After a controversy over doping, three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has decided it’s just not worth it to have a steak here and there.

The newly vegetarian cyclist tested positive for a banned drug that is used in the livestock industry to accelerate growth in cattle. He blamed it on tainted meat he and his teammates ate while on the road and was later cleared of charges.

Former vegetarian Gwyneth Paltrow is the self-professed Queen of the Thanksgiving turkey burger. So thank goodness daughter Apple keeps mommy in check by refusing to eat any critter she offers and requesting homemade veggie burgers on a regular basis.

In a state as warm and sunny as Florida, you have to wonder why fur coats would ever be brought out during the Miss Florida USA pageant. Many activists have thought the same thing and have protested in numerous ways, including emailing former contestants and asking them to donate their furs.

The work has paid off and officials of the pageant have officially announced that fur has been eliminated from the competition.

Nigel Barker, the America’s Next Top Model photographer known among animal welfare activists for capturing evocative images of the Canadian Seal Slaughter, hosted an event with the Humane Society of the United States to encourage chefs and restaurants to boycott Canadian seafood until the annual seal slaughter has ended.

Not long ago, Vegetarian Star brought you the news about New York Yankees pitcher Brian Gordon using a synthetic leather glove.

The maker of the glove, Carpenter Trade Company, says several athletes like Alex Rodriguez and Roy Halladay are opting for synthetic styles and adds these will be the “industry styles of the future.”

Vegetarian Tour de France fans may be interested in watching American cyclist David Zabriskie during this year’s race. The returning competitor will be adding a second challenge to the 2011 race–completing it with a vegan diet.

Zabriskie has maintained the diet for nine months with good results.
