Joel McHale Gets Eco Lecture From Kristen Bell

Joel McHale didn’t take a course called Environmental Activism 101 at Community‘s college in Greendale, Colorado, but actress Kristen Bell was sure to give him a mini-lecture on the subject when the two bumped into each other at the grocery store.

Lesson 1: Plastic is bad. Chicken’s even worse.

McHale was interviewed by Bell’s husband, Dax Shepard, when he mentioned the incident.

McHale: I saw your wife at Gelson’s [supermarket], and she lectured me about getting plastic bags.
Shepard: She did. That’s very her.
McHale: Totally lectured me.
Shepard: She was probably carrying around our big, green Costco bags.
McHale: Yeah, and I think I had a whole roasted chicken, and I was like, would you like some? And she said no, I’m a vegetarian, and I’m like, there’s a surprise!

“Substitutes for animal products” is on the syllabus for next week!

Leona Lewis Backs Farmed Animal Protection On UN’s 2012 Earth Summit

Leona Lewis is asking officials of the UN’s 2012 Earth Summitt to put protection for farmed animals on the agenda for the event in Rio in June.

The singer is asking fans to sign a petition created by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) that will place animal welfare among priority issues such as food crisis and climate change.

“I am supporting WSPA, so please support me by going to the site below and joining thousands of others worldwide who are demanding that farm animals are on the agenda at the UN 2012 Earth Summit in Rio. By adding your name, you could help animals have a better future,” Lewis said.

“Farms with poor animal welfare aren’t just bad for animals; they have negative effects on our environment, our health and on the livelihoods of the world’s poor,” reads the petition addressed to the summit’s co-chairs H.E. Dr. John W. Ashe and H.E. Mr. Sook Kim.

“I hope you will agree with me that there is worrying evidence that the continued growth of industrialised factory farm systems is neither good for us nor the planet.”

The WSPA site has included a short video that gives examples of how better farmed animals help the environment and humanity. Free-range egg production in India employs women in poverty. Outdoor cattle use less water and energy. Land conservation is increased when animals live on terrain not suitable for crops.

Russell Simmons Promotes Vegan At New York’s Green Festival

This past weekend, New York city celebrated its first ever Green Festival.

The event attracted over 25,000 environmentalists and featured vendors promoting eco-friendly products like reusable bottles and fair-traded food.

Several speakers known for their activism were present, including hip-hop businessman and reality TV star Russell Simmons.

Simmons, a longtime vegan, reminded attendees that caring for the earth doesn’t have to involve hours of sorting recyclables or investing thousands of dollars in solar panels. Much can be done by simply choosing what to pick up with one’s fork.

Simmons told the Huffington Post that people can use vegetarianism to live “less toxic lifestyles.”

According to Meat Free Mondays, a UK site promoting vegetarianism to reduce meat’s impact on the environment, The UK’s Food Climate Research Network suggests that food production from farm to fork is responsible for between 20-30 percent of global green house gas emissions and livestock production is responsible for about half of that production.

Canada’s flag may be red and white, but the number of eco-friendly celebrities that hail from the country make it one of the greenest places on Earth.

In celebration of Earth Day, Huffington Post Canada has compiled a slideshow of 25 of the greenest celebrities from our neighbors up north.

Singer Bryan Adams and actress Pamela Anderson were two obvious picks, given the fact both stars promote a plant-based lifestyle.

“Vegan, singer and photographer Bryan Adams is another celebrity behind PETA’s campaign on animal rights and promoting a meatless lifestyle,” the article reads.

“Long-time PETA activist and vegetarian Pamela Anderson has stripped for ad campaigns, worn a lettuce bra and starred in anti-fur video campaigns.”

Living meatless may be the best environmentally friendly act you can commit. Consider how much we would save the planet if everyone in the U.S. went vegetarian for one day:

It would be the equivalent of saving 70 million gallons of gas–enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico.
Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2, as much as produced by all of France.
100 billion gallons of water, enough to supply all the homes in New England for almost 4 months.

According to PETA, raising animals for food is one of the “leading causes of climate change” and says there is an enormous waste of energy involved with “feeding, transporting, and slaughtering farmed animals and packaging, transporting, and storing their flesh.”

Other sexy celebrities we like include Will Witherspoon, linebacker for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans who turned a hobby farm into a full-blown “Animal Welfare Approved” haven.

Lisa Edelstein PETA Ad Encourages Eating Green To Go Green (Video)

She’s just what the doctor ordered.

Former longtime House actress Lisa Edelstein isn’t taking a break from the spotlight since she’s left the show. This lovely lady has agreed to a pro-vegetarian ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The ad features Edelstein lying on a bed of kale. She doesn’t mind eating or lying in it, but according to Boston.com, there was another green item underneath the kale that didn’t sit too well with the longtime vegetarian.

Edelstein is allergic to synthetic materials and the AstroTurf surface underneath the vegetable gave her a reaction.

“When I got up, all of the AstroTurf marks had turned into hives,” Edelstein said.

In addition to the photo shoot, there is an exclusive video interview with Edelstein.

“Vegetarianism is a really important part of what we need to do to help the environment,” Edelstein told PETA.

“The meat industry is really toxic to the environment. The cattle industry–besides the fact there are a lot of cruel things happening–the manure is extremely toxic. We just need to pull back as a culture as much as we can.”
