"The Food Matters Cookbook" Mark Bittman

"The Food Matters Cookbook" Mark Bittman

Mark Bittman‘s latest book, The Food Matters Cookbook, is filled with recipes designed for the flexitarian or those looking to consume less meat. Bittman gave an interview to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette where the topic of a study indicating Americans aren’t getting enough fruits and vegetables came up.

Bittman insists that most people would reduce meat intake if they had the resources, whether that’d be through enticing recipes, food stores or money, but questioned the reality that everyone could become vegetarian or vegan.

“Just about every study and survey show that people want to eat more fruits and vegetables and are aware of the benefits of eating less meat. They just don’t know how to do it,” Bittman said.

“A conservative estimate is that 80 percent of what we eat should come from unprocessed plants, which is such a big turnaround that we won’t be able to achieve it in our lifetimes. To say everyone needs to be a vegan is a nice idea, but that’s kind of like saying everyone should ride a bicycle. It’s simply not going to happen. The challenge then is, how do we move in that direction of eating less of A and more of B?”

PETA 30th Anniversary Gala

PETA 30th Anniversary Gala

People love and hate People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in equal numbers, but no one can argue the organization doesn’t get noticed and get its message out. This weekend on September 25th, the group will celebrate its 30th anniversary at a sold out gala in Hollywood where celebrities who have worked with the animal rights group like Dave Navarro, Glee’s Lea Michele and Bob Barker will be honored. The event will be streamed live on the Internet.

What exactly has PETA done in the past three decades besides strip people to promote vegetarianism? You’d be pleasantly surprised if you don’t track the group’s record, which is outlined in a document titled “30 Reasons to Celebrate PETA’s 30th Anniversary.”

  • The first ever felony animal cruelty conviction was obtained against factory farm workers after undercover investigations at a North Carolina pig-breeding farm found workers beating pregnant sows with metal rods and sawing off a conscious animal’s legs.
  • The group’s exposure of the exotic skin trade of snakes and alligators prompted several large companies, Nike, Cole Haan, Victoria’s Secret, H&M, and Overstock.com, to stop selling these products.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, September 24th, 2010 in Actors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Don’t let the baby face fool you. Jesse Eisenberg would have thrown a few punches in the name of vegetarianism if some paranoid, unsocial suspecting vegetarian would’ve kept up his attitude about being asked questions about the meatless lifestyle.

The actor who plays Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network said he almost got into a fight with someone on the subway just because the guy said vegetariansim was a personal question.

“I got in a fight with somebody on the subway once because I asked if they were a vegetarian, and he said that was too personal, and I got angry,” Eisenberg told Popeater.

“I’d heard from some followers on Twitter that most gels were vegan and vegetarian-friendly. A friend had given me a brand to try, but how was I going to carry it? I already tote a big bottle of water around, so I couldn’t hold the gel at the same time. I decided to wear a belt with a pouch that I picked up once in the travel section of a drug store. It wasn’t perfect, but it should work.”

Several energy gels or shots exist for the vegetarian and vegan athlete, as well as recipes to make them from scratch. Gels are designed to replace carbohydrates and electrolytes during physical activity.

Restaurant aren’t always on target when naming dishes after celebrities. Some can’t spell Carrie Underwood’s name correctly or remember that she doesn’t eat meat. Something tells us Natalie Portman wouldn’t eat her own lobster salad at a New York eatery. But finally, a family owned restaurant in the midwest has gotten it right with the Vegetarian Pamela Anderson sandwich.

Tortas Guicho Dominguez y el Cubanito in Indianapolis, Indiana (that’s quite a mouthful to blurt out where to eat when you’re hungry) has a sandwich on the menu fit for the sex symbol actress to consume, containing green bell peppers, mozzarella, and mushrooms.
