“The Closer” Tony Denison Gave Into Parmesan Cheese

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 in Actors, Food & Drink, Recipes.

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

The only animal Tony Denison from TNT‘s The Closer eats is fish, but he used to be a vegan before succumbing to cheese.

“I like Parmesan cheese too much,” Denison told Mother Nature Network.

Of all the cheeses to have a culinary affection for, Parmesan may be one of the worst.

As a hard cheese, manufacturers often use an animal based enzyme obtained from a calf’s stomach called rennet, while some soft cheeses may be used with a vegetable based one.

But if Parmesan is your thing, you’re not out of luck.

Several vegan recipes exists, most of which use either 1/2 cup of almonds or walnuts, 1 cup of nutritional yeast and a pinch of optional salt, blended in a food processor or blender.

Try it out on pasta, popcorn or bread and you’ll be one less excuse away from keeping your vegan vow.

Subway Restaurants To Phase In Cage-Free Eggs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 in Business, Restaurants.

New York Council Member Proposes Restrictions On Fast Food Restaurants

Subway restaurants in the U.S. will begin phasing in cage-free eggs, a practice already adopted by its UK franchises.

As part of its new animal welfare policy, Subway will first ensure that 4% of the eggs used in its breakfast menus are sourced from cage-free suppliers, with the goal of eventually having 100% of eggs obtained from hens that are not confined in battery cages.

“Subway’s new animal welfare policy will help improve conditions for animals within its supply chain and throughout the nation,” stated Matthew Prescott, corporate outreach director for The Humane Society of the United States’ factory farming campaign. “The Humane Society of the United States applauds Subway for beginning to phase out its use of eggs from hens confined in cages.

Subway has also taken steps to use meat obtained from more humane methods, and more than 5% of its turkey comes from suppliers that used controlled atmosphere killing, a process said to reduce suffering of slaughtered birds.

Subway is part of a group of fast food franchises pledging to make similar changes related to animal welfare, including Denny’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and IHOP.

Moby No Longer Self Righteous About Vegan Lifestyle

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

'The Runaways' New York Premiere

Moby is a reformed vegan.

Although in the past, he sometimes refused to speak to non vegans, he confessed at the Genesis Awards that he used to have a holier than thou attitude towards the non vegans until he realized that being a jerk didn’t do much for converting or saving any creature other than his ego.

During an interview with Grant Butler of the Oregonian, the musician said, “There are a lot of people in the animal rights movement who can be very passionate and aggressive, and I applaud people’s passion, but when people are judgmental and aggressive, all you end up doing is getting other people to turn away in irritation. To change people’s minds, you have to respect the people you’re talking to. Part of that is presenting the facts available, and not being pedantic or judgmental.”

So expect to see a passionate, but respectful character if you catch him on his Gristle book tour.

And if you accidentally wear your old pair of leather shoes you bought before you changed, rest assured you won’t be crucified.

Octomom Nadya Suleman Lets PETA Put Spay/Neuter Sign In Yard

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 25th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

Octomom Nadya Suleman and her entourage of nannies caravan the octuplets and the twins to a park in Los Angeles

The Octomom has just bought 15 more minutes of fame.

Nadya Suleman signed a deal with animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to promote spaying and neutering pets to control the animal population.

It’s pretty easy to figure out why Suleman was chosen as the “it” girl for the campaign.

Suleman has agreed to put a sign in her front yard that reads, “Don’t Let Your Dog or Cat Become an Octomom. Always Spay or Neuter.”

In exchange, PETA is paying Suleman $5,000 and a month’s worth of veggie burgers and hot dogs.

A month’s worth of veggie burgers? Hey, hey, hey, there’s space in our yard too, PETA.

Suleman accepted the offer through her lawyer, Jeff Czech, who is also in the process of refinancing a whopping $450,000 payment due on her home two weeks ago.

Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2010 - Los Angeles

Katy Perry has a very healthful habit of consuming mushrooms (presumably the non hallucinogenic ones).

“I love mushrooms,” she said. “I could eat a ton of them. I really love truffles but I hardly ever get them. Mushrooms in general though are so healthy and good for you. I can’t get enough.”

Perhaps Perry could stuff more shrooms down her throat and less of her other favorite foods, which are filled with animal fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and more.

“My fave things include barbeque chicken chop at CPK Chinese, chicken salad at Chinchins, Rock shrimp and yellow tail sashimi at Nobu, Crispy beef at Mr.Chow’s, four curry chicken salad at Urth Cafe, my beloved double double at In-N-Out Burger. All so good!”

Oh, my.

Perry is engaged to vegetarian Russell Brand, who hopefully will exercise his powers of being the man of the house and say “No, no, no!” to Perry’s chicken a day and double double vice.

Hmm…was that sexist?

At any rate, kudos to Perry for liking mushrooms, a plant that has been indicated in boosting immunity.

“Studies show that mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection,” said Douglas Schar, DipPhyt, MCPP, MNIMH, director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine in Washington, DC.

So do what Schar said and load up on shiitake, portabello, cremini and even white button.
