Ally Shapiro Zarin, daughter of Real Housewives of New York City star Jill Zarin, is co-president of the New York chapter of “Teens Turning Green,” and has created “Project Green Dorm Room,” a guide for frosh and any college students who plan to live in the holding cell otherwise known as a dormitory on how to make the greenest experience of it.

“Basically, our mission is to start a huge movement to stop exposures to toxic environments throughout our lives,” Ally said to Mom Logic. “We try to make people rethink what they do in everyday life, like in their dorm. Just saying you want to be green isn’t enough. You have to get involved and do things actively. You have to change what you eat, what you do and what you buy.”

It’s not known if Ally is on her way to becoming vegetarian too, but with her eco conscious attitude, she’s bound to practice at least some form of Meatless Monday in her life.

Now that you what book to grab that advises on college eating, here’s a guide to what sheets to buy to sleep in while you skip your 8 a.m. class.

Reuse old furniture by painting it with no-VOC paint, such as YOLO Colorhouse.

Ally’s a big fan of using biodegradable laundry detergents like Soap Nuts — just take three, put them into a canvas bag with your dirty laundry and stick quarters into the machine!

Invest in organic sheets. Ally swears by those made by Coyuchi.

Celebrity stylist Chaz Dean was recently honored with an “Angel on the Path” award by the HollyRod Foundation, which provides support to those living with autism and Parkinson’s disease.

Dean is the creator of WEN hair products, a line touted to be free of animal ingredients, all natural and eco-friendly. Well, almost.

Although many of Dean’s products contain ingredients like plant extracts and do not contain sulfates, some of his products contains questionable items like propylene glycol and propylparaben, which have been suggested to cause skin irritation and be an endocrine disruptor, respectively.

Dean is involved with many charities besides HollyRod, including Best Friends Animal Society and Global Green.

He recently spoke with the Huffington Post about his work giving back.

Which other organizations do you support and why?

Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy because they give people who might have never had access to resources the opportunity to expand, excel and develop within their life.

Global Green, which is similar to my concept with WEN. I believe we are at time in our lives that we must be making smarter choices and being environmentally conscious.

Keep a Child Alive because it takes such a small amount for us, a dollar a day, and we can make such an enormous difference with one person’s life.

Stand Up to Cancer. I lost my mother to cancer and I believe in empowering and educating women to be proactive and take preventative measures, which can help save your life.

Best Friends Animal Society because they take abandoned and abused animals and help rehabilitate them. They also help find them safe loving homes.

We already know the kinds of stuff going into Chelsea Clinton’s wedding guests (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) give her points for a green ceremony foodwise. But what about the facilities taking care of things going out?

True, it’s not the most pleasant thought to have, but UK Express is reporting the couple and family has rented several portable “loos” complete with hot water and stereo music. Hopefully, no one will be on the loo so long they can listen to one of those really long songs like American Pie or Purple Rain in its entirety.

Like many other aspects of home living, portable potties can be made green with a variety of options.

Mesa Wastes Services says, “One of the best times to utilize a green portable toilet service are when the event has an environmental theme. Green weddings, for example, have become highly popular. It would make sense to ensure that the porta-potties for these events fit within that theme.”

Mesa says the extent to which potties are greener varies by provider, but some of the main points are that the chemicals used in the tank and to clean are usually free from toxins like formaldehyde, butyl and glycol. Chlorine-free toilet paper can also be requested. In addition, gray water from the sink can be treated and recycled at a waste treatment center.

Pamela Anderson has called Janet Jackson “greedy” for agreeing to be the cover girl for Blackglama’s ad campaign, “What Becomes A Legend Most?”

Anderson told OUT magazine, “It’s disappointing. She has spoken out against fur before. I don’t know why some people stop listening to their heart. I guess some people get greedy, but it’s sad.”

Jackson is keeping mum about the criticism and instead using every opportunity to insert (more than likely highly scripted) positive words about the company that’s paying her to do so.

“What makes a legend, to me, is someone who has made a major mark on the world that lasts forever,” Jackson said. Well, it’s true the coat she wears will probably make a more lasting mark than her on the world in terms of leaving its footprint on the environment.

According to a Peta factsheet, real fur is finished with chemicals to keep it from rotting–rendering it less than biodegrading. Yes, some faux furs are made with less than eco-friendly chemicals, but it also takes 20 times the amount of energy to produce a real fur coat from animals raised on farms than it does to make a synthetic one. And like all animal farms, there is feces galore and the manure eventually makes its way into the water supply.

Kristen Bell has recently teamed up with the Humane Society to promote a program that will raise money for special needs pets.

The actress’ love for dogs was pretty evident when she hired a personal dog furniture designer to dress the upholstery for her own pet.

The owner of Kari Whitman Interiors, L.L.C. created Greener Pup Dog Beds, a line of canine furniture made from 100% recycled plastic with 100% of the profits benefiting Whitman’s animal rescue organization, Ace of Hearts.

Whitman advises that while you’re choosing pet furniture, don’t forget about giving your own cushions an inventory check, considering how much time the pets and yourself may be spending on them.

She told The Stir, “I use washable paint with a Satin Finish instead of Flat which will resist marks and keep your walls looking fresh and clean for longer. Look for low- or no-VOC paints to protect your pups from toxins!”

“Your pets spend a lot of the time on the floor — would you rather have them lying on polyurethane and chemically treated flooring, or organic rugs and eco-friendly bamboo and palm wood floors? It’s really important to consider your pet when choosing furnishing and floorings. For hardwood floors, I love Bamboo Flooring Hawaii — it’s beautiful and eco-friendly. Beech, Bamboo, and Recycled Teak are also more scratch resistant than other varieties of wood.”

Some people mistakenly call eating chicken or fish or only abstaining from red meat vegetarian. Adam Levine calls vegetarian what he promises to do every time he comes home from the steakhouse.

During a recent Tweet, Levine wrote, “Being a vegetarian usually consists of eating a steak and promising that tomorrow I will start being a vegetarian.”

Ah, man. And we loved this guy for gobbling up Ani Phyo’s vegan chocolates on Halloween.

Perhaps the Maroon 5 singer should pull a Graham Hill and eat vegetarian during the week only? The founder of green lifestyle website Treehugger summed it up at a speech given during a TED conference when he said, “If all of us ate half as much meat, it would be like half of us were vegetarians.” And by going vegetarian, each person saves approximately 5,000 lbs. of carbon emissions per year.

So go ahead Adam and be a flexitarian. Save your conscious, animals and the environment by staying away from the steakhouse Monday-Friday.

We can work through the weekend morning after guilt later.

It works to ensure children are not involved in the growing, harvesting or shipment of the beans in an industry where children may make up to 7-12% of the workforce labor on these types of plantations.

Are treehuggers out to save the Earth to help everyone who inhabits it? Or will they take everything for themselves and tie-dye it?

Stephen Colbert pokes fun of environmentalists in this clip from his segment of On Topic: The Environment–Wimpy Treehuggers and Dirty Hippies from The Colbert Report.

He makes hypocrites out of a group of people rebuilding Noah’s ark to raise awareness about global warming, saying, “For a bunch of environmentalists, they’re sure cutting down a lot of trees.”

Freegans–those who eat leftover from the garbage–are not spared as well as the organic food industry.

“I’ve always been against organic foods. If I wanted to ingest something a hippie picked, I would eat an autoharp.”
