Ted Danson has published a book, Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them.

The actor best known as the bartender in Cheers uses Oceana as a platform to draw attention to the problem of actions that threaten the health of the world’s waters, among them overfishing, climate change and pollution.

Along with colored photos, graphs and other images that illustrate the problem, the 320 page hardcover book from Rodale Press also gives advice for stopping the changes that will ultimately destroy the stability of our waters.

Danson appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to discuss his new book and the issue of bycatch, which is marine life like sea turtles are unitentionally caught while trying to catch other organisms.

Olivia Munn appeared on The Today Show for St. Patrick’s day with host Hota Kotb.

The topic turned to the subject of whether or not some brides were happy with their proprosals. According to one poll, 1 in 4 women hated their proposals.

Kotb begins discussing her proposal, which involved a horse-drawn carriage in New York’s Central Park.

Yes, she dared to mention she enjoyed a horse-drawn carriage to the same Olivia Munn who’s spoken out about several animal welfare issues, including circus animals and horse-drawn carriages. Here’s how the conversation went:

“Did you guys just watch an 80s chick flick and then go off, and then did you realize that it’s really horrible to ride in those carriages?” Munn asked.

Meatless Mouthful–Graham Hill On Saving Cute Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 18th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Celebrity Tweets, Flexitarian.

“Cute animals are treated better than uglier ones. What gives? It’s not like we’re sleeping with them. Most of us, anyway.”

Graham Hill, founder of green site Treehugger.com and Weekday Vegetarianism, a flexitarian eating plan that only allows meat on the weekends.

Besides being “saved” in terms of adoptability at shelters and not ending up on the dinner plate, depending on the country’s culture, cute animals may also be hogging all the conservation dollars meant to save all threatened species. In the past, the cuter ones have received protection from more non-government organizations and more funds from the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Slate discusses a paper in Human Biology by David Stokes that examined the cute traits of penguins and found small differences like a shading around the eyes determined what animal walked the cute and ugly line. Stokes suggested that conservationists take the “ugly” animals and focus on their cuter parts to draw attention to them and hopefullly, generate efforts and funds to protect the species.

Sounds like a good, simple idea. Let’s start practicing with one of the uglies. How many cute features can you find in the adorable Aye-Aye below?

In case you didn’t hear the good news, McDonald’s has been trumped as the #1 fast-food chain by Subway restaurants. Worldwide, Subway now has 33,749 restaurants while McDonald’s trails at 32,737. This means more places for a healthier sandwich loaded with fresh veggies and even a veggie patty at some locations. It also means that as a business, McDonald’s needs to kick up its game to stay nose to nose with its major competitor.

In a letter to James Skinner, CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, says McDonald’s can cut healthcare expenses for its employees (it’s been thinking of dropping healthcare altogether) if it puts them on the PCRM’s 21-Day Kickstart program.

Jonathan Safran Foer Interview With Edible Manhattan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 18th, 2011 in Authors, Flexitarian, Food & Drink.

Jonathan Safran Foer

Jonathan Safran Foer‘s non-fiction book on his investigation of factory farms is so convincing, even his publicist doesn’t cook as much meat as she used to. The Eating Animals author recently interviewed with Edible Manhattan where he shared the fact that although one of his most popular books is all about food, he can’t go anywhere near it to be productive.

“I have to go somewhere where there isn’t food or I wouldn’t get anything done,” Foer said.

Here are a few other highlights:

Farmers Won’t Eat The Hotdogs They Helped Create:
“I talked to many, many different kinds of farmers while doing my research and one constant, whether they were a small farmer or a factory farmer, was that they all said they would never eat a hot dog. It seems to me a pretty good idea not to eat things that farmers wouldn’t eat.”

New evidence that Americans are interested in eating less meat or adopting a plant-based diet has appeared in one of America’s favorite pastimes, baseball.

Fifth Third Ballpark, located in Comstock Park, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids and home to the minor league baseball team West Michigan Whitecaps, is adding a veggie and hummus plate to its concession stand menu called “Chicks With Sticks.”

The dish beat out the meaty “Lollipop Bologna,” “Duck Frog Hot Dog” and “The Meat Salad” in a vote by Whitecaps fans.
