Anthony Bourdain "Medium Raw"

Anthony Bourdain may never be president of the Vegan of the Month Club, but in recent years, the chef and author who said vegans are a “persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn,” has stood up for some of the very same animal cruelty and sustainable food principles vegetarians have.

Treehugger highlighted this during a review of Bourdain’s book, Medium Rare, where he says he and PETA are alike in that he doesn’t want animals to suffer and that people should be eating less meat.

Meatless Mouthful–Russell Simmons On Green Business

Russell Simmons

“I invest in things that I have faith in. For example, building a financial company (UniRush Financial Services) that serves people who were thrown away by the banks which developed a technology that speaks to the middle class. It has to be an idea that is aligned to the principles I live by. I don’t have any products that I don’t believe in. I won’t take part in the suffering of animals, exploitation of people or abuse of the planet. I can’t say that I’m a vegan and then own a steakhouse. It’s a karmic thing–you get what you give. It’s kind of nice when you’re serving the planet. I can go to sleep.”

Animal advocates and experts constantly debate this, and Jane Goodall recently shared her thoughts on chimpanzees living in confined conditions.

The wild is by far the most natural way of living for a chimp, but according to Goodall, it may not be the protected sanctuary activists are so willing to label it.

When Mother Nature Network asked her to share her tip for going green, Leifer replied:

“Did you know that by going vegan you are so much more ecological and green than anything else? You make so much more of a statement with your fork than what you drive. So go vegan, people. Do it for the environment. And do it for your health, too.”

Don’t believe that eating nuts, legumes and grains damages the planet less than consuming steak and burgers? Calculate the cost of your next meal using the Food Emissions Calculator.
