This year’s theme for Animal Action Week is “Born to be Wild,” and it highlights the issue of tigers becoming extinct in the wild due to human influenced destruction like poaching and loss of habitat.
Tigers are dangerously close to vanishing forever,” said Mr. DiCaprio, an IFAW Honorary Board Member. “If we don’t want our children to grow up in a world where tigers are extinct, the time for action is now.”
Patricia De Leon‘s anti-bullfighting ad has finally been unveiled by PETA. It’s refreshing to see a beautiful red dress on rose petals in place of blood drops, what would normally be the decor in a bullfighting arena. Earlier, we posted a Q & A session the model and former Miss Panama did with the animal rights group, where De Leon expressed distaste that bullfighting was celebrated in a culture with so many other beautiful, non-violent traditions.
Bullfighting is never a “fair” fight, as ultimately the bull can never be the winner. But there are other ways the matador can sabotage his opponent, causing more suffering to the animal before the fight.
According to PETA, the bulls are debilitated by being drugged and deprived of food and have heavy objects dropped on their backs. Some handlers engage in an illegal practice called “shaving,” where a few inches of the bull’s horns are sawed off, exposing nerves and further impairing the animal’s condition.
Foer’s primary reason for going vegetarian was because of the conditions of factory farms, citing they go against the values most people hold, whether they’re vegetarian or not.
Bourdain kept referencing to eating meat as a way to welcome other people and experiencing cultures outside your home. So while being vegetarian at home is okay, he’d prefer people not turn down meat dishes as guests.
Alright, vegan, eco-friendly snackers. You’ve made too much noise opening your Sun Chips 100% compostable bags, too many people complained and now Frito-Lay is switching back to the less environmentally friendly, quieter bags. Were you munching on Sun Chips in the library?
Last year, Frito-Lay came out with a completely biodegradable bag as an alternative to its plastic ones. However, the downside is that the eco-friendly bags make more noise when opening and customers started complaining.
The company is now in the transition of making the switch to the old bags for all of the flavors except Original, which happens to be vegan. So, technically, vegans eating the totally plant-based Sun Chips may still get to munch in unison with Mother Earth.

Comments Off on Meatless Mouthful–Mark Bittman On Food Labeling Importance
“We have to be able to know what we’re buying when we go out to shop for food. The way things are now, (food producers) can say if something is made without antibiotics or genetic modification, but they’re not required to state if they do use those things. I just think we have to concentrate on growing real food in the parts of the country that have climates that support it. If we can grow more real food, and buy and cook more real food, we’re all in better shape.”
Comments Off on Juliette Lewis Knows Coconut Milk Is The Most Addictive White Stuff
Oh, no. The life of stardom has turned Juliette Lewis into an addict who can’t break the habit of the white stuff. The coconut stuff, that is.
“Since I’m a health freak, it’s my crack,” the actress told New York Magazine of coconut milk, before getting her fix of a smoothie with extra coconut and hemp protein.
Thankfully, coconut milk is both legal and readily available for purchase in the non-seedy parts of town during the daylight hours. One brand you might see regularly in natural foods stores in Thai Kitchen. Originating in Thailand, the excellent non-dairy substitute is made from pressing ripe coconuts and adding nothing else–no preservatives or chemicals.
Russell Brand claims to be a sober man now, but a recent statement about the appropriateness of wearing leather from the vegetarian makes us question what was in his soymilk that morning.
According to Hollywood Life, Brand said, “It’s cruel to kill animals just to have a snack. I mean, sometimes [I wear leather], but those animals gave up their lives very gratefully.”
Unfortunately, some vegetarians may believe that buying leather is harmless since the animals are going to be killed in the meat industry anyway. However, some sources say that the leather industry is one on its own and even helps subsidize factory farming, giving it a financial boost it couldn’t accomplish on its own. How?
