Bob Barker Signs Copies Of Priceless Memories

Bob Barker has made ongoing efforts to end the suffering of the caged bears on display at various tourist attractions in Cherokee, North Carolina, including meeting with Principal Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation.

Now he’s taking his stance on Larry King’s CNN blog in hopes of reaching an even bigger audience.

“The good people of Cherokee welcomed me warmly, and many told me they agreed that the bears are kept in deplorable conditions. Bears are very intelligent, active and curious animals. They need room to roam, natural surroundings to investigate and opportunities to forage, climb and dig dens.”

“Earlier in my career, I hosted a show called Truth or Consequences. I closed the show by saying, “… hoping all your consequences are happy ones!” I hope with all my heart that Chief Hicks and the tribal council will make the consequences for the Cherokee bears happy ones. Until then, my heart and my conscience won’t allow me to do anything but ask people to stay away from Cherokee and voice their support for allowing the bears to retire to a sanctuary.”

Supervegan.com Interviews Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of several books dealing with animal issues, including The Face on Your Plate, sat down with the bloggers at Supervegan.com for a chat about factory farming, animals, and his latest book.

A few excerpts:

SV: Since most people will never have the opportunity to see a slaughterhouse or an animal agriculture facility, how can we open their eyes to the horrors of the industry and that it’s within their power to change it by going vegan? Is that the goal of the book?

JMM: Yes, that is the goal of the book. I am hoping that the people who read it will become convinced that I am telling the truth and will save themselves the horror of seeing the animals suffer and simply go vegan. It really is the only logical conclusion to the information now freely available to everyone.

SV: The next chapter, “The Fishy Business of Aquaculture,” is a more comprehensive look at the world of fish farming than I’ve seen, and many of the facts were new to me, such as that we share 85% of our genes with zebra fish and that salmon are starved for seven to 10 days before slaughter.

JMM: I knew nothing of this before I began to investigate. It was frustrating; I was never able to visit a salmon farm, for example. The people who raise fish on farms do not want us, the public, to see how these fish live. That is because we would be appalled and sickened if we could. Your summary is excellent. I devoted an entire chapter because it is such a little-known phenomenon. And because I feel that too many people think fish have no feelings, and so can be eaten without thought. They are wrong, and I was delighted to read the science that demonstrates how complex fish really are. They deserve better press.

Mark Bittman Gives Advice For The Flexitarian

Spain... On The Road Again Television Series Launch

Hey you flexitarians out there!

Congratulations for the making the choice to improve your health, save animals, and lessen the environmental impact of the livestock industry on planet Earth.

New York Times columnist and food writer Mark Bittman, who’s been advocating a vegan until dinner type approach, has given the UK Times online some tips for those who want to cut the meat from their diet.

“My ‘vegan before 6pm’ approach is just one way of doing it. Indeed, the opposite schedule — eating your heaviest meal of the day for lunch or breakfast — may make more sense to you,” Bittman said. “You can opt out of two servings of meat a week. You can start the day with oatmeal instead of bacon and eggs. My guess is that 70% of my calories now come from non-animal sources. A shift of 50% would be significant for anyone.”

“The basic line is this: no matter how you do it, you [and the planet] will benefit if you eat a higher proportion of plants and a lower proportion of everything else.”

Visit the Times online to read an excerpt from Mark’s book, Food Matters, where Mark recommends taking a B vitamin supplement and gives sample meal plans.

School Of Rock’s Mike White Records Vegetarian PSA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, July 31st, 2009 in Actors, Authors, Videos.

Writer, producer, and actor Mike White, who’s film credits include Nacho Libre and School of Rock, has recorded a brand spanking new vegetarian testimonial.

Mike’s “piggy-looking” dog is one of the reasons he decided to stop eating meat and become vegan.

“I would look at him and I’d think, ‘You know, I cannot eat pig anymore’. And besides is my dog really all that different from a pig on a factory farm? They both have their own lives and big personalities and most importantly, the same capacity to feel pain.”

Watch the clip above to hear the PSA from the former Amazing Race contestant.

“If you would spend just a little bit of time learning about the consequences of the choices you make each day — what you buy, what you eat, what you wear, how you interact with people and animals — and start consciously making choices that would be beneficial rather than harmful.”

Carol Leifer Gets Weirder: Now Jewish, Lesbian, AND Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 9th, 2009 in Authors, Comedians, Videos.

Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences Presents From Stand-Up To Sitcom

Comedian Carol Leifer, author of When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win, recently became vegan.

She lost 20 pounds in the process and says if you go vegan, both your clothes and animals will thank you.

Leifer also took a moment to show her humorous side, saying “I recently became vegan because I felt that as a Jewish lesbian, I wasn’t part of a small enough minority. So now I’m a Jewish lesbian vegan.”

For awhile she had some company, as Jewish, lesbian comedian Dana Goldberg was at one point a vegan. Now, Goldberg continues to remain vegetarian.

Justin Timberlake and Guy Ritchie visit the Punch Bowl pub in London, UK

If you thought your homeowners’ association was strict, listen to plight of Guy Ritchie.

Guy has to get permission just to grow some fruits and vegetables on his property! It’s all part of a plan to green the estate he and Madonna once shared to make it more efficient.

Because of the historical significance of Ashcombe House in Wiltshire, England, he’ll need clearance to build a greenhouse and vegetable plots.

The planning application, according to Starpluse.com, reads as following:

“In the estate’s prime when it was painted in the 18th Century, it was surrounded by extensive gardens including major vegetable gardens. In recent years, all productive vegetable gardens have been lost. The gardens that remain are formal or semi-formal flower gardens.”

“It is proposed to try to make Ashcombe House self-sufficient. The part-walled gardens leading from the back door to the staff building will be turned over to vegetables and given a row of greenhouses to produce vines, fruit, early vegetables and seedlings… Produce from the greenhouses will be used on the estate, all part of an effort to make the estate more self-sufficient and sustainable.”

Sure hope Guy gets his application approved. Home grown produce is the least he can do to make up for the forced ham diet he puts the children on at Christmas.

Rory Freedman Advice For Surviving Holiday Carnivorous Cookouts

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 in Authors.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition Opening

The 4th of July holiday is approaching for all our friends in the US, and in many cases, vegetarians and vegans find themselves stuck in a family or friend get together that tries to celebrate by grilling every species, native or not, in the country.

There’s hope for surviving this 4th without going hungry and author of the popular Skinny Bitch series Rory Freedman wrote an article in VegNews magazine for the July/August edition that gave some tips for making it through AND helping to spread some of that cruelty-free awareness while you’re at it.

People are like bags of microwave popcorn, Freedman explains. Some pop right away, some take longer, and some little bastard kernels will make you burn the whole bag and still never pop! Regardless of when and if the kernels decide to pop, all require heat.

Here’s her advice for turning up the heat this holiday weekend:

“Bringing a “Why Vegan?” pamphlet and some veggie “pigs in a blankets” might mean that, even if it’s just for one day at one barbecue, one person will forego eating meat. And hosting your own vegan shindig and inviting all your meathead friends might one day mean the different between a bowlful of kernels and a bowlful of popcorn.”
