“People don’t understand what it is to lighten their footprint, what steps to take. So if we give them the simple steps and we tell them exactly how much it affects the environment if they make certain changes—being a vegetarian, doing other things that make a dramatic difference in how much weight they carry in the world—people want to know that. When they realize that by changing simple things they can make a difference, it’s an empowerment vehicle.”

—-Russell Simmons, in an interview with grist.org on the little steps people can take to reduce their carbon footprint. Yes, being a vegetarian is a great way to lighten their footprint. Even if it means cheating every once in awhile.

Russell Simmons Sneaks Fish, Eggs In Vegan Diet

OMG! Vegan Russell Simmons has just admitted to eating fish every once in awhile and not caring about the egg in his noodles.

On a recent interview with msnbc.com, Russell announced a contest he is holding to find America’s Greenest Campus where colleges can compete and measure their carbon footprint before and after making changes.

While discussing being green, Russell mentioned all of the little things people can do to go greener when he mentioned a very, very big thing to reduce our carbon footprint.

“We can be a vegetarian, which is probably the greatest thing we can do. The greatest cause of global warming is the animal abuse. By far more than all the forms of transportation put together.”

Even if this means we stray and eat a little fish every now and then. When the topic turned to celebrity hypocrites, the famed vegan Russell Simmons admitted that even he sometimes slips up.

“I’ve been a vegan for 10 years, but you know sometimes when no one’s looking, I eat fish. I do the best I can. And then [I’ll have some] egg in my egg noodle.”

Whoa! What do you guys think of that. Did Russell just make it easier to people to excuse breaking their vegan vow? Or is he just trying to let people know every little bit counts and you don’t have to be perfect to make a difference?

Russell Simmons To Bossip: I’m Vegan And My Game Is Tight

The Cinema Society Hosts A Screening Of The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh

Gossip blogs can be so cruel.

Bossip.com spied model Julie Henderson and Russell Simmons looking cozy and wrote up a post titled, “Digging For Gold,” implying that Henderson was looking for Simmons to be her sugar daddy.

Simmons wrote back and said:

“I read this morning your headline, “Digging for gold” with a picture of me and Julie Henderson saying that the picture was taken last week at some food event. This “digging for gold” photo was taken last night @ my apt. The event was a fundraiser for the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding…so you’re right we were digging for gold! The honoree was LL Cool J. The organization promotes religious and racial harmony. It is a deep investment of my time, passion and money. Currently, the main focus is Muslim/Jewish relations and we have 52 programs in America where imams speak in synagogues and rabbis speak in mosques We are also spreading this work all over the world. Please send your gold or donations to ffeu.org. Also, as for my “boney, boo” Julie Henderson, she is nobody’s gold digger…she is a quite independent supermodel. FYI. Before yoga and marriage, back in the Krush Groove days, I was fat and high on coke, but I was still known to have the baddest girls from all over the world. Now I’m rich, vegan, sober and in much better shape…Can’t u guys just accept that my game is tight!!!!

Oh, yeah. Don’t hate on the vegan man.

Russell Simmons Defends Rejected PETA Super Bowl Ad

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 in Business.

RIAA And Feeding America Inauguration Charity Ball

The Super Bowl is over, right? Why are we still talking about the PETA ad that was rejected by NBC officials because it had too many naked women screwing broccoli? Cause hip hop mogul Russell Simmons won’t stop talking about it.

He’s announced he’s joining forces with GlobalGrind.com, a hip hop media website where he is the Editor-In-Chief, to help support the “Veggie Love” advertisement by giving it ad space on the site. He wants other media groups to support it too, according to Hip Hop Ruckus.

“When we spread the word that corporate America is feeding us poison, the community will listen. We march like an army. That is why I jumped at the chance to air the banned Super Bowl ad that PETA just released. Being a vegan for the past nine years, people tell me all the time that I look ten years younger now than I did before changing my food choices and I’m not contributing to the suffering and slaughter of nine billion animals. Even though it isn’t often discussed, a little known fact is that factory farming is the number one cause of global warming, worse than all forms of transportation or any other contributor. I don’t know how else to say it but the plain fact is, people in our community are dying everyday from making unhealthy eating choices.”

“This is why I am challenging other media outlets to join Global Grind by broadcasting this PETA ad worldwide and dwarf the exposure it would have generated had it aired during the Super Bowl. Global Grind is donating media space that will give the ad at least 50 million impressions and this is just the beginning. This is just one gift that Global Grind is giving to the hip-hop community, the human family and the planet.”

In addition to airing the video, celebrities who blog at Global Grind will post their thoughts on it.

Masta Killa Ain’t A Killa Of Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 2nd, 2009 in Male Singers, Videos.

Find out more about Masta Killa at peta2.com.

Is hip hop becoming vegetarianized?

Russell Simmons has always been open about his vegan lifestyle he’s practiced for almost a decade.

Recently, half of hip hop duo Capone-N-Noreaga, N.O.R.E., documented his successful weight loss by following a vegan diet and even changed the name of his blogs to reflect his diet switch.

Now, Masta Killa of Wu Tang Clan has recorded his PSA for vegetarianism. Good to know he’s not recording a PSA for the veggie burger on waffles his band mate RZA created.

Masta’s been vegetarian for 13 years, ever since he decided to forgo the turkey at Thanksgiving.

Perhaps what’s even more exciting is that he’s normally the group member who doesn’t give many interviews!

It’s great to see African-Americans speak up about vegetarianism and hopefully, they can influence other minorities to adopt the lifestyle known to reduce their chances of developing diabetes and high blood pressure, illnesses known to disproportionately affect those communities.

If Masta Killa doesn’t convince you to go veg, his adorable son, Eternal sure will.

Russell Simmons Says Vegan In New Orleans Is Difficult

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 in Authors, Business, Food & Drink.

Around Park City - 2009 Sundance Film Festival Day 1

New Orleans is alive and kicking and according to the New York Post, “the place for upscale travelers to visit this winter.”

The Big Easy certainly provides warmer weather than what many of us are experiencing now and the variety of food and culture rich spots such as the French Quarter, make celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Martha Stewart, and Brad Pitt all repeat fans.

Like any traveling adventure, a visit to New Orleans for vegetarians and vegans requires planning in terms of where to eat, and hip hop mogul Russell Simmons admits to the temptation of all the non vegan goodies.

“It’s the most difficult place to be vegan in the world,” he said. “I have found a lot of vegan food and vegan jambalaya, but the other food is so attractive!”

Not to fear, as online guides such as VegGuide.org, give you the rundown on every veg and veg friendly restaurant in New Orleans or anywhere else.

Russell Simmons: Spirituality Drives Diet And Business

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 in Authors, Business.

2nd Annual Sunflower Children Texas Hold'em

Every morning Russell Simmons lights a candle and sits still for 30 minutes as part of his daily meditation routine. That’s only a dream for those of us who don’t know the meaning of “time out.” Luckily, for him, he’s learned that spiritual business is equally important as the financial.

His spiritual practices are what led him to the vegan diet and lifestyle he’s maintained for almost a decade.

“My motivation for eliminating animal products from my diet was [the Hindu and Buddhist practice] ahimsa, or non-violence,” he told Tracey Pepper, free-lance writer for Vegetarian Times. “If you really want to live a happy life, cut the animal products from your diet.” Simmons is featured in the January 2009 issue of the magazine.

As the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, the parent recording company to famous hip-hop acts such as Nas and LL Cool J for you old school folks, creator of his own clothing line, Phat Farm, and the author of a best selling motivational book, Do You! 12 Laws To Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success, he’s certainly reaped large financial rewards, even if he hasn’t been doing it all for the money.

“I never chase money. I used to think that money was part of the reward, but they can’t pay you enough to make you feel good about something you don’t really enjoy. I’ve found that the more I enjoy giving something that’s lasting and promoting happiness, the more lasting happiness I have. It’s always evolving and there’s always going to be some amount of suffering, but I’ve found my business through giving what I think it good.”

Read the rest of Russell’s interview with Vegetarian Times in the January ’09 issue on the stands now to learn what direction he’d like to see hip-hop take in the future.
