Alexis Stewart Welcomes Baby Via Surrogate

In the world of vegetarian/vegan moms and their babies, we almost missed one more veg mom bringing a child into the world in 2011.

Martha Stewart‘s vegetarian daughter, Alexis Stewart, recently welcomed a baby via a surrogate.

Alexis, who recorded a PSA urging people to adopt turkeys and not eat them, and her mother are probably looking forward to all the joys a new baby and grandbaby bring. Except the new title of “grandma.”

Just because Martha is technically a grandma, doesn’t mean she’ll be responding to that name anytime soon, according to The Daily Mail.

“Martha is going to be called “Martha”,’ Alexis said.

“She seemed to have no problem with it. I was like, “Do you really want to be grandma?” I don’t like the term grandma!”

Peterson’s advice is simple for both moms–or that “other” word for moms of moms–to take.

Is Phil Mickelson having second thoughts about going vegetarian to ease his symptoms of psoriatic arthritis?

From comments made to the press, it seems Mickelson is either unsure if the diet is helping his condition or he’s afraid the turkey will get the best of him for Thanksgiving.

“I’ve been doing it for just over four months and I’m just having second thoughts,” Mickelson said. “I don’t know if it really is going to make a difference or what. So we’ll see. We can talk about it in January, and I’ll have a better idea — see how the holidays go.”

Instead of getting disappointed over how his lefty is responding, Mickelson should also consider the other physical conditions a vegetarian or vegan diet can prevent–like heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity–something his multiple burger a week habit will surely bring on if he returns to that lifestyle.

In the meantime, how about a little advice for Phil and other newbies hoping to survive the holidays without cheating. Not everyone is a fan of the famous Tofurky loaf? That’s okay. Why would you want to imitate what millions of meat eaters do all the time anyway?

Cookbook authors Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough suggest emphasizing meat-free side dishes for Thanksgiving. But our favorite suggestion is Scarbrough’s idea for vegetable topped pizza.

“I think kids would be thrilled to have pizza show up at a Thanksgiving table,” Scarbrough said. “And in my house, we tend to eat at 2 or 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and there’s always the need for a snack from about 11 to noon. It would be nice to have this out, cut into little squares in the hours before the meal.”

Tal Ronnen has created a Thanksgiving meal featuring Gardein faux chicken, which some vegetarians think tastes so much like meat, it’s scary.

Martha Stewart may have made dishes like a loaf with beans, nuts and mushroom gravy for daughter Alexis after she announced she was no longer having Domestic Diva drumsticks.

Alexis Stewart, the vegetarian daughter of household diva Martha, and her co-host Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, recently welcomed Kathy Freston, author of several books on wellness and the same woman who convinced Oprah Winfrey to go vegan for a few weeks.

As expected, Freston was there to enlighten the Whatever ladies’ audience on what a vegan diet is and how following a plant-based diet can eliminate many health issues.

Freston’s transition to veganism didn’t happen overnight. As a girl who “grew up in the South eating chicken fried steak,” she found it easier to go vegetarian first, giving up her old standbys of chicken and steak.

“I gave up eating one animal at a time,” Freston said.

Sounds like a plan. Can you start giving up one animal next month by eating a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner instead of a bird?

Martha Stewart Living Discusses Vegetarian Sources Of Iron

Martha Stewart had some experience with adding vegetarian sources of iron into meals when her daughter Alexis chose to become vegetarian.

One reader on her Martha Stewart Living column who happened to be a mother of a vegetarian daughter, was afraid her child wouldn’t get enough iron if she didn’t eat red meat.

Certain traditional vegetarian foods like soy may interfere with iron absorption, due to the presence of phytate, and calcium from dairy products can do this as well.

“There are plenty of iron-rich foods outside the animal kingdom, and a well-planned vegetarian diet can provide an ample amount,” the article reads. “Spinach, kale, collard and similar leafy greens are all good sources, as are beans, nuts, and whole grains, including quinoa and wild rice. Iron-fortified cereals and pastas are also worth seeking out.”

Getting plenty of Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables is actually favorable for a veggie, as this increases absorption.

Martha, who’s Sirius XM radio host daughter Alexis, is vegetarian, has been regularly featuring vegetarian friendly segments, from her meatless Thanksgiving ideas to celebrating National Soy Month.

Martha Stewart recently featured a vegetarian Thanksgiving episode on her cooking show.

In case you didn’t know, Martha’s daughter, Alexis , has been a longtime veg and activist.

Growing up, Martha and her family raised their own livestock and after Alexis realized the animals on the farm were the same ones on her plate, she decided to veg out.

Could Martha have spent her time crafting these dishes to please Alexis while she was growing up?

Martha’s “Hearty Vegetarian Thanksgiving” menu can be found on her website and features delish sounding recipes like Celery Root, Persimmon, and Swiss Chard “Stuffing”, Vegetarian Mushroom Gravy, and a vegetarian “loaf” featuring beans and nuts.
