Ben Lee Marrying Ione Skye

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 31st, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Ben Lee Plays Max Sessions Concert

Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee will marry his sweetheart, Ione Skye in a traditional Hindu ceremony. They will be joined as man and wife by guru Sakthi Narayani Amma, who has apparently served as guidance to Ben for several years.

You might be asking, “Who the heck is Ben Lee?” Such was the question we asked, so we did a little investigation. It’s always fun to learn about celebrities who might not be as well known or more famous in other countries.

You may have heard his song, “Catch My Disease,” on Grey’s Anatomy and television commercials for Dell Computers.

Like many handsome meatless men, he has been nominated as one of PETA’s World’s Sexiest vegetarians. He started his musical career with a band called Noise Addict, but went solo after that band broke up. Past romances include actress Claire Danes. His CD, Ripe, released in 2007, features a guest appearance by veg rocker Benji Madden of Good Charlotte.

Second VegiTerranean For Chrissie Hynde

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 31st, 2008 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Farm Sanctuary Gala 2004

Chrissie Hynde is looking to expand her restaurant business and open a second VegiTerranean in Columbus, OH. In 2007, she opened the first in her hometown of Akron.

Although nothing is definite yet, calls to the restaurant confirm a working plan to expand.

Earlier this month, The VegiTerranean put 2 of its vegan burgers on display at the National Hamburger Festival.

The original plan was to open the Columbus restaurant by this summer, but we all know good things take time.

Hynde’s partner Dan Duplain told the Columbus Dispatch they eventually want to have restaurants in every major city in Ohio. The current vegan menu features vegan Italian food and items named for famous Ohio residents such alcohol-free cocktails named after the Alcoholics Anonymous founder Dr. Bob Smith.

The Pretender’s singer grew up in Ohio and attended Kent State University for awhile. She now resides in the U.K.

Benjamin Zephaniah, What’s In Your Shopping Cart?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 in Authors, Food & Drink.

At Vegetarian Star, we like to bring you both oldies and goodies-meaning if an article is still relevant, we’ll tell you about it.

Dr. John Briffa examines  celebrities’ food choices and gives the health yah or nay. We found him examing Benjamin Zephaniah-poet, writer of many books including Talking Turkeys and Rasta Time in Palestine, vegan, and animal rights activist.

Zephaniah:
I ‘ve been vegan since I was 13, when I realised I could live happily without taking from the animal world. I don’t like to preach about it but I see myself as an example. I’ve got some Nigerian friends who claim that eating meat enables them to make love to a woman better, and one friend who’s so fat he can hardly move from the chair, and still thinks he’s being African by eating meat.

“I believe in having something raw with each meal, and because Caribbean men are prone to prostate cancer, I usually have tomatoes as they are meant to contain properties that help to prevent it.”

Dr. Briffa:
Garlic
Garlic has various beneficial effects on the body that are believed to afford relative protection from several conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, deep vein thrombosis and infections such as colds and flu. It seems garlic has the capacity to keep not just potential suitors, but also a range of unwanted ills, at arm’s length.

Soya milk
Soya milk is free from the sugar found in dairy-derived milk known as lactose. This has particular relevance for Benjamin because individuals of Afro-Caribbean stock tend not to digest lactose at all well, and this can give rise to various symptoms of digestive disorder including bloating, diarrhoea and gas. The fact the soya milk contains hormone-like substances known as phytoestrogens that are believed to help protect against heart disease and prostate cancer is another boon for Benjamin.

Plantain
Plantains are believed to help thicken the lining of the stomach and protect from ulcers. They are also rich in selenium – a trace mineral that is believed to help protect against a variety of cancers including prostate cancer.

Is Andre 3000 A Cheapskate?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

MTV TRL Presents Andre Benjamin And John Legend

Yes Andre 3000 has many faces, but apparently the generous and appreciative restaurant patron isn’t one of them.

One of Peta’s Sexiest visited a restaurant in Atlanta that wasn’t exactly vegan friendly. After the waiter, who identified himself as Matt Moore, was finally able to find a dish that suited the veggie king, he claims Andre showed his gratitude (or shall we say lack of) by leaving no tip.

A photgraph of the receipt looks like Andre was guilty of cheapness.

Moore responded by saying:

“The chef had tried to please them with original dishes and took time out of the busy dinner to customize a meal for them.”

“Despite the spot-on service and super-catered food, they felt the need to leave me no money. I had nothing to do with the food, yet he stiffed me.”

Moore auctioned off the receipt on eBay for $14.50.

Most of us vegetarians have had problems here and there when dining in a restaurant that was made for carnivores, but absolutely no tip?! If the staff made an honest effort, it seems only fitting to at least give them credit, right? Unless they bring out beef wellington 4 times…What do you think? Is this half of Outkast a cheapskate?

Heather Mills Eats At Chicago’s Hub 51. Will Food Line Hub Be In Windy City?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 in Models.

Heather Mills Poses For Cameras At Speakers Corner For 'VIVA' Charity

Heather Mills has been spotted sampling vegan delights at Chicago’s Hub 51.

Earlier, we brought you the news of her troubles finding a home due to her demanding and restrictive nature.

According to The Chicago Sun Times, she might mimic her ex husband’s late wife and start her own line of vegetarian food and is looking to possibly pitch her tent in the windy city if the production takes place there.

Given the fact that she is very adamant about environmental and rights issues, it will be interesting to see what specifications will be called for if a food plant does open such as energy use and workers’ treatment.

Veg Howard Defends Veg Bale

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 in Actors, Actresses.

Premiere Of

Is hummus thicker than water? Vegetarian Bryce Dallas Howard recently defended Christian Bale, who is also veg, on recent allegations that he created a hostile environment on The Terminator by throwing temper tantrums on the set. Bale has been making headlines lately for an alleged assault on his mother and sister.

Howard, who played Bale’s wife, insisted he was nothing but a gentleman and suggested the role he played may have caused him to be misunderstood.

“This man is just a gentleman, an amazing person. I adore him and I just can’t wait to be with him next week,” said Howard.

“(His character) John Connor is a very intense character… and so misinterpretations could happen.”

Both Howard and Bale are vegetarians. Howard was introduced to veganism by Joaquin Phoenix, her co-star on The Village. Phoenix apparently showed her a documentary on animal cruelty called Earthlings. Howard reported in 2006 that she switched to vegetarian in order to help her boost her amino acid levels in preparation for pregnancy.

Adjectives To Describe Emmylou Harris: Cheese, Not Bacon Please

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 in Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Although country music legend Emmylou Harris just released a new album in June, she’s no stranger to the music industry and has been praised by the media-even when the praises weren’t exactly the type she was looking for.

Washington Post music critic Josh Freedom duLac once said: “Emmylou Harris is like bacon. She makes everything better.”

“Well, I don’t know if I like that,” she told Straight.com, “because I’m a vegetarian.”

“How about cheese?” she suggested.  “Let’s say cheese.”

The 61 year old Nashville, TN resident lives with her mother and also runs a dog shelter.

Her latest album, All I Intended To Be, features collaborations with Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle.

“It encompasses all the different hats I’ve worn—songwriting, doing covers, working with so many great people,” she said. “In a sense, it was a return to a sound that’s been with me throughout my career.”

Moby: Boca Burger And Tofurky Are Gateway Drugs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, July 28th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Gothamist

If you haven’t picked up the latest (July/August 2008) issue of Vegetarian Times yet, you’re missing out. (Or if you still have the mag in your “inbox” pile of mail you haven’t read yet.)

Moby’s got an interview featured in the Q & A Section where he talks about his mommy helping him go veg (How sweet.)

Moby is the former co-owner of Teany, a vegetarian restaurant and tea shop in New York and talked about his love of the eatery.

“What I was most proud of about Teany was that on any given Saturday we would be filled with people and a very small percentage of them were vegetarian. So if you went to Teany and you were a vegetarian or vegan, you would be perfectly happy. But if you went to Teany and you were a meat eater, you would also be happy.  Regardless of what some people’s feelings might be about fake meat, it is a really good way of getting meat eaters into vegetarianism. It’s a gateway drug.”
