If you’re the frugal type, you might be interested in knowing that spending your money on “organic, vegan food” like Steve may very well be the best way save a nickel or two. The folks at Good.is–who happen to be doing a 30-day vegetarian challenge–have compared vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and meat-eating diets in terms of what one might spend on breakfast, lunch and dinner. One day’s worth of meals for a vegan was $11.15, but a meat eater put out a whopping $14.65!  Don’t know about  you, but we can think of plenty of ways to use that extra $3 a day…like spending it on more delicious vegan food.

Never mind the published data indicating eating red meat, processed meat and dead animal flesh in general significantly increases the risk of developing diabetes in men and women. Never mind the published data showing vegetarians are less likely to have diabetes as the cause of death than meat eaters.

The American Diabetes Association has responded to Steve-O boycotting its fundraiser event because meat was on the menu, basically saying, “It’s cool. Meat’s not bad at all.”

A representative from the ADA told TMZ “there is no rule that you can’t eat meat if you have diabetes — every person is different, and should be on a meal plan that works best for them.”

So if someone with an extensive family history of diabetes decides a diet of bacon and hot dogs–two meats highly linked to developing diabetes in one study–works best for them, does the ADA give a smiley sticker of approval?

Steve, who is a vegan, said serving meat at an event for diabetes awareness was like serving alcohol to recovering alcoholics and that he only agreed to go to the event because he thought it would promote a plant-based diet to prevent the disease.

Steve-O gave a charity go-karting event meant to raise awareness for diabetes the Jackass kick in the pants after learning the planners of the event were serving meat.

Steve compared serving meat at the event sponsored by the American Diabetes Association to “serving alcohol at an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting.”

“I came here because I thought this was about promoting a plant-based diet as diabetes prevention and they’re serving meat there… so I’m outta here. Its kind of an outrage to me… it’s stupid.”

One report published in the journal Diabetologia that pulled data from several studies looking at heavy meat eaters found red meat and processed meat consumption raised diabetes risk by up to 40% while heavy intake of all meat raised that risk by 21%.

And these results have been seen elsewhere. Another study in Diabetes Care found women with the highest intake of red meat were 28% more likely to develop diabetes than women with the lowest intake. Bacon and hot dogs were two of the meats tied strongly to developing diabetes.

If the ADA wants to do it right, it should only serve plant-based, whole food items at events meant to help erase the disease that’s estimated to effect over 25 million adults and children and account for over 174 billion dollars in health care in the United States.

Steve-O was one of many celebrities who attended premieres of the documentary that explores how a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse major diseases humans are facing such as diabetes and heart disease, Forks Over Knives.

Steve said he supports the film because it advocates the same lifestyle he does.

“I’m here because I’m vegan,” Steve-O said. “And I love it. I’m a big supporter of the vegan lifestyle.”

“My experience with experimenting with quitting meat was so positive, it really benefited me so much. I was just like, “Man, I could do more.”"

“So then I stopped with eggs and then I stopped eating fish. Ultimately, I bought a carton of soymilk and it was all over.”

Actress Hayley Marie Norman is a vegan and regular contributor to the blog, This Dish Is Veg.

Norman had the privilege of attending the premiere of Forks Over Knives, a film about preventing and reversing major health conditions through a plant-based diet and has written about her experience.

Author Kathy Freston hosted the event and attendees included Mac Danzig, Steve O and Marcia Gay Harden. The showing was followed by a Q & A session with the doctors featured in the movie.

“The science in this movie is absolutely astonishing,” Norman writes. “It clearly details and gives hard proof and facts illustrating the onslaught of disease and cancer all over the world with the proliferation of meat and dairy. Being of mixed heritage myself, I love how this film showed case studies from people all over the world and from every walk of life. While medicine today is just about treating the SYMPTOMS with expensive pills, this film teaches us how to treat the DISEASE itself.”

Steve-O has been living quite a docile life compared to the one he led years ago during his Jackass stunts by day and drugs and alcohol fueled stunts by night era.

Steve, who’s real name is Stephen Glover, has written a tale of the accounts before he was forced into rehab–a decision that probably saved his life.

Professional Idiot: A Memoir is set for release in June.

Steve has been drug-free and sober for three years. He’s also been animal-free for almost the same period.

He has a taste for almond milk over his cereal and confessed to eating entire packages of Tofurky slices with mustard on them.

“My life is so different today, I don’t know exactly where to begin,” Steve said. “I think the only thing that hasn’t changed about me is my sense of humour and my unreasonable hunger for the attention of others. Today, I am a 100 per cent vegan, caffeine-free, non-smoker and animal rights activist.”

Congress, listen up!

There’s no reason Democrats and Republicans can’t come together for the good of the country. Vegan Steve-O proves that a Jackass has no problem siding with an elephant.

The comedian and actor from the infamous series involving horrendous stunts on camera, Jackass, has expressed his thoughts on an elephant housed in the Edmonton Zoo in Canada, Lucy.

Last week, Steve-O took part in a protest. Activists want officials to release Lucy to a sanctuary located in a warmer climate. The sanctuary would also give Lucy room to walk around like she would in the wild.

“I’m sympathetic to Lucy because I know that elephants in their natural habitat will walk some 30 miles every day,” Steve-O said. “I don’t understand how the zoo’s able to keep her. It seems so black and white.”

Elephants in the wild may live longer, healthier lives than elephants kept in zoos. Because they aren’t able to walk as much as they would in the wild, zoo elephants are more likely to experience to joint problems like arthritis. One study found elephants in the wild lived, on average, decades longer than their captive counterparts.
