Myq Kaplan Isn’t “Last Comic Standing” But Gets Last Laugh (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 12th, 2010 in Comedians, Videos.

Myq Kaplan, the lone vegan on “Last Comic Standing” was the first to be told he was finish during finals night.

Kaplan has made a few vegan jokes here and there during his routines and it probably helped him win points from non vegetarians as he often used the matter to make fun of himself.

His response after learning he wasn’t the winner was thanking fans and telling them, “You should have gotten more phones [for voting].”

Here’s Myq doing a routine where he jokes about ordering food and being a vegetarian. If a duckling is a small duck, you want to steer clear of the “dumplings.”

"The Dorm Room Diet" Daphne Oz

We’re giving away a copy of The Dorm Room Diet by Daphne Oz, daughter of the daytime cardio surgeon TV host, Dr. Oz, and a graduate of Princeton University. Daphne found that although she followed a vegetarian diet, she wasn’t always putting the right things in her body and decided to write the book to assist anyone–living in a dorm or a cubicle–in getting on the right eating track.

Daphne’s book is full of tips for living healthy and green and every day of the contest, Vegetarian Star will bring you a tip from the book. To enter to win, simply “give a tip” back, or leave a comment on the post letting us know your tip for staying healthy.

Everyone knows nuts are good for you (full of omega-3 fatty acids, good source of plant based protein), but if you hate the bitter taste of walnuts you don’t have to miss out. Daphne and her family eat them in the traditional Turkish way by soaking them in water overnight. This takes away the bitterness and neutralizes an enzyme inhibitor, which helps your body absorb more vitamins and nutrients.

So that’s the Dorm Room Diet tip of the day. What’s yours?

Meatless Monday Creator Also Invented “Squeeze The Charmin” (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 12th, 2010 in Flexitarian, Food & Drink, Videos.

Sid Lerner is the brain behind the Meatless Monday campaign in the U.S. He was motivated to create the idea after being told by his doctors his cholesterol and blood pressure were over the top. Lerner sees Meatless Monday as a way for everyone to reduce their intake of saturated fat and has worked, through a partnership with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, to extend the program to 80,000 kids in Baltimore’s school districts.

Lerner also Squeezed the Charmin back in the 60s. No, it’s not a reference for any illicit activity, but a catchy slogan for the toilet paper commercials he created. Watch the commercial above and visit NPR for an audio segment Lerner.

Maroon 5 Mickey Madden Says Band Is Vegan Friendly

Mickey Madden

VegNews magazine interviewed Maroon 5‘s bassist Mickey Madden and learned about his journey to veganism as he gradually gave up animals products, starting in high school. These days he finds it easy to keep up what he started as he says all the band members are supportive of his diet, making it easy to eat well on the road. Oh, and that Tweet sent by Adam Levine on aiming to be a vegetarian after the steak indulgence–it probably doesn’t happen too often, as Madden says Levine is 85% vegan.

“We’re all extremely health-conscious and everyone is really vegan-friendly. Adam [Levine], the singer in the band, in particular will eat, I’d say, about 85-percent vegan for health reasons. All the band members are meat-eaters, but they’re not close-minded and [they] understand the principles of veganism. It makes a big difference. It’s so strange, I obviously have reasons that relate to the world at large for my veganism, but it’s so much a personal choice and a matter of personal preference that I’ve never understood the reaction to it that some people have.”

Dating In The Dark is an ABC television reality show modeled after the one originally produced in the Netherlands and was since remade for American, Australian, British, Danish, Finnish, French, and Swedish audiences.

The show gives a whole new meaning to “blind date” as contestants experience their first few dates completely in darkness and are unable to see their potential mates, restricting to touching to, ahem, “assess” one another.

Most recently, Natasha, a swim instructor who’s a vegetarian for ethical reasons tried her hand in love but went home empty.

Most vegetarians looking for love can see an interest before talking to them on the green and vegetarian dating sites we’ve listed before.

Supervegan.com also runs a Date This Vegan feature for vegans in the New York area.
