Can Nicole Lapin Be A Honey Eating Vegan?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Journalists.

Target Presents Variety's Power Of Youth Event - Inside

Veganism is supposed to include diet and lifestyle, so presumably, a vegan who wore leather really isn’t “vegan” according to some strict standards.

Journalist Nicole Lapin, who calls herself a vegan, recently said she does eat honey.

Is Nicole really not a vegan for eating honey?

According to a definition of veganism from vegetus.org:

“Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals (Stepaniak).”

Although honey is not a product extracted from the bee itself, bees do produce it for their own food.

And beemakers force bees to make excess amounts of honey, so they’ll have food left after the honey is harvested.

Is this exploitation?

When bees aren’t producing enough, beekeepers give them supplements, usually mixed with sugar and water.

Blah! That’s like replacing the gourmet almond spread with generic brand peanut butter!

But most vegans who don’t consume any other animal derived or made product except honey don’t want to call themselves just vegetarian.

And those occasional fish eaters will stand by their vegetarianism.

Is it time to create sub definitions for vegan and vegetarian?

Andrew G All Funked Out From Funky Pies Vegan Deliciousness

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Business, Celebrity Tweets, Restaurants, TV Hosts.

Leona Lewis Media Call

Andrew G. had the chance to Tweet about a vegan pie just before the carbs took their toll.

“Vegan pie Floater from Funky Pies in Bondi, nap soon. Coz that’s how I roll, huge serve of carbs then straight to sleep…”

Funky Pies is a great place to catch some vegan food in an Australian eatery that’s eco-conscious in every aspect of its business.

Besides serving great vegan food like “Brekkie’ Rolls” of Veg-sausage mix, beans, tomato, ‘bacon’ bits and “Funky Chunky” and “No Wurry Curry,” Funky Pies using biodegradable packing in all their take out products, serves fair trade coffee, and boasts its staff uniforms are made in sweatshop free factories.

Angie Stephenson, the self titled “Director of Funk” says on the website about Funky Pies’ specialization:

“That’s an easy one, who doesn’t love a good pie? You don’t have to be Aussie to enjoy a nice hot tasty pie with deliciously flaky pastry. You can get dodgy pies though, so I wanted to provide a product that was not only quick to cook and easy to eat, but a healthy alternative to the more common ‘meat’ pie where you are really not sure what part of an animal you are eating…mmm.”

We hear you, Angie. Mystery meat is totally different kind of funky.

Emily Deschanel & Stars Answer How They Get Their Protein

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

(500) Days of Summer Los Angeles Premiere

Victoria Moran recently sat down with some veg food loving eco chicks to discuss all things protein.

The ladies, Emily Deschanel, Marilu Henner, Mariel Hemingway, and Chloe Jo Berman, named a few of their favorite concentrated sources of protein.

Here is a list the gals drafted.

* leafy greens
* beans, especially in chili
* hemp seeds
* seitan
* tempeh
* hummus
* quinoa

We’re thinking you could jot these down and make the list your “cheat sheet” in case you can’t decide what to eat for your next meal.

For you professional vegs who reach into the cabinet and pull a super protein meal or snack together without realizing it, maybe there’s something on here you’ve forgotten about.

Regardless of where you stand in vegetarian knowledge, this list could always come in handy when you get the ever so annoying question from your Big Mac lovin’ cousins of, “How do you get your protein?

“Bored To Death” With Jason Schwartzman: Episode 2 Preview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 21st, 2009 in Actors, Film & TV, Videos.

Bored To Death premiered last night on HBO starring vegan Jason Schwartzman, who plays a pot smoking, drinking guy who ruminates too much about the sad parts of his life.

Schwartzman co-wrote Bored To Death, which is probably why there are so many vegan references in the television series.

Schwartzman’s character, Jonathan Ames, calls himself a non-practicing vegan and hooks up with a “radical vegan” helicopter mom (Parker Posey) in one episode, who sends him on a mission to recover her son’s skateboard from a group of bad street kids.

Here’s a clip from episode 2 of Bored To Death above.
