“The Daily Show” Camel Incident Caught On Tape (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on February 24th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Videos.

Some of Jon Stewart‘s fans are not laughing after seeing a video posted on YouTube of a camel being handled in icy, cold conditions outside the studio. The animal was scheduled to make an appearance for a skit on the show.

The clip shows the camel being stuck between metal bars, slipping and falling on the icy ground and being yanked aggressively by the handler.

Protesters have been swarming the capital of Madison, Wisconsin to protest changes to the state’s budget. Some have compared the protests to the uprising in Egypt. The Daily Show thought it would be funny to prove Wisconsin is nothing like Egypt, using the camel as a prop.

As expected, not many are seeing the humor.

Robin Quivers

Robin Quivers took a break from filming her web-based cooking show, Vegucating Robin, to blog at the Huffington Post on Oprah‘s most recent vegan stint.

Quivers’ post highlights how the several hundred Harpo staffers that went vegan with Oprah may have alleviated some of the most common medical problems caused by diets, if only for the short duration they stuck to the diet. She reminds readers that even the United States government is now telling people eating a more plant-based diet may go a long way to maintaining good health.

It’s not known how many of Oprah’s staffers continued the diet after the challenge was met. But Quivers hopes many at home who watched the episode will continue the course, seeing how taking control of one’s own health through the food he or she eats may do more than any discovery in the medical or biotech lab.

Anthony Bourdain "Medium Raw"

Anthony Bourdain may never be president of the Vegan of the Month Club, but in recent years, the chef and author who said vegans are a “persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn,” has stood up for some of the very same animal cruelty and sustainable food principles vegetarians have.

Treehugger highlighted this during a review of Bourdain’s book, Medium Rare, where he says he and PETA are alike in that he doesn’t want animals to suffer and that people should be eating less meat.

“I invest in things that I have faith in. For example, building a financial company (UniRush Financial Services) that serves people who were thrown away by the banks which developed a technology that speaks to the middle class. It has to be an idea that is aligned to the principles I live by. I don’t have any products that I don’t believe in. I won’t take part in the suffering of animals, exploitation of people or abuse of the planet. I can’t say that I’m a vegan and then own a steakhouse. It’s a karmic thing–you get what you give. It’s kind of nice when you’re serving the planet. I can go to sleep.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on February 21st, 2011 in Animal Issues.

Jane Goodall and Mr. H

Can zoos effectively keep animals healthy and thriving as if they were living in their natural habitats? Do the benefits of education outweigh the consequences of removing them from the wild?

Animal advocates and experts constantly debate this, and Jane Goodall recently shared her thoughts on chimpanzees living in confined conditions.

The wild is by far the most natural way of living for a chimp, but according to Goodall, it may not be the protected sanctuary activists are so willing to label it.
