Nikki Reed Has Genuine Vegetarian Vampire Birthday

Nikki Reed doesn’t just play a “vegetarian” vampire as Rosalie in the popular Twilight saga movies. She’s one in real life. Vegetarian, not vampire, that is.

The actress celebrated her 24th birthday at the Marquee Dayclub at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas this weekend with her husband, brother and friends.

Haute Living reports Reed enjoyed fresh summer salads and veggie “sushi” rolls and a vegan chocolate cake from Red Velvet Cafe.

From the menu, Red Velvet Cafe sounds like a dream come true for Sin City vegetarians and vegans. Guests are encouraged to notify the wait staff if they are vegetarian or vegan upon being seated. And once settled in, there are several options that are either designed for vegetarian diets or can be modified for them.

Vegan meats are available for items like the Taco Salad. Pizzas can be ordered with vegetarian pepperoni and vegan chicken nuggets are on the appetizer menu to get you started.

If veggie meats are not desired, there are plenty of traditional vegetarian entrees like hummus dishes, veggie wraps and paninis.

At least someone is following the advice to stop eating meat in public.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dined with President Barack Obama and several other leaders in Washington, including House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev).

The Atlantic reports Pelosi ordered a “vegan sub with sprouts” from Taylor Gourmet, an Italian deli and market specializing in Philadelphia-style hoagies that happens to have a separate vegetarian menu with several sandwich options.

Obama ordered his usual taboo carnivorous fare of “12-inch Spruce Street hoagie for himself, which has roast turkey, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and sharp provolone on house-made bread.”

All of Taylor Gourmet’s veggie sandwiches come with cheese, but any small business good enough to serve the President could not possibly have a problem taking the dairy off for some of his vegan constituents.

Go for the “Christian Street” with portabella mushroom, arugula and roasted red peppers. Or take a walk down “Lancaster Avenue” for grilled eggplant and marinara.

NASCAR and IndyCar owners are being praised by PETA for teaming up with Levy Restaurants to offer vegan food to its fans at several racing tracks, including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Infineon Raceway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“Compassionate and health-conscious car-racing fans who take advantage of vegan options at the track can help make sure that they’ll be around for many more races to come,” said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk, who is said to be a racing fan. “After all, vegan food is high-quality fuel for people, but cholesterol- and saturated fat-laden meat, dairy products, and eggs slow you down because consuming them is like pouring sludge into your transmission.”

“Whether they’re for Team Lally, Earnhardt, Hamlin, Stewart, Patrick, or anyone else, race fans always have a reason to cheer when they’re treating animals and their bodies well with racetrack fare such as the Going Green Salad With Fried Green Tomatoes, the Summer Vegetable and Tofu Flatbread, or the ever-popular Sloppy Jane made with tempeh, peppers, onions, and molasses and brown sugar barbecue sauce,” writes PETA on its blog.

What exactly does this Sloppy Jane contain again?

Promising to tempt the “most devout carnivore,” the vegan sandwich is filled with, “tempeh, fresh tomatoes, peppers, onions, savory spices and a touch of molasses.”

Placed on Levy’s menu this season, this faux meaty sandwich is predicted to reach the checkered flags before all of its competition!

Burger King Going 100% Cage Free

Burger King has once again taken a step to provide more ethical, humanely produced food.

The fast food giant that claimed to be the first to sell a vegetarian burger nationwide has committed to sourcing 100% of its eggs from cage-free suppliers and purchasing pork from suppliers that have pledged to phase out gestation crates for pigs.

“For more than a decade, Burger King Corp. has demonstrated a commitment to animal welfare and, through our BK Positive Steps® corporate responsibility program, we continue to leverage our purchasing power to ensure the appropriate and proper treatment of animals by our vendors and suppliers,” said Jonathan Fitzpatrick, chief brand and operations officer of Burger King Corp. “We are proud to announce these new, industry-leading commitments that support meaningful standards of humane treatment in our U.S. supply chain.”

Burger King began phasing in cage-free products in 2007, and the transition to 100% cage-free eggs is expected to be completed in five years.

Zooey Deschanel is desperately in need of tomato soup in a new commercial for the iPhone 4S/Siri.

Being the celebrity diva she is, she’s not just looking for a place that will serve it to her, but deliver it to her doorstop, as she’s unwilling to put on shoes for the rainy afternoon.

Have no fear, the new iPhone 4S/Siri is capable of letting her know which restaurants in the LA area deliver tomato soup. And we’re tickled pink that one of them is incredibly vegan friendly.

The Mendocino Farms restaurant is known for its seasonal items, use of local farmers and so much more than soup.

Vegans who are hungrier for something more than a liquid meal should opt for the seasonal Spring 2012 Vegan BBQ Torta. The sandwich is topped with shaved seitan and pinto beans slow braised in chipotle citrus barbecue sauce, smashed avocado, vegenaise, pickled red onions, candied jalapenos, tomatoes, shredded romaine on toasted ciabatta.

There’s also the The Vegan Spicy Soyrizo & Black Bean Wrap or Vegan Shawarma. Looking to make the Traditional Vegan Club with tempeh bacon extra “meatier?” Add some extra veggie bacon for only a couple of bucks.

There’s a question about the restaurant’s delivery policy though. From the menu, it appears the West Hollywood location delivers for catering events of 10 or more people, but it’s hard to find delivery info for the other Mendocinos. So you might have to invite a few friends over for the experience. A night of indulgence with yourself doesn’t sound bad either.

Carrie Underwood is gracing the cover of Vegas Magazine and inside she reveals one of her favorite places to eat is at a restaurant the King of Vegas himself turned into a vegan paradise.

“We always go out to eat when we’re in town. I love Lakeside at Wynn—Mr. Wynn is a vegan so they have a lot of stuff on the menu that I can eat,” said the country music singer who recently made the switch from vegetarian to vegan.

“I know where the Whole Foods is there, too. If we’re not eating out, I’m making my own food. I will never order room service—it weirds me out!”

In Vegas, there’s no need to get weirded out at all because Steve Wynn, also a vegan, has ensured all of his establishments have a full vegan menu offering more than just a plate of seasonal vegetables, but a substantial protein component as well.

Plant-based Gardein protein is used to create a variety of faux chicken and beef dinners, calcium-enriched tofu substitutes for cheese in vegan ricotta and nuts have been blended to create a base for items you’d normally find “cream” in.

Who cares if the chicken or the egg came first? Forget boxers or briefs, just go Au naturel. The important question to ask yourself everyday is whether it’ll be ramen or soba noodles.

Top Chef competitor Dale Talde, who runs his own Asian food restaurant, gave his answer to the Village Voice, as well as a sneak preview of a new vegetarian dish coming to the menu of the eatery named after himself.

“I love both. To me ramen and soba are too different. Ramen is always, for me, good when it’s cold outside. I like soba when it’s ice cold, it’s blazing hot outside (funny because we’re putting a fresh soba dish on the menu at Talde in about a week — it’s going to be one of our vegetarian options: kimchi, ramps, smoked tofu, house-made black sesame sauce).”

Located in the Park Slope, New York area, Talde restaurant already has a ramen dish waiting for its soba component–the Market Ramen featuring smoked tofu, scallion and white soy.

Talde himself is a big meat chef, but his girlfriend is the one who persuaded him to add vegetarian dishes to his menus before. Maybe someone has been sleeping on the couch again as punishment and is looking for forgiveness?

Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka is mad about a lot of things foodwise. Like NYC based vegan bakery Babycakes and the waffles founder Erin McKenna whipped up in her presence. And let’s not forget vegan reubens.

The AMC show’s actress who plays Sally, the daughter of characters Don and Betty Draper, took time off from the popular series that depicts the changing values of society to help McKenna film a video demonstrating vegan waffles.

According to McKenna’s blog, the video is a “super secret BabyCakes project” and will be available for everyone’s viewing pleasure soon.

In the meantime, the 12-year old child star is taking time to Tweet some veggie ramblings about the meatless reuben sandwich at Flore Vegan Cuisine, a Silverlake, California restaurant that features a tempeh reuben served on rye bread with layers of cashew cheese, tempeh sauerkraut, tofu cheese and 1000 island dressing.
