“Industrial agriculture is a part of the problem. Organic farming, relying on more productive, safer methods to put carbon back in the soil, produce safer and better food–that’s a big part of it. The shift towards a more meat-intensive diet is also part of the problem. The clearing of forest areas in many parts of the world in order to raise more cattle–that’s a part of it.”

–Al Gore, in an interview with FearLess Revolution founder Alex Bogusky where he discussed the impact of food choices and environmental destruction.

It’s good talk. Now let’s see Al get into action by giving up meat entirely.

Roseanne Barr made an appearance on The View where she discussed her ambitious goals of becoming both president of the United States and Prime Minister of Israel.

It’s going to take a lot of her energy to accomplish both, but lucky for her, Roseanne knows what to snack on to keep her energy level up while contemplating issues like student loans and making sure everybody eats their nuts.

The actress stars in the Lifetime series Roseanne’s Nuts, a show about her life on the macademia nut farm she owns in Hawaii.

“I truly believe that the macademia nut can save the entire world and solve all the world’s problems,” Roseanne said.

“It’s a perfect protein. It has little carb. It has the right kind of fats that we need to make our brains function better.”

“If people were to get their protein from nuts rather than beef, there’d be no global warming and there would also be enough grain to feed all the hungry people.”

Roseanne also touched on the fact that these little packets of protein are good for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, giving more evidence that she really isn’t nuts. Macademia nuts have been found to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels when included in a heart-healthy diet.

–vegetarian primatologist, philanthropist and conservationist Jane Goodall, during a speech to the children of clients of UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank. The purpose of Goodall’s presentation was to encourage getting involved with philanthropy, animal welfare and human rights. The UBS program is designed to reach out to heirs of the bank’s millionaire clients.

Leonardo DiCaprio Pens Letter To Ban Shark Fin Sales In California

Leonardo DiCaprio has written a letter to the California State Senate in support of Assembly Bill 376, which would ban the sale of shark fins in the state.

In addition to being backed by dozens of celebrities like Megan Fox, Rachel Bilson and Ben Stiller, the bill is supported by the Humane Society of the United States, Wild Aid and Natural Resources Defense Council.

An excerpt from the letter:

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has concluded that a third of shark species are now threatened with extinction of some kind. And recent estimates state that up to 73 million sharks are killed each year for use in shark fin soup and other products. Traditionally shark fin was affordable only to the elite, and consequently the issue of decimation of species was not a concern. But with the explosion of the world’s population, and an increasing number of wealthy consumers, this can no longer be considered true, as has been evidenced by the decimation of shark populations worldwide. Despite fisheries attempts at regulation, the inhumane practice of finning continues unabated too, as does the illegal capture of sharks from marine reserves and sovereign waters.

Similar measures have already passed in other states. Hawaii was the first to ban fins. Washington’s governor recently signed a measure that prohibits “selling, trading or distributing shark fins or derivative products including cartilage supplements.” And in Oregon, the Senate passed a bill 58-1 that prohibits the “possessing, selling, offering for sale, trading or distributing” of shark fins.

The Pope is not as brash as Mercedes-Benz is, so he doesn’t go around bragging about the number of dead animals it took to make the popemobile. But that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t consider trying to eliminate the dead animals that go into it.

PETA has taken the time to write to Pope Benedict XVI, asking him to request the next car the automobile company makes for him to travel in be manufactured without leather.

“As we point out in our letter to the Pope, who has been outspoken about protecting the environment and animals, Mercedes-Benz offers leather-free interiors for all its cars, so making a cow- and planet-friendly popemobile shouldn’t take a miracle,” the animal rights group blogged.

The Pope has demonstrated a good balance between spirituality and science. In his 2010 Vatican World Day of Peace message, he stressed the importance of people being good stewards of the earth, protecting both the environment and animals and suggested “ecological responsibility” should be a part of education.

Will the Pope be ecologically responsible and insist he be transported in a car that isn’t lined with chemicals used in leather production like chromium that pollute water supplies, are known to cause health problems in humans and are considered hazardous by the EPA?

Take us out to the ballgame and show us a pitcher with a vegan glove!

New York fans can now see Yankees pitcher Brian Gordon handling the fastballs with what PETA says is the first player in MLB history to use a non-leather glove.

The glove is manufactured by Carpenter Trade Company and is said to be “breathable, memory retentive, and wicks away moisture—is 10 ounces lighter than a standard leather glove.” It also has the comfort approval of Gordon.

Leather is a big commodity in sports, especially the major leagues. While we don’t have any stats for the number of animals used during baseball season, in the NFL, approximately 35,000 cowhides are used every year.

Gordon’s glove is not only animal friendly, but human-friendly too. Leather isn’t green, as toxic chemicals are used in the finishing process that hurt factory workers in the leather shops and make their way into rivers and streams, putting the water supply at risk.

Long before Lisa Edelstein and Omar Epps became stars on House, there was Noah Wyle, America’s favorite television doctor who happens to be a longtime vegetarian, environmental activist and human rights supporter.

Wyle’s back on a new TNT drama called Falling Skies, where he stars as a history professor turned alien fighter forced to not only defend himself from those of the other world, but free his son from capture as well.

Wyle has spent much of his real life fighting not aliens, but injustices to humans and animals. According to The Holywood Reporter, Wyle has worked with the Human Rights Watch Council, Doctors of the World, the 2004 Cover the Uninsured campaign and the World Wildlife Fund.

Below is a video of Wyle for WWF, where he discusses how climate change is a threat to polar bears’ habitat.

Several celebrities, including vegetarian Alyssa Milano, Anderson Cooper, Lawrence Bender and Howard Ruby will be honored at the National Wildlife Federation’s “Voices for Wildlife” gala on June 15 for their efforts to protect wildlife.

The 75th anniversary event of NWF is being recognized by the Environmental Media Association’s “Green Seal of Events,” because it has taken measures to ensure the event is environmentally conscious.

“A longtime animal rights activist and environmentalist, Milano has supported numerous organizations and served as an ambassador for UNICEF,” NWF said in a press release.

Cooper, Bender and Ruby are being recognized for acts such as featuring documentaries about habitat threats, raising awareness about global warming and world class photography that drew attention to wildlife.

Guests at the event will enjoy cocktails, dinner and an awards ceremony. NWF has also invited some of the creatures it has served to protect over the years and guests will have a chance to interact with those animals as well.
