Alicia Silverstone‘s baby is two years old!

Not her newborn baby boy, Bear Blu, but her other vegan pride and joy–the website dedicated to the vegan diet and lifestyle, TheKindLife.com.

Silverstone has been blogging vegan recipes, advice on veg children and breastfeeding, exercise and more since the site started as a component to her best-selling book, The Kind Diet.

And now, she’s giving away a bag of goodies in honor of the celebration.

“Two years ago, I posted this video, inviting everyone to join the community,” blogs Silverstone. “Since then we’ve grown to almost 40,000 kind lifers! I’m amazed and overwhelmed with gratitude – I can’t even believe this community didn’t exist before! Alicia Silverstone‘s fans know the actress could probably eat from the same bowl her dogs do. Silverstone placed her pets on a vegetarian diet years ago and has seen positive results.

“Since I changed their diet about 10 years ago, they’ve had no fleas or itchy hot spots,” she said. “Their immune systems got so strong that those things don’t bother them anymore.”

Changing a pet’s diet is no easy decision, but a few experts have some advice on making the decision to put Fido and FeeFee on grains instead of beef. WebMD says the main risks associated with putting pets on vegetarian and vegan diets include inadequate protein intake, amino acid imbalance and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

“For cats, it’s really inappropriate. It goes against their physiology and isn’t something I would recommend at all,” said Cailin Heinze, VMD, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and assistant professor of nutrition at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

“For dogs, certainly vegetarian and vegan diets can be done, but they need to be done very, very carefully. There is a lot of room for error, and these diets probably are not as appropriate as diets that contain at least some animal protein.”

There’s nothing worse than reading a can of veggie soup and discovering some genius put beef or chicken stock in it.

The experience can be so frustrating, it makes you want to make your own!

Alicia Silverstone is helping her Kind Life blog followers this week by giving them a recipe for veggie broth by Madeleine Ignon, a San Francisco artist.

Ignon put together the recipe to save money by avoiding buying brands at the grocery store.

The broth uses every part of the vegetable, making it rich and full of flavor while avoiding waste.

She adds this to tomato sauce, hummus and cooks beans, rice and vegetables in it.

Alicia Silverstone often uses her website The Kind Life to blog about her latest adventures in vegan cooking, health and fitness news. Kind Life readers may soon hear more about the Clueless star’s adventures in vegan parenting. Silverstone told the British edition of Ok! magazine that she plans to raise baby Bear Blu on the same diet she ate to nurish him during pregnancy.

“Bear was grown on vegan food and we’ll continue nourishing him with a healthy diet,” Silverstone said. “He’ll be eating an organic plant-based diet. I intend to take great care of his precious new baby body so I’m committed to giving him nothing but the purest and most healthy food possible. We want to keep his immune system strong so that he’ll be super healthy – which is just one of the many reasons he’ll eat vegan.”

Pediatrician Dr. Sears and registered nurse Martha Sears addresses several questions about raising a child on a vegetarian or vegan diet on their website for parents at AskDrSears.com.

AskDrSears says raising a vegan child may be slightly more risky because of the need to supplement with calcium, Vitamin D and B-Vitamins.

Raising a little vegan requires more planning and nutritional know-how to insure that the child gets enough calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B-12, and some of the other B-vitamins. Yes, children can grow normally on a diet of grains, legumes, and greens, yet it’s a bit risky. A wise parent should seek periodic advice from a nutritionist experienced in vegan diets.

AskDrSears suggests using fortified products, such as enriched soy milk and orange juice to prevent these problems.

Alicia Silverstone has shared some of her favorite veg spots she either visited or learned about while filming Vamps in the Detroit, Michigan area.

The vegan foodies on the West Coast may get jealous, because this midwestern town is home to so many veg-friendly establishments, they’ll no longer be able to claim California as the mecca for eating meatless.

“I tried to get to as many veg or veg-friendly restaurants as I could while I was there, but I worked so many hours, night and day, that there weren’t a lot of opportunities to go out to eat,” writes Silverstone on her blog.

“I didn’t have time to make it to all the places I wanted to go, the recommendations made me drool!”

She did make a stop by the Inn Season cafe, Metro Detroit’s home to fine vegetarian dining. Featuring Brunch, Lunch and Dinner menus, Inn Season always has a veggie burger, Mexican entree, pasta or pizza that will delight vegetarians or vegans.

Veg Star recommendation: The Big Baprawski–tempeh patties served double-decker on a whole grain bun
with cheese or vegan Daiya cheese, sautéed onions, lettuce and tomato. Served with a side of coleslaw, chips and Thousand Island sauce.

What Crepe? isn’t an animal-free establishment, but is more than happy to accommodate any vegetarian or vegan with additions like tofu, wild mushrooms and other veggies and fresh, seasonal fruit. Plus, you can start your most important meal of the day with a tall glass of soy milk.

Memorial Day is one of those meaty holidays where you demand the carnivores cook something veggie far, far away from the meat on the grill. It’s nice of them to do that, but if you’re an extreme health veg diva, it isn’t enough to throw a handful of greasy, salty potato chips on your plate next to your oat and lentils burgers.

Can we get a nutritioius, veggie chip to complement that veggie burger?

To borrow a slogan from a past presidential campaign, “Yes, we can!”

Alicia Silverstone blogs lovely veg thoughts on her website The Kind Life, some of which include recipes.

She recently found a recipe for Kale Chips on the website of one her Kind Life fans.

Vegan Pandamonium has instructions for making crispy, kale chips that are so simple, the omnivores have no excuse to add them to the list of things to do for “the annoying vegetarian coming over for the barbecue.”

Kale is one of those green, leafy vegetables that make an excellent source of calcium for vegans, as the body absorbs it better than your clothes unfortunately absorb the smell of smoked meat at the mixed eater barbecue.

Ingredients

• 1 bushel of kale (fresh, not pre-cut)
• 1 Tbsp olive oil
• ½ tsp salt

Instructions:

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees
• Rinse and dry the kale well
• Rip up the kale into bite-size pieces
• In a large bowl, massage the olive oil and salt into the kale – you may want to add or use less salt depending on your taste
• Spread the kale on a baking sheet so that none of the pieces are on top of each other
• Bake for about 18 minutes until really crispy
