“Subjecting animals to pain and suffering just so that we can produce a new shade of lipstick or eye-shadow is simply cruel and unnecessary in this day and age. EU politicians promised to ban the sale of cruelly-tested cosmetics by 2013 and I sincerely believe they should honour that ethical pledge.”

–Mary McCartney, on the European Union delay to ban the sale of animal tested cosmetics. Although animal testing was outlawed in both the UK and Europe, products that contain animal tested ingredients are still being sold. A ban on such products has been delayed several times over the past few years, and officials are still considering delaying the new 2013 deadline.

Paul McCartney and his photographer, cookbook author daughter Mary paid a visit to the Linda McCartney Foods factory where frozen vegetarian entrees like pizza, cannelloni, lasagna, spicy bean and sausage casserole and veggie burgers are manufactured.

The purpose of the visit was to sample some of the new vegetarian options, including a new veggie burger, Linda McCartney Mozzarella Quarter Pounder Burger, that will launch later this month.

“We always look forward to returning to the Fakenham kitchen and trialling the new dishes and catching up with the development team,” Paul said, according to the Wakefield Express.

“As a family we are delighted to see that Hain Celestial has remained loyal to Linda’s original vision and values and continued to develop a brand that not only appeals to vegetarians but can also be part of a meat-reducing diet.”

Paul became so active in the development of Linda McCartney bacon and its launch he reportedly ate it every day for breakfast in order to give the best input on its progress.

The Linda McCartney Veggie Burger currently available was recently named one of the top three in its class by Vegetarian Living magazine. The burger features a blend of wheat, barley, gluten, soy and egg flavored with a hint of onion and mustard.

Following in the footsteps of her mother Linda, who penned books like Linda’s Kitchen: Simple and Inspiring Recipes for Meals without Meat and Linda McCartney on Tour: Over 200 Meat-Free Dishes from Around the World, photographer Mary McCartney has compiled a book of her favorite vegetarian recipes, complete with photographs of the dishes she took herself.

According to Booktrade, Chatto & Windus, an imprint of Random House, have acquired the rights to the collection of meat-free dishes, schedule for publication in 2012.

“I am excited to be working with Chatto & Windus on a contemporary vegetarian cook book,” said Mary, in a press release that comes just days after the late Linda’s birthday. “My mother, Linda, became the focal point for vegetarians and meat reducers in the past and helped inspire many, through her books and actions, to realise that there was a viable and tasty alternative. I am so proud to be able to carry on what she started. Vegetarian cuisine has come a long way and with the addition of my other love, photography, we are going to try and show just how sophisticated and varied the vegetarian palate has become.”

Mary has said in the past although her children follow a vegetarian diet, she would never impose it on them. Similarly, Booktrade says the cookbook is meant to “tempt both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, enthusing readers to bring more meat-free cooking into their repertoires,” meaning recipes will more than likely contain many common ingredients that can easily be incorporated into a dish without much vegetarian cooking expertise.

Mary may entice meat eaters to recipes mimicking comfort foods like her Sunday Roast Terrine, providing not only a tasty vegetarian version of a traditionally animal-based dish, but encourage more people to embrace the McCartney family Meat-Free Monday theme–a Holiday from meat at least once a week meant to lessen the impact of the industry on the environment.

Mary McCartney has designed 100% organic cotton t-shirts for the Danish children’s label Mini A Ture. The two shirts will benefit Sunway Children’s Home, an orphanage in India, which Mini A. Ture has supported since 2005.

The shirts are available at the Selfridges store in London, and can also be ordered online.

Choosing organic cotton to design the clothing aligns well with the McCartney family’s ideals to preserve the environment. It’s estimated that cotton crops use about a quarter of all agricultural insecticides applied globally each year and according to the EPA, 7 of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton crops are either known or potential human carcinogens.

Mary McCartney‘s favorite vegetarian snack is an old standby–peanut butter and jelly, something she learned to love from watching Sesame Street.

And although PB & J sandwiches make a great item to carry in school lunches, McCartney says she doesn’t force her lifestyle on her children, even though they have chosen to be vegetarian.

“They don’t have to be,” McCartney said. “It would be their choice. I don’t like to force it on people. I don’t like to be told what to do, so I don’t like to tell them what to do.”

PB & J may be older than Big Bird, but there are numerous variations of the sandwich you can try when things get boring.

An extensive list of such alternatives can be found here, and include recipes such as Elvis’ favorite style of the sandwich–putting fried banana between the two slices of bread.

For a wilder experiment, try the peanut butter, onions and mayonnaise. Eww…maybe not. The PB and pickle is also worth grossing your friends out over.

Don’t forget there are numerous nut butters, like almond and macademia, that provide extra variety.

More celebrities are speaking in favor of the St. Ann’s Well Cafe located in Malvern, Worcestershire, England that faces closure.

The Malvern Hill Conservators have announced they will not be renewing the lease to the owner and plan to turn the spot into a tourist hub.

An online petition has gathered over 1,800 signatures and a Facebook group has over 6,500 members.

Photographer and member of the famous McCartney family, Mary McCartney, wrote, “This sounds like a wonderful cafe with vegetarian theme at its heart which is a extremely important issue for myself for personal and environmental issue.”

Martin Shaw, who also signed the petiton, wrote, “I’ve used the cafe, and as a vegetarian it was a lifeline for me – please reconsider this decision, which if carried out will deprive so many of us who need and enjoy healthy and ethical food.”

Stella McCartney has designed two exclusive T-shirts advertising her Meat Free Monday campaign.

According to Contact Music, the shirts will be available at London Gap stores and will help raise money for the campaign founded by Stella, sister Mary and dad Sir Paul McCartney to lessen the impact of meat production and eating on the environment.

The T-shirts are made from organic cotton and come in two varieties–one featuring a superhero for a boy and Stella’s signature Intarsia leopard for a girl.

Stella, a vegetarian fashion designer, said that Meat Free Monday is “about us all taking control of the environment we live in for our kids and the generations to come. Whether you eat meat or not, you can be part of this decision to limit the meat industry destroying our planet’s resources.”
