Jonathan Safran Foer On Labels–Free-Range Cage Free (Video)

Foer questioned the validity of labeling some animal products as free range and cage free.

“Free range is not even defined,” says Foer. “It has no legal definition whatsoever.”

Jane Goodall–Personal Side Of Public Life

This year Jane Goodall celebrates 50 years since starting her work with chimpanzees.

She’s gained more attention from mainstream media through a recent book, a BBC documentary to be released in the spring and a film, Jane’s Journey, to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Jane Goodall Institute was recently awarded a four-year grant worth more than $5.5 million from the The U.S. Agency for International Development to expand conservation programs in Tanzania.

The renown scientist and environmentalist has always worked for the good of animals, even when her work caused a rift in her personal life.

Her son, Hugo, also known as Grub, is now developing an eco-tourist project in Tanzania.

But he once participated in commercial fishing, something vegetarian Jane disapproved of, and this hindered their relationship, according to The Guardian.

Goodall was raised Christian, but feels the interpretation of man having dominion over animals is incorrect, insisting the real meaning is “stewardship.”

Unlike some who identify with the same religion, Jane sees no contradiction believe evolution and God, and feels her work has made her even more spiritual.

“I realised that my experience in the forest, my understanding of the chimpanzees, had given me a new perspective,” she wrote in her book, Reason For Hope. “I was ­utterly convinced there was a great ­spiritual power that we call God, Allah or Brahma, although I knew, equally ­certainly, that my finite mind could never comprehend its form or nature.”

Michael Pollan is a hit or miss with vegetarians.

Not a veg himself, he lost even more popularity points by calling the vegans neurotic.

But he does call for an end to excessive fast food, less consumption of meat and a return to the kitchen to cook your own food.

That includes your own junk food.

In an interview with the New York Times, Michael discusses one his latest book, Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, and shares one rule about eating junk food.

“Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.” That gets at a lot of our issues. I love French fries, and I also know if I ate French fries every day it would not be a good thing. One of our problems is that foods that are labor or money intensive have gotten very cheap and easy to procure. French fries are a great example. They are a tremendous pain to make. Wash the potatoes, fry potatoes, get rid of the oil, clean up the mess. If you made them yourself you’d have them about once a month, and that’s probably about right. The fact that labor has been removed from special occasion food has made us treat it as everyday food. One way to curb that and still enjoy those foods is to make them. Try to make your own Twinkie. I don’t even know if you can. I imagine it would be pretty difficult. How do you get the cream in there?”

Hey, if the producers of Zombieland can make a vegan Twinkie for Woody Harrelson, it’s worth a try at home!

Growing up, you may have read the famous Little Women book by Louisa May Alcott.

A documentary of the author, Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, is airing tonight on PBS at 9PM EST in most areas, as part of the American Masters Series.

The film is based on a book with the same title by Harriet Reisen, which claims Alcott was raised vegetarian.

Movies usually don’t portray as accurately as the books. Will the American Masters film show an Alcott eating loads of meat during her lifetime?

Eating Animals author Jonathan Safran Foer is vegetarian, but you won’t find him eating in vegetarian restaurants.

Instead, he chooses to patronize businesses that make non-meat options available, like several of his favorite spots in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

So where can you find Foer in between him writing drafts of his next bestseller?

Well, for one, Bonnie’s Grill has veggie burgers so good you’ll curse.

“Their veggie burger is f—king great! I remember what hamburgers were like, but, believe it or not, I would choose their veggie burger over a hamburger. I know that sounds just like what a vegetarian would say, but they are maddeningly good.”

Will there be a hoard of meat eaters flocking to Bonnie’s in the New Year and talking like sailors once they take a bite?

Who would have thought that Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman isn’t a big fan of writing.

“I hate writing,” Rory said. “There are a million other things I’d rather be doing. I write because I have to.”

With bestselling books under her belt like Skinny Bitch, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and not to mention Skinny Bastard, Rory sure does a good job at something she’s not crazy about.

But Rory revealed that her motivation for never putting down the pen is the same for pushing away the meat and dairy.

“My unwavering dedication to vegetarianism was solely because of the animals—I could not and would not call myself an “animal lover” while contributing to their torture and slaughter.”

“Because if I feel so strongly about what is happening to animals, and I don’t do anything to help them, who will?”
