Mark Bittman

In his latest series of columns about sustainable food and food politics, author Mark Bittman is challenging the notion that GMO foods should not be labeled as such because they are no different from regular food.

Recently, the US Department of Agriculture has approved several GMOs, including alfalfa, corn and sugar beets. And it may not be long before steroid fish, otherwise known as genetically modified salmon, hits the stores too.

Bob Barker Stays In Shape For Sex And Elephants (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on February 15th, 2011 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts, Videos.

Bob Barker was a guest on The Craig Ferguson Show when the topic turned to sex.

“That’s what I’m staying in shape for,” the 87-year old told Ferguson.

While we can’t comment on Barker’s prowess in the bedroom, we can vouch that he’s still going strong in the animal rights world. The most recent example of Bob’s outspokenness involves him calling for the release of the elephants in a Toronto zoo, citing they need a warmer climate.

“It was never intended for elephants to be in such cold weather,” Barker told the Toronto Star. “And in captivity, the biggest cause of death for elephants is foot problems. They develop foot problems, and they become infected; that infection spreads all over their body, and they die, die much earlier than they would in the wild.”

The Gap

Several high profile retailers, including The Gap, Macy’s and Liz Claiborne Inc., are urging Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), which represents Australian wool producers, to phase out the practice of mulesing. Mulesing involves cutting a part of the lamb’s rear out in order to prevent maggots eating the animal’s flesh. Animal activists say this is usually done without anesthesia.

AWI had originally promised to stop the practice of mulesing by 2013, but is now shying away from this promise, something that has angered American wool buyers.

Parvesh Cheena plays Gupta, an employee everybody loves to avoid on NBC’s “Outsourced,” a sitcom about an Indian call center located in Mumbai for an American-based catalog ordering company.

Cheena is a pescatarian who will add more “almond milk, brown rice and stir fry” to his diet when trying to eat healthier. He’s also got a weakness for cauliflower. However, he admits he is a cheese-aholic and it’s the only thing standing between him and veganism. Or maybe one of those weird vegans who eat fish occasionally.

“My big downfall is deep-dish pizza from Chicago,” Cheena told CNN’s Eatocracy. “That is why I can’t go vegan – I can’t give up cheese. I can’t give up dairy.”
