“I became vegetarian for three major reasons. I was tired of giving money to businesses and organizations that practice animal cruelty, pollute the environment, and clear cut forest for cattle fields.”

—-Rise Against drummer Brandon Barnes, in an interview, when asked why he became vegetarian.

Live Earth Media Conference

Vegan singer and musician Missy Higgins wants to treat her environmentally aware fans by rewarding them with a special unreleased version of her song, “Where I stood” from the album On a Clear Night.

If you pledge to reduce your carbon footprint by 2% in 2009, you can download the unreleased song for free.

Not to leave folks in a boat without a paddle, Missy has included 10 Ways To Decrease Your Carbon Output on her Warner Brothers Website, like buying local and organic, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and walking more just to name a few.

Kinda disappointing that Missy left off one of the biggest ways to have smaller carbon feet-by going vegetarian!

The idea of the pledge is taken from the Sierra Club’s 2% Solution, which theorizes that if we reduce our carbon emissions by 2% every year, by 2050, we can curb global warming and its consequences.

Jason Mraz Checking Bags Of Powder At Airports

Written by Vegetarian Star on January 23rd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Stand Up 2 Cancer - Los Angeles, CA

If you frequently travel by plane, you know the rules of what you can and can’t fly the friendly skies with is pretty strict. So you have to wonder how Jason Mraz gets his bundle of powders and knives through security without a eyelash being batted.

These powders and knives are for preparing delicious raw food dishes, by the way.

Tracey Pepper, writer for the Vegetarian Times, asked that question in the Q & A section of the February 2009 issue of the magazine:

Q: You’re on the road for months at a time. How do you stick to your diet while on tour?

A: I travel with a very large knife and a Vita-Mix 4500 blender. I love my Vita-Mix blender.

Q: How do you get the knife through security?

A: Oh, I check it. I also check a special flight case that holds all my [raw food] powders and mixtures.

Jason says he travels with “plenty of nuts.”

No, he’s not talking about his band and crew.

Usually only security knows what’s in that mysterious case he packs. But if you want to find out, visit the Vegetarian Times for the entire interview.

Don’t forget to look at the picture of the crazy sounding chocolate avocado treat Jason concocted.

Morrissey’s Miss Brazil 1970, Jamie Oliver’s Master Chef

Written by Vegetarian Star on January 23rd, 2009 in Male Singers.

Morrissey Plays Alexandra Palace

Morrissey has a way with words when it comes to expressing his opinions, whether it’d be telling someone to vivisection themselves or proclaiming he’d rather eat his own genitals than work with certain people creatively.

Now he’s got some words for Britain’s famed celebrity chef and Food Network fave boy Jamie Oliver.

When asked recently by Maxim Magazine, ‘Who in your life would you most liked to “kick in the eye”?’, he replied, “That meat-fed horror Jamie “Orrible” Oliver. If he’s a master chef, then I’m Miss Brazil 1970.”

Should Oliver take off his chef hat or should Morrissey start wearing a crown?

Yes, Oliver is a meat eater, but he’s attempting to make humane progress, starting by trying to raise awareness of conditions on animal farms.

But Morrissey’s one strict cookie. We don’t think he’ll be entering the swimsuit and talent competition any time soon.

Oliver shouldn’t feel bad. It’s not just meat eaters Morrissey loathes as he also mentioned, “It will be worth being dead just to get away from Victoria Beckham.”

We’ve seen what can happen on reality TV when a vegetarian or vegan contestant can’t get the food they need for their diet.

But if anything like that happens on Vh1’s “Confessions of a Teen Idol”, vegan Eric Nies might not have a problem going hungry. It’s not like he hasn’t done it before.

The original MTV “Real World” star, who is now a life coach, once fasted for 40 days to raise awareness about obesity and world hunger, according to the Purium Health Products website.

Technically, it wasn’t complete fasting as he drank three to four energy drinks but abstained from solid foods.

Here’s a video of Eric and other former teen idols with clips from Vh1’s “Confessions of a Teen Idol.”

Ted Allen’s Cheftestant Summer “Chopped” In Octopus Debut

Written by Vegetarian Star on January 20th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Videos.

The Launch Of The Turbochef Speedcook Oven

There’s a new cooking show on the Food Network hosted by Top Chef judge Ted Allen and every week some one’s going to get chopped.

Not literally, of course, it’s not a medieval cooking show.

On Chopped, contestants, or “cheftestants” cook an appetizer, main course, and dessert. They have 30 minutes to cook each course and must also use “mystery ingredients” in the courses. The chef who can’t reveal the mystery dish to be a delicious meal at the end of the show is “chopped” and sent home.

On the January 13th debut, Chef Summer was looking to show her vegetarian and vegan cooking skills. Instead, she got screwed (or shall we say strangled) by baby octopus.

Boiling octopus meat was not the most pleasant cooking experience for Summer and it may have been why she was the first contestant to be “chopped.”

Personally, we think it should have been Katie, a 21-year-old pastry chef, who thought green onions were “strange” and didn’t know what the heck to do with them.

42nd Annual CMA Awards - Arrivals

Yes, we’re still talking about New Year’s Eve, but then again, we’re still paying off the credit card bill from Christmas.

If you watched Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, you may have spotted country singer and recently turned vegetarian Kellie Pickler wearing a faux fur coat.

The faux fur coat was confirmed to be from Cincinnati-based Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Furs, a company that really likes to fake it-from fake fur to fake leather to fake lambskin, every piece of clothing imaginable was created without harming any animal whatsoever!

Some argue that fake fur shouldn’t be worn because others might like the style and buy a real one instead. But if word is gotten out on all the lovely fake furs there are to choose from, perhaps a takeover will happen in fashion where the coats worn by models are as fake as their bosoms.

If you’re going to fur it, faux fur it!

Barack Obama is now the official President of the United States of America.

Congratulations and we wish him best of luck as he leads the nation during one of its most difficult times.

He’s gotten requests from both celebrities and regular citizens to use his position to change the state of the environment and he’s starting with his own home by planning to assess the energy efficiency of the White House and hopes to show America and everywhere else that Kermit the frog was wrong- it is easy to be green.

Hopefully, he will keep advocating a change in America’s diet  that includes more fresh produce on his Executive to do list.

Welcome aboard, President Obama!
