excited he can see his abs again and oatmeal is starting to grow on Tirado.

The men plan to stick to their diets as much as possible and say that if they do ever consume meat, it will be in very small amounts.

Dr. Oz enlisted the help of The Engine 2 Diet author Rip Esselstyn, a Texas firefighter who got his team into better shape by convincing them to eat vegan at the firehouse.

“Firehouses are the dumping ground of all of America’s leftovers — you couldn’t create a better atmosphere for unhealthy eating,” Esselstyn said. “It’s such a masculine culture — they think you need to eat dairy, eggs and meat and if you don’t you’re a little sissy girl.”

Emily Deschanel “Good” Interview On Vegetarian Issues

Bones 100 Episodes Celebration in West Hollywood

Emily Deschanel recently interviewed with Good.

The Bones actress has been a vegan since she was a teenager, and is involved with animal activism as well, her better known campaign being promoting the Great Ape Protection Act that would end using chimpanzees in medical laboratories and allow them to retire in sanctuaries.

Here are a few highlights from the interview.

Favorite vegan dessert:
I am obsessed with the peanut butter cups from Alica Silverstone’s new book called The Kind Diet. So tasty! I use raw almond butter.

On convincing people to go vegetarian/vegan:
There is a book called The China Study which discusses the largest nutritional study in history. They set out to determine that animal protein was healthy, but the results were the opposite. Sometimes people need to be grabbed by the health angle. I like to let facts speak for themselves.

On natural remedies versus medication:
If I get a headache the first thing I do is drink some water or coconut water. Hydration is a common cause for headaches. Then I check to see if I have been clenching my jaw. I look for the cause instead of covering the symptoms up with medication. Modern medicine has saved many people’s lives, but I do believe in doing research and looking for alternatives before taking something.
