Cats and dogs don’t always get along, but Scottie will have to learn to adapt as a cat has been chosen as the new Monopoly play piece.

Fans of the popular board game chose the cat over several other pieces to replace the iron, including a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had written to Hasbro, asking that it replace the purebred Scottie with a mutt dog. In response, Hasbro officials wrote back to PETA stating a character based on a real rescued cat would be an option for fans to vote on as a replacement for an older piece.

“Among the options for the new token is a cat. This token and its design was inspired in part by a cat named Shadow, who was rescued by one of our employees. Shadow recently passed away, so we are thrilled to pay homage to her by using her as inspiration for one of our potential new Monopoly tokens.”

Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing, said of the cat’s new position:

“We put five new tokens out for our fans to vote on and there were a lot of fans of the many different tokens, but I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly.”
