Meatless Mouthful–Melissa Etheridge Connects Meat With Cancer

“It’s actually our whole Western lifestyle. It’s one of the reasons half of us have cancer. Because our Western lifestyle is so acidic–the food we eat causes the acid. The meats, the processed foods–our bodies are made for whole foods. The sun goes in the plant, the plant [in] us, we live. That’s how it works. And it’s really taxing us and that’s why we’re seeing this epidemic of cancer.”

Alanis Morrissette is gracing the cover of the September issue of Yoga Journal.

It’s the journal’s musician edition, and several other veg-friendly artists have interviews in the magazine, including Moby, Ziggy Marley and Adam Levine.

Alanis tells the Journal, “I wanted to find a practice that was both physical and spiritual. Yoga was perfect for that. I felt like I was born to do yoga.”

Alanis got motivated to follow a plant-based lifestyle after picking up a copy of the book Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman and says she enjoys filling her plate with greens like collards and kale.

Many yoga lovers see following a meatless diet as a natural extension of yoga and its principles.

Stephen Sturgess, a practicing yogi for over three decades, wrote in The Yoga Book, “A vegetarian diet is essential for one who wants to follow a spiritual life. If you sincerely wish to progress and grow from the ordinary and materialistic life to a higher spiritual consciousness, then it becomes important to live on a vegetarian diet. For there are certain foods that help the mind and body to become more refined, and others that keep it down to the consciousness level of an animal.”

Sheryl Crow Sings For Wild Horses

Sheryl Crow is donating a portion of sales from an upcoming concert to the Cloud Foundation, a horse protection organization that is suing the U.S. government for rounding up wild horses and burros in the West.

The Bureau of Land Management would like to roundup 1,700 mustangs on the Nevada-Utah line.

Crow’s show with Kid Rock at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming on July 22 will benefit the group.

In a documentary film, Saving the American Wild Horse, Crow said, “I think it will be a real shame when we look back and we don’t have these incredible species, and I guess my best hope would be that people, individuals, step up at this point and really protect these animals.”

Crow has rescued a horse in the past and says wild horses are a vital part of America’s culture.

“There’s legislation going on right now about exterminating these great wild mustangs… (They’re) truly one of the great representatives of our native culture here in America. Wild mustangs are really true to the heritage of this country; they help us to remember who we were.. (and) the government is trying to have them run off cliffs and things.”

Rumor Has It that British soul singer Adele is embracing the vegetarian lifestyle.

But it’s unlikely she will be a tofu junkie.

“I need to start being really healthy… I hate that tofu stuff though,” she said.

No need for her to worry, as tofu isn’t any more necessary for a vegetarian diet than eating meat is for getting enough protein. Vegetarians and vegan enjoy a variety of plant-based proteins, including seitan, tempeh, beans, nuts and seeds.

The Rolling In The Deep singer says the change in diet was also motivated by her love for animals.

“Whenever I’m about to eat meat I see my dog’s eyes.”

Morrissey Comments On Lady Gaga Meat Dress

Morrissey was recently interviewed by the Daily Telegraph when the subject of Lady Gaga and her infamous meat dress came up.

Given the fact Morrissey is a highly opionated and a longterm vegetarian, it was expected he’d have a few criticisms for the Born This Way singer.

But instead of automatically issuing a few choice words about the singer’s decision to wear dead animal flesh, Morrissey took the opportunity to attempt to understand her motives behind wearing it.

“Well, the meat dress was first done by [artist] Linder Sterling in Manchester in 1982, and she did it as a protest at men seeing female flesh as meat. I don’t know whether that came across with Lady Gaga. I think people didn’t question it too deeply – they simply saw it as ‘today’s loony idea.’ But I like to assume that Gaga had the same notion. If it’s a social and political statement, it’s acceptable. If it isn’t a social and political statement, I don’t really see the point.”

The dress worn by Gaga to the MTV Video Music Awards has been snagged by the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and will be on display there.

Lady Gaga‘s infamous meat dress she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards will unfortunately remain a part of music history forever.

The Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has obtained the dress and will be displaying it among other musician paraphanelia in an exhibit titled, “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power.”

There were rumors that Gaga smelled pretty bad that night, and since it’s almost been a year since the dress was made, you might be wondering if Hall of Fame museum goers are getting free noseplugs when they enter the exhibit.

The details of that are unknown, but it’s no surprise the dress is still sticking around longer than Gaga’s 15 minutes of fame. Considering all the preservatives found in meat today–which have been shown to cause diseases like diabetes, cancer, dementia and heart disease–we’ve got a feeling this outfit might be vying for the world record in food that doesn’t decompose, just like the McDonald’s hamburgers sourced from it.

“I’ve seen the video footage released by Animal Defenders International that shows the owners and trainers with HTWT as they hit elephants as hard as they can with bullhooks and use electric shocks on the animals’ bellies. You can hear a grown elephant who bellows in pain and a baby who cries out while being jabbed repeatedly in the mouth and hit over the head. Please don’t allow the reputation of the fair to be tarnished by its support of cruel elephant rides.”

–Joan Jett, in a letter to organizers of the San Diego county fair. The fair is offering elephant rides with animals provided by the entertainment company, Have Trunk Will Travel. HTWT has been found by undercover animal rights investigations to use cruel methods to train its animals, including the use of bullhooks, a practice recently banned in Atlanta.
