Mac Danzig: PETA, Is Like, Sooo Junior High

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 11th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Two months ago, Mac Danzig sat down with XtremeCoutre to chit chat.

He’s proof that vegan men aren’t wimpy, and tough athletes can show their artistic side as he got into photography at the age of 16. The Ultimate Fighter champion has been a strict vegan for about 4 years.

He agreed to do an ad for PETA, although he doesn’t agree completely with how the group goes about promoting vegetarianism.

“A lot of people get mad at Peta. I don’t blame them. I agree with their mission. I believe in animal rights. I think it is a great cause. But I think the way they go about their business is very junior high most time.”

“They toilet paper people’s houses and do these ridiculous protests and it makes people say, “these animal rights guys are nuts”. That ruins it for the whole movement. But there are some really cool people that work for Peta that I met. The problem is Peta has a bad rep and now my name is synonymous with them.”

Looks like he may have angered some of those “animal rights guys are nuts” people already.

“You know how much sh*t people talk on the Internet because there’s anonymity. They get offended as if I’m telling them not to eat meat. I couldn’t care less if they eat meat or not.”

Famous Veggie Quote By Common

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 11th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Black Eyed Peas 4th Annual Peapod Foundation Benefit Concert - Arrivals

So maybe it hasn’t become as famous as, “To Be or Not To Be,” or any other little verses we were forced to memorize in high school. But who knows…a hundred years from now, young pupils may be reciting the great works of Rapper Common and his thoughts on dairy:

“I think and speak clearer since I cut the dairy out. I can breathe better and perform at a better rate, and my voice is clearer. I can explore different things with my voice that I couldn’t do because of my meat and dairy ingestion. I am proud and blessed to be a vegetarian, everything became clear.”

Common, along with other famous and celebrity quotes by people like Kate Bush and Moby, are located at Happy Vegetable.

Our runner up for favorite quote is by a well known doctor, Dr. Neal Barnard, head of the Physicians Committee For Responsible medicine, vegan, and frequent Vegetarian Times contributor who specializes in diabetic research:

“The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital.”

Lipstick Jungle’s Mary Tyler Moore Predicts The Meat Chapter Of History Books

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 11th, 2008 in Actresses.

Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Honors Betty White

This September 24th, Mary Tyler Moore will be joining the cast of “Lipstick Jungle,” to play Brooke Shields’ television mom who is a retired high powered executive enjoying her new role managing her daughter’s life and telling her how to run it.

Her character’s experience may mimic Moore’s real life ascension in the entertainment business.

“I’m fortunate to have had a front row seat to the evolution of working women on television,” Moore said.

Moore was once quote as predicting that one day, meat eating would be just another chapter in the history books.

“It may take a while, but there will probably come a time when we look back and say, ‘Good Lord, do you believe that in the 20th century and early part of the 21st, people were still eating animals?'”

Even Vegan Moby Thinks You Sometimes Have To Break An Egg

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, August 9th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers, Politicians.

Duran Duran Celebrates

Dear Senator Obama…

“This might be a strange analogy for a vegan to use, but if you want to make an omelet
you have to break a couple of eggs. Start breaking some eggs.”

Vegan Moby decided to write a letter to Senator Obama in the Huffington Post to urge him to fight even harder for an upcoming presidential election victory. His less than warm feelings for McCain are shown by attacking his knowledge of both politics and geography:

“Dear senator Obama: FIGHT BACK. You’re battling a dimwit who doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shi’ite, who still refers to countries that ceased to exist in 1993(Czechoslovakia), and who believes that Iraq and Pakistan share a border.”

He’s also a little less than pleased at how the recent Democrats have challenged the G.O.P:

“In 2000 they slandered Al Gore as saying he invented the internet and was an elitist. And he fought back how? Oh, that’s right, he didn’t. And in 2004 they slandered John Kerry by questioning his military service. And he fought back how? Oh, that’s right, he didn’t. And now they’re slandering Obama in a hundred insidious and incorrect ways. And he’s fighting back how? Oh, that’s right, he isn’t.”

Judging from Moby’s criticism, Obama may have to start throwing a few punches to at least make the junior varsity team.

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts live in Las Vegas

So Joan Jett was in a hurry. And her primary job is to be a rock and roller gal. We’ll give her (the reporter) that. But it looks like blogger Mary Colurso of AI.com got a lot of other information out of Joan during the brief 10 minute interview, which didn’t cover any of Joan’s veganism because it seemed “frivolous” based on the amount of time. Like the fact that she’s a workaholic:

“Well, I don’t like any time off,” Jett said. “I think people, when they get successful, take time to enjoy it. They take time off, go on vacation, go do other things. Not that it means artistic mold, but the audience moves so much faster these days. In the past, yeah, you could take time off and come back a year or six months later. But I’ve never taken any time off. Since I started with the Runaways, I’ve always been touring, always doing it. It keeps me feeling interested, feeling out there, feeling connected.”

It was actually during one of her nonstop road touring that the founding member of 70s girl rockers The Runaways,  who later went on to be the front woman of The Blackhearts,  made the decision to stop eating meat, according to an interview with GoVeg:

“I was on the road eight months a year, and meat was too heavy to eat late at night, so I ate other things. I slowly lost my taste for meat, and at the same time, I experienced a slowly dawning awareness that it is unnecessary to eat animals in order to live in this world.”

We’re letting Colurso get by this time. But if she gets another 10 minutes with the vegan woman who loves rock and roll, we hope the first question she pops is, “What did you eat for lunch today?”

MAXIM's 2008 Hot 100 - Arrivals

Yesterday when you saw Amanda Beard on our website, she was wearing a little less clothing to protest the use of fur. However, some are saying she suspiciously has done a 180 turnaround since 2007 and may be a hypocrite.

In 2007, Beard told Meghan Cleary on her blog at missmeghan.com that’d she’d go to the grave in her favorite pair of…gasp…leather sandals.

“I wear them on the pool deck, at the beach, and even sneak them into my wardrobe for dinners,” Beard said.

She is also reported to have told SmartMoney Magazine in September of that same year that she’d never settle for buying a low-quality leather jacket.

She says she’d rather go naked than wear fur, but maybe skin is okay for her??!!

PETA has been known to sever ties with celebrities who flip-flop (pun intended) on their stance of vegness and animals rights, including breaking their relationship with model Cindy Crawford when she sported a fur coat on a catwalk after making an anti-fur ad.

But PETA also has a forgiving and understanding side.

“Making the transition to a vegan lifestyle is a gradual process,” PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said. “We’re happy to work with celebrities on even the most introductory levels.”

No word on how or if they’ll be working with their latest nude anti-fur spokesmodel.

Sarah Mair and Hugh Blair are two bloggers documenting their travel experiences at Tale Of Two Burghs. It was a visit to Edinburgh, where there is a restaurant called David Bann, where the waiter gave the dish on K.D. Lang’s favorite meal there:

“Damien asked the server what she recommended and she told us that her favorite– and k.d. Lang’s apparently— was tart of mushroom, spinach and Criffell cheese: wild and cultivated mushrooms cooked with wine, garlic and tarragon blended with fresh spinach and Criffel, a semi soft cheese from Dumfries, baked on homemade puff pastry. Served with baby potatoes, carrots and onion gravy. It did not disappoint.”

Lang once made headlines with her, “Meat Stinks,” commercials, which angered some members of the beef farming community. We’re not trying to offend, but how else should we put this? Meat stinks… angers…they say truth does hurt.

Lang’s latest album, Watershed, was released in February of this year and is the first original material she’s produced since 2000.

Olympian Amanda Beard Prefers Nudity To Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Fur.

Ahem…she sure looks comfortable in her own skin.

Joining the long list of celebs to strip for animal rights causes, Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard posed naked in front of an American flag in Beijing for a PETA advertisement.

“I have seen a lot of the videos, and (it) brings me to tears,” she said. “What (some people) think is pretty is actually something that’s very gruesome and gross.”

With her sleek toned physique, being labeled one of the sexiest athletes, and appearances in Sports Illustrated and FHM magazines, this swimmer is definitely anything but gross.
