Alicia Silverstone Talks Juicy Beauty With “Entertainment Tonight” (Video)

Alicia Silverstone spoke with Entertainment Tonight about her new line of organic beauty products, Juicy.

Silverstone said she was motivated to put her name behind the product because she cares so much about health.

Because the skin is so absorbent, with all the chemicals contained in most cosmetics, Silverstone said you “may as well drink them.”

Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, named one of the “25 most influential women” by People en Español and star of Telemundo series La Reina del Sur, took on a new role of protecting animals for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Holding her rescue dog Lola, Castillo urges pet owners to “never leave animals to fend for themselves.”

“My dog Lola depends not only on me for food, shelter and basic needs, but also for love and from protection and harm, including bad weather, cruel people, other animals and cars. Please fiercely defend your animals by never leaving them outside unattended or chained. And never allowing them to roam in the streets. Keep them indoors where it’s safe.”

Aaron Simpson Going Vegan For Next UFC Training

Aaron Simpson has been a vegetarian for over a decade that’s helped him create an impressive Mixed Martial Art record.

Now he’s thinking of taking his diet to the next level and nixing all animal products from it.

Simpson is transferring weight classes and he thinks the diet will help him shed a few pounds.

“The weight cut,” Simpson said of his biggest fear of going from Middleweight to Welterweight. “I will probably go vegan for this training camp. I am working with George Lockhardt who says the cut won’t be nearly as difficult as I think. At age 37, I haven’t weight 171 pounds since my Senior year in high school.”

Since it’s been shown you can lose weight on a well-balanced vegan diet without even having to watch calories and portion sizes, Simpson should have no problem accomplishing his goal.

He’ll probably be consuming plenty of vegan Gardein products to help get him there.

Questlove‘s catering options have sure taken a different turn.

The musician told Billboard about what used to be on the menu in the early days when The Roots toured.

“The first people we ever toured with were the Beastie Boys…at the time half our band was vegan, the other half was vegetarian, some just omnivores. It was very weird to every day see a display with Cocoa Puffs and fake turkey and fake ham and seafood, specialty free range products and Whole Foods crates. Caterers would look at us like we were crazy.”

Now Questlove has opened a catering business and it doesn’t look like ? Loves Food and Love’s Drumsticks is putting anything faux on the menu.

Maybe he should take some suggestions from the vegetarian bum who approached him two years ago.

Kathy Freston On Chicken And Obesity

She’s already recommended skipping the chicken for environmental health.

Now vegan coach and author of The Lean Kathy Freston has written an article at the Huffington Post on how skipping chicken can also do wonders for human health, especially obesity.

Most chickens are bred with genes that make them grow bigger, faster.

And these genes contribute to a bird that contains more fat and calories, as a study carried out by Farm Forward and Kansas State University discovered.

“So now chicken has 10 times more fat and ten times more calories, so that could explain why chicken has been tied to human abdominal girth,” one researcher said.

“Ten times more fat and 10 times more calories can be related to a fat belly, that’s for sure,” writes Freston. “It makes sense that our crisis of obesity might very well be closely tied to the daily consumption of chicken by many millions of Americans.”

“We’ve all seen chicken portrayed as the low-fat, heart-healthy alternative to red meat for years, but it no longer adds up. You might want to lean away from eating birds and lean toward more plant-based options of protein like black beans, lentils, tofu, chickpeas and whole grains.”

Bill Maher On Future Vegetarian President

With several women who’ve ran for high political offices, including president and vice-president, an African-American president in office with several other minorities under his leadership, one might think the United States has come a long way in equal opportunity and diversifying those that run the country.

But we’ve yet to see a president who eats tofu served from the White House kitchen. And Bill Maher doubts we will soon.

“I was thinking the other day, I don’t think we could even have a vegetarian president,” he said. “Not that I’m a strict vegetarian. But in the mindset of mid-America, I don’t think they would vote for a vegetarian. I think they would vote for a gay president before they would vote for a vegetarian president. They just see it as something so exotic and foreign and un-American.”

While America isn’t about to exchange every chicken finger for seitan anytime soon, it’s not far-fetched at all to imagine the man or woman who will one day reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave will eat a plant-based diet and even promote it for the country.

Diet related like obesity, heart disease and cancer are affecting health care costs, a major issue facing the country. According to one study, medical costs attributable to meat consumption were estimated at $28.6 billion to $61.4 billion annually for diseases like hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, gallbladder disease, obesity-related musculoskeletal disorders, and foodborne illness.

A real leader of the country would take a look at these numbers and see the obvious opportunity that promoting a plant-based diet would do for the country’s budget and waistline.

We already have an alumnus in club, as Bill Clinton changed his un-American diet preference of cholesterol and fat-laden cheeseburgers to the healthier all-American one of lentils, legumes and beans.

Joel McHale Gets Eco Lecture From Kristen Bell

Joel McHale didn’t take a course called Environmental Activism 101 at Community‘s college in Greendale, Colorado, but actress Kristen Bell was sure to give him a mini-lecture on the subject when the two bumped into each other at the grocery store.

Lesson 1: Plastic is bad. Chicken’s even worse.

McHale was interviewed by Bell’s husband, Dax Shepard, when he mentioned the incident.

McHale: I saw your wife at Gelson’s [supermarket], and she lectured me about getting plastic bags.
Shepard: She did. That’s very her.
McHale: Totally lectured me.
Shepard: She was probably carrying around our big, green Costco bags.
McHale: Yeah, and I think I had a whole roasted chicken, and I was like, would you like some? And she said no, I’m a vegetarian, and I’m like, there’s a surprise!

“Substitutes for animal products” is on the syllabus for next week!
