Sea Shepherd New Vessel Named After Activist Brigitte Bardot

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has renamed its newest vessel, formerly called “Gojira,” to honor a former actress with a long history of animal activism.

The Brigitte Bardot will sail through Libyan waters in the next week to protect blue fin tuna from poachers.

Bardot has been a passionate defender of many animals, including seals. In the 70s, Sea Shepherd’s Captain Paul Watson was with Bardot when she posed with a baby seal off the coast of Labrador. Bardot has called for an end to the Canadian seal hunt and has advocated boycotting some of Canada’s products to put financial pressure on the country to change.

Bardot wrote a letter to Watson after learning of the honor of having her name placed on the vessel.

Captain of my heart. I’m moved, overwhelmed and infinitely grateful that this wonderful “ savior of the seas” will wear my name to fight against those who allow themselves to butcher what is most precious in the oceans.
Thank to you Paul for this magical idea that fulfills me with pride.
Together we will win!
You are the strength and the courage, I’m the love and determination.
May the Brigitte Bardot led by Paul Watson be a symbol of victory.

Brigitte Bardot is considering running for French president, stating she’s unhappy with Nicolas Sarkozy‘s policies on animal welfare. According to the Washington Post, Bardot told the Associated Press, “Sarkozy took me for an imbecile by making promises he didn’t keep.”

The 76-year old former actress, vegetarian and animal rights activist is considering a bid for the 2012 election on the Ecology Alliance Ticket.

One such Sarkozy policy she’s in disagreement with involves Muslim slaughter practices she considers inhumane, something Bardot says Sarkozy reneged on outlawing.

Bardot wants to make it law to give animals anesthetic before their throats are slit in preparation for Halal meat.

“No matter whether it’s someone from the political left or right, we just need a voice to stand up and defend animal rights,” Bardot said.

Her potential political career isn’t just a notion in her head. The Eco Alliance Party is already aware of her intentions and has said it will happily accept her nomination.

“We think she is the best person to represent us for the presidency,” Ecology Alliance party chairman Antoine Waechter said. “If she accepts, a final decision will be taken next year.”

Brigitte Bardot found out about the Russian entrepreneurs who made a donkey parasail over a beach, forcing beach goers that included children to hear the animal screaming in terror. Makes you wonder who was really the ass in that situation.

Pretty easy to guess she’s not too happy about the fact the two will not face animal cruelty or any other charges. That’s why she wrote to Russian prosecutor Yury Chaika, asking the Russian official to reconsider legal action against the donkey’s owner.

“The donkey was strapped to a parachute and for more than half an hour was sailing in the air, screaming from horror and causing shock amongst children and adults on the beach.”

“Finally the poor animal landed, also in a horrific manner, and by then being hardly alive. I want you to act so that not only people responsible for this horrendous case are punished, but so that situation never happens again.”

The female donkey was declared physically stable after being examined, but the AFP reported “The donkey’s mental state remained unclear.”

The businessmen made the donkey parasail over the private Russian beach because they thought it would attract visitors, though we’ve yet to discover flying donkeys listed as a sales point on summer getaway brochures.

French animal rights activist and former actress and sex icon Brigitte Bardot has partnered with the leather goods company Lancel.

A vegetarian and leather company? No, this isn’t an oxymoron. Bardot is the inspiration behind the new eco-friendly bag, which currently can only be seen in sketches, as it’s just in the very earliest stages of development.

Since 1876 the company has been making handbags of the animal hide type, so this should come as refreshment and sign of yet another business recognizing the market for green and cruelty-free.

Still, some are already arguing it’s risky business, especially for Bardot’s reputation as Lancel’s main product is still leather.

Here’s what The Frisky has to say about it:

“Perhaps Bardot’s intention is to attempt to change the materials Lancel uses, but it’s doubtful that a company creating leather bags since 1876 would all of a sudden go green. Just sayin’.”

Animal activist Brigitte Bardot recently wrote to Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg, condemning the Dutch goat and sheep cull that started last week and is expected to continue over the next month.

Bardot said the cull is a, “scandalously disproportionate slaughter which is deeply shocking because of its systematic character.”

Some 40,000 pregnant goat and sheep are expected to be killed.

The animals spread Q fever bacteria when they miscarriage and authorities estimate 2,300 people have become infected with Coxiella burnetii this year, while six people died from the infection.

Bardot states that Q fever in humans can be treated with antibiotics.

Q fever is no ordinary cold–it can give those infected with two weeks of shiver, headaches and a slow pulse rate.

Vaccinating animals can prevent Q fever.

Should the Dutch government have invested in an ounce of prevention versus using this cull as a cure?

Animal activist and vegetarian Brigitte Bardot has never been hesitant to express her opinions about the fur industry.

And during a recent interview when she was asked what she thought about women who wore fur, Bardot responded, “The women who carry fur these days are idiots. Wild animals are bred in small cages where they go crazy because they cannot lead any kind of natural lives. They are imprisoned in concentrated breeding farms. Minks are gassed, foxes are electrocuted… this complete industry is cruel, barbaric and absolutely useless.”

Point taken.

If you’re the compassionate and intelligent type, you’re obviously anti real fur and would probably love to know what stores and companies sell the real deal.

When making your next fashion decisions, refer to the Humane Society of the United State’s list of fur free designers and retailers.

Abercrombie & Fitch, for example, stated in an email in 2007 that all of its furs were fake.

And Ed Hardy even went so far as to state, “As someone who cares about animals, I am deeply offended by and opposed to the inherent cruelty of animal fur.”

So guess that means Jon Gosselin‘s favorite clothing line is safe.

Take a look at the list, carry it in your pocket when making your business decisions and never worry about Brigitte calling you an idiot.

Brigitte Bardot is asking the European Union to institute a Vegetarian Day to help fight global warming.

In a letter to European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barrosoa, Bardot said “a few weeks before the Copenhagen climate summit, I would like to draw your attention to the need to question cattle-farming, whose effects on the environment are of concern.”

Bardot backed her passionate writing with facts from studies conducted by World Bank and the UN Food Agency.

“If ‘developed’ nations were to reduce their meat consumption, there would be less famine, which kills almost six million children each year,” Bardot wrote.

“Our collective duty is to act at all levels, including by promoting a vegetarian diet,” she said

“A European ‘Vegetarian Day’ would be a strong symbol.”

Turning 75 years of age in September, Bardot shows no signs of “retiring” from her mission to save animals, the planet and human health.
