Quantcast Vegetarian Starvegan shoes (2)

Jane Velez-Mitchell

As an anchor of the popular HLN show Issues, Jane Velez-Mitchell is required to maintain style.

Good thing no one ever sees her feet while she’s on television.

Jane’s interview with Media Bistro reveals she once left the house with two different kinds of shoes on.

But at least they were animal-free.

“No matter how many stupid things I say here, I know I’m a winner because at the end of the day I haven’t killed anything to get through this day,” Jane says.

Natalie Portman Makes Christian Dior Give Her Non-Leather Shoes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 10th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Natalie Portman

You know you’ve got power when a major fashion label asks you to represent them, then remakes its fashion animal-friendly just so you can wear them.

That’s what Natalie Portman told WWD Chrisitan Dior has done with all its leather shoes it wants her to model.

“One of the things that’s been so nice is that Dior made all of the shoes for me with no animals and no leather or anything, because I don’t wear any leather…They re-made all my shoes so I can wear Dior shoes without taking lives.”

Leather just isn’t an animal issue, it’s also an environmental one. A 2009 Greenpeace report revealed several top shoe brands like Nike, Adidas and Reebok and their demands for leather may have played a role in the supporting cattle ranchers that were illegally slaughtering in the Amazon and contributing to the deforestation there.

2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

When Natalie Portman decided to launch her line of vegan shoes with Te Casan, she collaborated with Via Spiga creative director Paola Venturi.

Venturi had nothing but good words to say about Portman in an interview with Orange County Local News.

“She contacted me at the Te Casan company because she wanted to design a vegan shoe line. She fell in love with the brand and we started to work together on a small collection. She’s fabulous because she has a vision about fashion. She was really directional so it was easy to interpret.”

Unfortunately, some good things do come to an end, and Portman’s shoe line received the boot in 2008 bad economy.

Doc Martens celebrates its 50th year in manufacturing the famous 14 and 18 holed shoes this month.

The company started out very eco-friendly, as Dr Klaus Märtens and Dr Herbert Funck constructed the first pair from recycled discarded rubber from former Luftwaffe airfields.

Years later the company began making vegan versions of Docs, but the production of those shoes were halted when it relocated factories to Asia.

Relax.

There are other vegan shoes in the sea.

Kristen Bell Celebrates “One Day Without Shoes” (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 8th, 2010 in Actresses, Fashion, Videos.

Today is TOMS Shoes annual “Day Without Shoes” and you should celebrate by doing without.

Unless of course, you’re sitting in an office with cubicles–for the sake of your co-workers, keep your feet covered until you’re home.

Vegetarian Kristen Bell is the public face of the campaign this year, as can be seen in the video promo for the event above.

For those living in poverty, going shoeless isn’t an option, and neither are the consequences to not having proper protection.

From OneDayWithoutShoes:

  • In some developing nations, children must walk for miles to school, clean water and to seek medical help.
  • Cuts and sores on feet can lead to serious infection.
  • Often, children cannot attend school barefoot.
  • In Ethiopia, approximately one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil.
  • Podoconiosis is 100% preventable with basic foot hygiene and wearing shoes.

After you’ve walked another’s path without shoes, buy your next pair from TOMS, a company with several vegan friendly options that donates a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold.
