The first episode in a web-based series featuring Robin Quivers and a vegan chef through various culinary adventures has been posted to YouTube.

“Vegucating Robin” is Quivers’ way of introducing herself to new vegan dishes since experiencing food monotony after being vegan for five years.

Quivers and Chef Gavan make “Cannellini Bean Concerto,” a vegan dish that requires only eight ingredients, which is a nice change from recipes found in many cookbooks, magazines and elsewhere that sometimes require you spend twice as much on groceries in order to purchase the ingredients for one new dish.

In this episode, Quivers helps name the dish, describing it as something that “brings all the flavors together,” making it a “concerto.”

The recipe for Cannellini Bean Concerto can be found at GavanMurphy.com/vegucating-robin. Hopefully, all future recipes from the episodes will also be available to print.

Stay tuned for December 8th’s show titled, “It’s not pesto without pine nuts!”

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres has voluntarily “killed herself” by not Tweeting until enough funds are raised for a campaign to draw awareness to HIV/AIDS and find a cure.

The vegan talk show host gave her last Tweet, urging her followers to visit KeepAChildAlive.org to donate to the cause.

“I’m logging off Twitter to raise money for Keep a Child Alive. Pledge here to bring me back to life!”

Several celebrities are participating in the event, including Kim Kardashian, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga, leaving a total of almost 30 million followers on Twitter without updates until $1 million is raised for the charity that Alicia Keys initiated by signing off her Twitter account.

The official video for the campaign can be viewed below. Visit KeepAChildAlive.org for more information and BuyLife.org to make a donation.

“Tofu. I thought that was like touche. I didn’t know it was food.”

Snooki, on every veg’s favorite soybean curd. The topic of tofu came up on an episode of Jersey Shore when she, Sammi “Sweetheart” and JWoWW have a bite to eat at restaurant. Thankfully, JWOWW comes to the rescue and explains tofu is, “all-protein, it has no taste and it takes the taste of whatever.” JWOWW gets extra points as our sweetheart because she adds that it’s “good for you,” and doesn’t have any derogatory statements about tofu or vegetarians. A clip from the scene can be viewed below.

“Convicted Vegetarian” Web Cooking Show By Yves Veggie Cuisine (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 25th, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Videos.

Convicted Vegetarian is a new web-based cooking show on YouTube which features chef Vic, a biker and rock musician, demonstrating vegetarian recipes using Yves Veggie Cuisine products, which is sponsoring the shows. Chef Vic made the decision to give up meat after his children were born, but make no mistake about it, animal flesh is one of the few things Vic gave up for fatherhood.

Still retaining what we hope is a pleather jacket, long hair and earrings, Vic hosts a show that symbolized by a chef’s hat sitting on a skull and crossbone, breaking the stereotype of vegetarian men being docile, passive or wimpy.

Chef Vic has made corndogs with slaw, veggie burger dishes and the clip here is for vegetarian Thanksgiving stuffing using Yves Veggie Brats.

More episodes are available at youtube.com/convictedvegetarian.

Glee may have sustainable eating, veg-friendly actresses like Lea Michele and Jenna Ushkowitz in the cast, but the show could do a little better when it comes to greening the set. At least a recent episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow as the substitute glee club leader in “The Substitute” could have.

In a behind the scenes clip, Zach Woodlee, co-producer/choreographer of the show estimates they went through 300 umbrellas or so to film a scene putting a modern twist on “Singing In The Rain” by adding some Rihanna lyrics to it. This was because the umbrellas kept breaking during different takes.

For the rest of the season, the cast is ordered to only buy eco-friendly umbrellas, made from things like recycled aluminum and steel, bamboo handles and 100% PET bottles like the Tot eco’Brella.

Then, maybe we’ll stand under their umbrellas, ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh.

Eve Wouldn’t Wear Her Dog As Fur–Is She Already Doing So? (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 24th, 2010 in Female Singers, Fur, Videos.

Eve

Singer Eve gave an interview where she ranted on animal right activists who criticize fur wearers. “Don’t force your opinion upon me. I like fur. And there are a lot of beautiful furs. And I’m gonna rock my fur and you better not throw nothing on me,” Eve said. She then exclaimed, “I wouldn’t wear my dog!”

Ha! We’d love to be the ones who Blow Her Mind. Eve doesn’t even realize that dog fur has been marketed as “other” and incorporated as clothing that’s been sold in the U.S. Even worse, faux fur wearers have been tricked into thinking they were wearing compassion, when they too were wearing dog fur. If you choose to don the fake look, but don’t want to be duped like Eve,  here are some tips to determine if the retail brand you’re wearing hasn’t told a faux about the nature of the fur. These tips are complements of Pierre Grzybowski, manager of the fur campaign for the Humane Society of the United States.

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin has angered animal rights activists after clubbing a Halibut fish she caught during her Discovery television series, Sara Palin’s Alaska.

According to the Washington Post, In Defense of Animals called the clip a “snuff film” while Alaska fishermen said it was a “humane” way to kill the animal.

Regardless of what side you take, one thing’s for sure. If Palin’s show ratings continue to drop, her televised Alaska experience will surely be clubbed from the network. Viewership dropped 40% during last week’s show.

Joseph Garner, an assistant professor of animal sciences at Purdue University, demonstrated through an experiment that fish do feel pain and respond with different behavior when they do. Like humans, morphine also appears to make them happier when faced with painful stimuli. Surely, the halibut in the video was wondering where its IV pump was during the ordeal.

FYI, Tofurky isn’t jiggly–it’s actually a firm loaf like any other prepared turkey, that comes stuffed with wild rice and bread crumbs and even vegan down to the gravy.

This Dish Is Veg has some tips for cooking the no-bird, which includes alternative methods to the ones on the box.
