It’s about time the cast of a medical drama realize an apple a day really can keep the doctor away. Grey’s Anatomy’s actress Sandra Oh took a bunch of members of the crew and cast to Truly Vegan, a vegan restaurant in Hollywood, to sample dozens of vegan delights, according to Star magazine.

According to sources, the (TV) doctors are convinced vegan food is good medicine. Here’s more of the scoop: Patrick Dempsey really enjoyed the vegan chocolate cake. Ellen Pompeo has gone back several times since the August 1st outing to enjoy many more McDreamy vegan goodies and McSteamy Veggies.

Truly Vegan is reported to be one of Oh’s favorite vegan restaurants.

Propagandhi Describes Factory Farm Visit Nightmare

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 21st, 2008 in Animal Issues, Bands, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Propagandhi is a Canadian punk band known for taking stances in a lot of activism issues, including human and animal rights. We’ve only sampled a little of their music, so we’re not sure if we’re going ot put this in our staff CD collection or not. However, with demos with names like, “We Don’t Get Paid, We Don’t Get Laid, and Boy Are We Lazy,” it might be entertaining to look into.

Here’s a video with 2 of the band’s members discussing their reasons for going veg, including a chicken factory farm nightmare visit. They also see vegan as the natural next step after becoming a vegetarian.

It’s not too late to vote for your favorite veg celebrity for the 2008 Veggie Awards hosted by Veg News magazine. And while you’re at it, you can, cough, cough, make us a write in candidate for best veg blog. No really. We’re not listed, but there’s a beautiful empty box that will allow you to enter your favorite vegetarian blog. Just a suggestion for your veg politics, of course. We’re not radical or anything. But you may think of our write in victory as the Ralph Nador that’s not going to get away.

You could win lunch with Dan Piraro. We heard if you’re really nice, he’ll show his chicken breasts to you.

Some celebs in the running include Alicia Silvertone, Benjamin Zephaniah, and Emily Deschanel for best vegan celebrity. For vegan musicians, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, and Russell Simmons are vying for the title. And Mac Danzig, who thinks PETA is sooo junior high is competing for best vegan athlete.

But there are many other benefits to making us a write-in candidate, such as you winning fake leather bags, and vegan bakery goodies such as chocolate and veg marshmallows in the prize pool.

So take a net trip over there before the end of August, vote for your favorite (subliminal: Vegetarian Star, Vegetarian Star, Vegetarian Star) vegetarian blog, and best of luck in the drawings!

Ellen And Portia Fed Each Other Vegan Wedding Cake

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 in Couples.

59th Annual Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Longtime sweethearts Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi married in Los Angeles this past weekend.

“What can I say? I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” said DeGeneres to People magazine. “She’s officially off the market. No one else gets her. And now she’ll cook and clean for me.”

Perhaps that cooking will include more tempeh for the happy couple.

Although the two are not vegetarians, Ellen is rumored to have been one in the past and still very supportive about veg issues. Which may be why the two decided on having a completely vegan menu for the wedding reception, including vegan red velvet cake.

You can pick up a copy of People magazine this Friday to see more wedding pics!

Olympics keeping you up and sleepy? Turn off that T.V. and come here to get some great Olympic history instead.

Spencer Haywood once told Sports Illustrated magazine that as a vegetarian he eats a lot of “Sad-ass food: sorry proteins, sorry beans”-food he ate while growing up with less means that what he has today. He also takes vitamins and drinks protein shakes all for sake of being able to live long enough to enjoy his legendary glory.

In his professional basketball player days, he served on the Los Angeles Lakers men’s basketball team and helped them win an NBA title, as well as the 1968 Olympic champion U.S. men’s basketball team.

Kanye West Brings Fat Boca Burger To Chicago Fatburger Fans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Kanye West -Book Signing

He ain’t nothing but a burger digger.

Kanye West is giving Fatburger boys in Chai Town the option of a veggie burger. Well, maybe he’s not specifically offering veggie burgers, but he’s become the owner of 10 Fatburger Franchises in the Chicago area.

Besides the usual fare of greasy, bloody Baby Fat and Kingburgers, Fatburger also offers a Boca Burger. While this probably won’t convert Fatburger’s loyal flesh lovers, at least it does provide some healthier options. We don’t know the details about how a Fatburger Boca Burger is cooked (on the same grill as meat or not), so this may or not please all vegetarians.

The first restaurant is set to open in Orland Park in September.

Big Day Out Music Festival

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta was a strict vegan for awhile. Lately, he thinks his body is telling him to do some egg every now and then. From an interview with The Dwarf.

D: What have you been eating lately?

O: Eating!? Oh yeah let’s talk, I’ll talk about that! Lately I’ve been also incorporating more things into my diet. It’s been nice to taste new foods and stuff.

D: Because you were pretty strict for a while, right?

O: Yeah very strict, very regimented. I mean, I still don’t eat sugar or caffeine or anything like that. For a while there, I was just eating ‘no processed foods’ so nothing that wasn’t natural. If I could look at it and couldn’t define every ingredient that was in it, I just didn’t want to put it in my body. But lately I’ve been eating eggs for protein and stuff. And it’s been strange for me, you know, psychologically (laughs while talking) or mentally, as lame as that sounds. Ha, but my body really loves it and so I have to listen to my body because it knows more than me.

D: So are you finding a lot more energy…?

O:Well, yeah that’s what happened is that my body was telling me things, and it was falling apart, and it was giving up on me, and then so it interfered on me being able to work and me being able to express myself correctly. And so I talked to a nutritionalist[sic], and you know I’ve always fought against the idea you need animal protein and all that blah blah, and I fought that for fifteen years. But at the end of the day I also didn’t take care of myself and I didn’t take supplements because I didn’t want to take pills, blah blah blah. At some point you make some sort of a decision of what’s more important. And so I thought of it, he said, “think of it as you’re taking medicine. You’re sick, and you need medicine. So take it for a while and see what happens.” And so I made the egg, I cooked it and I felt bad for this little chicken, that I took her egg, and I ate it and then my body wanted more! It just said “Gimme more of that, I like that!”
