A bill has been introduced in Congress that would allow passengers to take their pets along with them on trains.
The Pets on Trains Act of 2013 or H.R. 2066, which is sponsored by Reps. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., and Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., has already gained the support and praise of the Humane Society of the United States.
Rep. Denham said, “My dog, Lily, is part of our family and travels with us to and from California all the time. If I can take her a on a plane, why can’t I travel with her on Amtrak, too? Allowing families to bring their animals with them will facilitate transportation and efficiency while also providing a much-needed source of revenue for Amtrak.”
Currently pets are not allowed on trains unless they are service dogs.
The press release from the HSUS says the bill would allow pets on “certain Amtrak trains,” indicating there may be some restrictions. But it would definitely be a start and an improvements to the thousands of riders every year who are forced to find other accommodations for their four-legged traveling companions.
“Millions of American families have beloved pets, and allowing them to travel by train will support the human-animal bond,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “We are grateful to Congressmen Denham and Cohen for introducing this common-sense legislation to help pet owners.”
