Paul McCartney

It’s been awhile since Paul McCartney had beef on a bun, so it’s only fit that the McDonald’s in his home town of Liverpool finally take those pictures of him and other Beatles off the wall.

The story made headlines a couple of years ago, when it was reported the singer was upset that over a dozen shots of the 60s iconic rock group were plastered over the Sefton Street fast food restaurant.

“Let’s Cook” White House Video Puts Tofu Chili On America’s Menu

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Videos.

A series of cooking videos titled Let’s Cook has been added to the White House’s program, “Let’s Move,” designed to get Americans healthier.

The first of the Let’s Cook videos feature White House chef Sam Kass and Chef Marvin showing you how to stretch food over days, such as making your own stock from leftover vegetable scraps, while incorporating healthier proteins like pastas, beans and tofu.

Yes, you heard it right. Tofu chili is on the menu, with Chef Marvin raving about how marvelous it is around minute 2:45, with the “Cooking With Tofu,” tip.

“You want something affordable and a good substitute for meat and can also put the protein on the table–tofu’s the answer.”

Watch to hear Chef Marvin give his tips for cooking the soybean.

Victoria Moran Beef With Locavores

Victoria Moran

Victoria Moran recently wrote a column in the Huffington Post on how vegetarians, vegans and those championing the local food movement seem to be moving in different directions.

Sure, all groups enjoy the thought of locally grown food and supporting small farms. But too many of the big wigs of the local  movement, like Alice Waters or Michael Pollan, aren’t budging when it comes to going vegetarian. Not that she’s pointing the condescending finger at flexitarians, either.

“I’d go to the farmers’ market at Union Square–it’s every bit as gorgeous as anybody’s Eiffel Tower or Grand Canyon–and if the farmer selling goat cheese also had glorious spring greens, I’d buy her greens. It was totally friendly. I never said, “Shame on you for stealing the milk God meant for goat babies!” and she never said, “Damn you, veg-head: buy some cheese or you don’t deserve arugula!” And the couple that provide the provisions for my CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture: you buy a share in a small farm for a season) always knew that I wouldn’t be getting eggs. I didn’t ask for anything to make up for that, but they often put in some extra potatoes or apples or a bottle of herb-flavored vinegar. It was nice. We were allies.”

Dirt Candy’s Amanda Cohen Wins Best Faux Foie Gras

Amanda Cohen of Dirt Candy

Amanda Cohen, chef and owner of  vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy in New York city, has received PETA’s prize of $10,000 for creating the best tasting vegetarian dish to taste like real foie gras.

Cohen beat out 37 other chefs for the top prize for a substitute where geese aren’t painfully force fed through tubes until their livers swell several times the normal size.

Cohen’s vegan version of foie gras is a mushroom mousse, made with portobellos, soy milk, vegan margarine, and onions, and has been on Dirty Candy’s menu for awhile.

It’s a safe bet humans will voluntarily stuff themselves with this appetizer until their bellies expand in size.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

The Terminator is helping to terminate hen cruelty in California.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has just signed a law that will require all whole (shell) eggs sold in California to come from hens that were able to, “stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs without touching one another or the sides of an enclosure,” according to the Humane Society blog.

That means California will essentially be a cage-free state.
