Paul McCartney Celebrates “My Valentine” Video Over Vegetarian Mexican Appetizers (Video)

Paul McCartney invited a slew of big celebrity names to daughter Stella McCartney’s West Hollywood clothing store to celebrate the premiere of the “My Valentine” video from his latest Kisses on the Bottom album.

Jane Fonda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin and Reese Witherspoon gathered around the McCartney family to enjoy vegetarian Mexican appetizers.

Though most of us don’t have the culinary resources of a former Beatle to throw together the perfect party featuring snacks in Cinco de Mayo style, there’s no reason to bore guests with the same old Mexican staples like guacamole and chips.

For example, you could toss the salsa and chips altogether and replace them with a fried fruit chips–plaintains. Widely used in the Yucatan and other areas of Mexico, the starchy fruit can be fried like potato chips and then dipped in the sauce of your guests’ choice.

The event can also be the perfect time to demonstrate how a vegan cheese dip works just as well as its dairy counterpart for tortilla chips, bread and other items.

Speaking of tortilla chips, why not try ending the day or evening with a Mexican dessert featuring flour tortilla, margarine, cinnamon and sugar?

McCartney’s “My Valentine” can be seen in three versions, two of which feature either Natalie Portman or Johnny Depp translating the lyrics into sign language.

The King of promoting a vegetarian lifestyle for Britain, the U.S. and the rest of the world, Paul McCartney, has compiled a list of his favorite recipes to help promote his campaign by enticing every meat eater’s taste buds, the Meat Free Monday Cookbook.

From the publisher:

“Often, though, our vegetarian repertoire is limited, with the result that our enthusiasm to continue with a meat-free day wanes when we are confronted with yet again eating the same dish. With menus for each of the 52 weeks of the year – two main recipes, plus four other ideas for each meal of the day – The Meat Free Monday Cookbook addresses this problem and is aimed at everyone who cares about the environment, is happy to eat vegetarian one day a week, but needs inspiration and guidance to do so.”

Paul, along with daughters Stella and Mary, launched Meat Free Monday in the UK, a campaign similar to the U.S.’s Meatless Monday, but with more focus on reducing meat intake for environmental reasons. McCartney has often cited the UN study that found raising livestock for food creates more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

Your meat free day doesn’t have to happen on Monday. Try McCartney’s Super Vegetable Salad, which features savory cornmeal dusted tofu strips laid over a bed of vegetables like cherry tomatoes, broccoli and green beans.

Vegetarian Paul McCartney married for the third time this past weekend to his longtime girlfriend Nancy Shevell.

The couple’s big day was reported to feature a three-course vegan dinner, including vegan dessert.

The bride’s dress was designed by McCartney’s daughter and vegetarian activist Stella McCartney and as People reports, was inspired by the Duchess of Windsor.

The Duchess’ dress for her 1937 wedding consisted of a “high-necked, long-sleeved crepe gown.” Stella revamped the original design to feature a lower neckline and a shorter hemline.

And, as always, the dress was made from eco and animal-friendly materials, keeping with the McCartney family vegetarian principles.

It is rumored that Shevell became vegetarian shortly after she started to date Paul in 2007.

“Planeat” Food Documentary Encourages Plant-Based Eating (Video)

A new film detailing three men in their quest for the ultimate diet that will save humans and the planet has been created and is currently screening in select locations in the U.S. and the UK.

Planeat follows the journeys of Dr. T Colin Campbell, the author of The China Study, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, and Professor Gidon Eshel as it encourages people to “reduce their meat and dairy consumption, and be inspired by plant-based cuisine.”

The film features interviews with vegan chefs, including Erin McKenna, founder and owner of BabyCakes restaurants in New York and Los Angeles.

Planeat has already received praise from vegetarian celebrity Paul McCartney, who started a Meat-Free Monday campaign in the UK meant to encourage consumers to eat less meat to lessen the impact of its production on the environment.

“Those of us here at Meat-Free Monday fully support the efforts made by the makers of Planet, which we hope will alert to the dangers of some of our current practices,” McCartney said.

While screenings are taking place now, Planeat will also be available for DVD purchase and for download online later in 2011.

After several months of reviewing recipes, it was down to three finalists in the competition to choose one tasty, original vegetarian dish to be included in the Linda McCartney Foods frozen entree line.

Those three finalists starred in their own commercials that were aired during ITV1′s This Morning Show, cooking their dishes and asking viewers to vote for them.

In the end, between Kate Ford’s hearty mushroom, ale and puy lentil pie, Susan Edward’s butternut squash and spinach lasagne and Robert Stordy’s vegetarian moussaka, only one was chosen to be included in the food line.

Months ago, Linda McCartney Foods launched a contest to find someone to create an award-winning vegetarian dish to be added to the company’s line of vegetarian foods. Three finalists have now been selected.

During the week of April 4-7, 2-minute commercials will be aired on ITV1′s This Morning showing the contestants making their dishes and asking viewers to vote online for their favorite. The winner will be announced on April 11 and have their dish added to the line.

So who are the three gastronomic geniuses from the UK seeking to pleasure your taste buds?

Kate Ford from Hertfordshire created a hearty mushroom, ale and puy lentil pie. Susan Edwards from Shropshire has a butternut squash and spinach lasagne and Robert Stordy of Derbyshire has made a vegetarian moussaka.

Both vegetarians and non-vegetarians were involved with the taste test that narrowed down the competition to three. Aldo Zilli, Green & Blacks co-founder Josephine Fairley, Celebrity MasterChef’s 2008 winner 2008 Liz McClarnon, Alex Connell of the Vegetarian Society’s Cordon Vert School and Alison Atkin of Sainsbury’s all made up the panel chosen by the McCartney family.

The success of the McCartney family Meat-Free Monday campaign in the UK inspired the family to launch the contest.

“Meat-free eating isn’t just for vegetarians, it’s for anyone looking to lead a healthier and more environmentally responsible way of living,” Paul McCartney said. “Linda was always passionate about creating home-cooked meals, so I have been delighted with the enthusiasm and support we have had from our competition – it’s even inspired me to try some new recipes!”

The winner’s dish will hit the shelves in August.

Paul McCartney Supports Ban Of Animal Tested Cosmetics Sold In European Union

Paul McCartney has voiced his support for a campaign to end the sale of cosmetics in the European Union that have been tested on animals.

The EU has already banned cosmetic testing on animals. And the ban to sale such cosmetics was originally scheduled to take place in 2013, but some officials want the ban delayed.

McCartney and other celebrities are using the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection’s (BUAV) campaign in hopes of convincing officials to adhere to the timeline.

“Animals should not suffer in the name of beauty,” McCartney said. “Testing toiletries and cosmetics on animals is cruel and unnecessary. Join me in signing the BUAV’s petition to ensure the sale of cruel products in the EU is outlawed by 2013. Say NO to Cruel Cosmetics.”

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of BUAV, said: “We are delighted that Sir Paul has joined our campaign to end cruel tests on animals for beauty products. Please sign our petition to the European Parliament at www.nocruelcosmetics.org. Together we can show there is no public appetite for animal tested cosmetics and urge the European Parliament to vote against delaying this ban.”

Several non-animal tests for cosmetic safety already exist, such as using cell and skin tissues, cornea eye banks and computer and mathematical models. Researchers are continuing to develop more tests, such as those for eye-irritation, that are being adopted by regulatory authorities in several countries, including the United States.
