Stella McCartney Adds Sunglasses To 2012 Spring/Summer Collection

Stella McCartney has unveiled her Spring/Summer 2012 fashion collection.

As usual, Stella’s clothing will once again be crafted from animal-friendly and environmentally conscious materials and will also include stylish sunglasses.

While most sunglasses contain plastic that is derived from petroleum, Stella’s designs are made from a more renewable resource.

The collection includes three acetate and two metal frames and contain 54% castor oil seeds.

“The greatest challenge was the amount of time that was spent on research and testing to get the best quality product possible with the highest performance in terms of resistance, while still maintaining the style and finish we always try to achieve,” Stella said.

Stella considers sunglasses to be an essential part of a woman’s style and suggested owning several pairs to complement the outfit or event.

“Women have two sets: a classic pair they’ll have forever, and a more playful pair,” she said. “We’ve added that fun element to the line. ‘My mum had this mad pair with Christmas trees on them that I loved when I was little. Sunglasses are one of the only accessories that can really have a sense of humour. But you walk a fine line between looking like a complete idiot and getting it just right.”

Vegetarian Paul McCartney married for the third time this past weekend to his longtime girlfriend Nancy Shevell.

The couple’s big day was reported to feature a three-course vegan dinner, including vegan dessert.

The bride’s dress was designed by McCartney’s daughter and vegetarian activist Stella McCartney and as People reports, was inspired by the Duchess of Windsor.

The Duchess’ dress for her 1937 wedding consisted of a “high-necked, long-sleeved crepe gown.” Stella revamped the original design to feature a lower neckline and a shorter hemline.

And, as always, the dress was made from eco and animal-friendly materials, keeping with the McCartney family vegetarian principles.

It is rumored that Shevell became vegetarian shortly after she started to date Paul in 2007.

Stella McCartney spoke to The Daily Beast about growing in the vegetarian McCartney family and how it’s inspired her life today.

“It began with my parents,” Stella said. “It’s more than just saying that we’re vegetarians. It’s a philosophy of how you conduct your life and time on the planet. We were quite a responsible family. One of the things I was taught growing up was, “Do unto others as you would have done to yourself.” So it’s not just about not killing cattle and “Meat-Free Monday.” It’s a way of life. But we’re not claiming to be perfect.”

Stella continues to promote the values she grew up with by refusing to use leather or fur in her fashion collections, sourcing sustainable materials when possible and donating a portion of sales from some of her fashions to the family’s Meat-Free Monday campaign.

Blake Lively has been spotted proudly wearing the Stella McCartney brand.

And according to a source from The Daily Mail, she may soon be compensated for promoting cruelty-free fashion.

The actress is being considered to represent the vegetarian designer’s clothing.

“Stella thinks Blake would be the perfect brand ambassador for her company in America,” the source said.

This makes the second vegetarian celebrity to demand that Lively represent the cruelty-free and eco-friendly side.

Actor Alec Baldwin said Lively was the celebrity he’d most like to see behind an anti-fur campaign.

“Wow, that’s a very personal question. (Laughs). I don’t think I should name – Blake Lively,” Baldwin said. “It’s wrong of me to say anyone – Blake Lively.”

“I think she’s a really really gorgeous woman, very stylish. These are the ones who have all the influence.”

It’s no secret Liv Tyler has a love for all things Stella McCartney, especially the gorgeous, leather-free handbags the vegetarian designer carries.

Tyler once again made an appearance in style at a premiere for The Ledge as she carried McCartney’s oversized, vegan leather clutch at her side.

Last month, Tyler attended the opening of McCartney’s in-store shop at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The store is a recent addition to the already existing shops in Chicago and Beverly Hills.

Those preferring to shop in the comfort of their pajamas for vegan leather purses can still do so at Stella’s online shop.

Fur-free and leather-free designer Stella once said of the fashion industry, “I find it astounding, because fashion is supposed to be about change – I mean, we’re supposed to be about cutting edge! I can only think they don’t care as much as people in other industries. So, yes, I think people in fashion are pretty heartless. Why on earth would they use fur and leather otherwise.”

Animal conscious fashionistas in New York now have one more outlet to shop for clothing.

A Stella McCartney shop was recently launched at Saks Fifth Avenue in the city, in an event hosted by Liv Tyler that featured veggie food and cute animals.

Guests at the launch enjoyed veggie hotdogs and were kept in good company by a real live dog brought by one party attendee.

In addition to Stella’s adult line, Saks Fifth Avenue also houses the Stella McCartney children’s line on the second floor of the store.

Two other Saks offer a Stella McCartney shop, one in Beverly Hills and one in Chicago.

Known for being both a vegetarian and a sustainable designer, McCartney has said she will always continue to meet the demands of trendy fashion without hurting animals and the environment.

“I will always take the opportunity to use a beautiful organic fabric,” McCartney said. “I obviously don’t use any animal skins or furs in my collections which has a huge impact on the planet. About fifty million animals die for the sake of fashion ever year, which is extremely wasteful and significantly contributes to climate change as farming uses a lot of water, energy and land, devastate forests and pollutes oceans.”

Vegetarian and non-vegetarian celebrities are backing the new film that takes a look at factory farmed pork, Pig Business.

Sienna Miller, Stella McCartney and several other stars are all calling for a ban on factory farmed pork in Europe. Activists who created the film claim pigs are often kept in conditions against European Union law, such as slatted floors with no bedding.

“This is such an important subject,” McCartney said of the film. “To be aware is to have individual power. This film gives us the information we need to have to make a change as a consumer, to show government and food manufacturers we deserve better. And so do the pigs giving their lives in such a barbaric way. If we stop the demand they have to stop the cruelty and deceit.”

Although not a vegetarian, Pig Business does advocate ending the environmentally destructive practice of raising animals in factory farms, as well as the more humane treatment of animals that are farmed for food.

“Before I started researching the subject, I never truly realized the appalling extent to which pigs
- intelligent animals – were treated in certain parts of the world, Miller said. “I think we as meat-eaters have a responsibility to treat the animals we farm well, and that’s why I think Pig Business is an extremely important film. It really hammers home the darker side of the global pig farming industry – one that thankfully we don’t see generally here in the UK.”

Miller wants pork to be labelled so that consumers in Europe know if it was factory farmed.

Vegetarians may still get upset at the idea of “humane” meat, but steps taken towards better welfare can also lead to less suffering. If the only meat people choose to buy is non-factory farmed and more expensive, it may lead them to eat less of it.
