The Sheriff’s Garden Program was started 17 years ago at the Cook County Jail. After participants learn to plant, water, pull weeds and other tasks necessary to maintain a garden, they earn a master gardener’s certificate from the University of Illinois extension program and participate in a graduation ceremony at the end of the summer.

Anthony Bourdain Says Meat Not Necessary, India Is Perfect Example

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink.

Why do some restaurants feel the need to put beef or chicken stock in a vegetable soup?

Vegetable oil is healthier than animal fat, so why is lard still being used in dishes?

Anthony Bourdain is not a vegetarian’s best friend (during a recent interview, he suggests we have a social obligation to eat the turkey grandma cooks on Thanksgiving), but he does agree that the ubiquitous presence of meat is unhealthy and unnecessary.

Lady Gaga‘s meat dress for the MTV VMAs not only looked disgusting, but smell the part too.

The dress, designed by Franc Fernandez, was designed from REAL raw meat cuts from a local butcher (hey, hey, should we at least give him credit for not making it travel and using more emissions?). Gaga may be hot, but she’s not warm enough to cook meat, and as you may suspect, the raw dead flesh began to smell almost instantly, much to Eminem‘s displeasure.

The rapper refused to sit by Gaga and a source told The Mirror, “Marshall said he didn’t want to be sat next to a pile of raw meat all night. He said it smelled pretty bad.”

The Office‘s Jenna Fischer hosted the 3rd annual Furball at the Skirball this weekend in Los Angeles. The event benefited Kitten Rescue, a Los Angeles based organization that aids in kitten rescue and adoption.

A vegetarian dinner was served to guests who also enjoyed live entertainment, a silent auction and a film about Kitten Rescue. This was Fischer’s 2nd time hosting the event, but she’s no stranger to cat rescue, having volunteered for the organization in the past.

“I started working with them [Kitten Rescue] in 2001,” Fischer said. “I worked with them for two or three years as a foster parent. You open up your home for a cat or kitten that’s been rescued from a shelter or abandoned, and you rehabilitate them and treat them like your own pet for a short period of time, and then the organization helps you find that cat a permanent home.”

“Baboons are highly social and extremely intelligent animals that do not belong in circuses where they are forced to live in cramped quarters and suffer physical abuse and neglect at the hands of underqualified trainers and circus operators. Nothing could be more inhumane and callous than forcing animals to endure a life of suffering simply for human amusement and profit. The Bolivian Government has set an excellent example with this progressive decision and I hope that Bolivia’s actions will influence other countries to implement similar legislation.”

Bob Barker, vegetarian and animal welfare activist who provided financial support to move Tilin, an 18-year-old male Hamadryras baboon, from a circus in Bolivia to an animal sanctuary. Bolivia passed the world’s first ban of animals in circuses last year, giving operators a year to comply and find new homes for the animals.

The old saying that “I’d like to die with,” inserting favorite vice is illustrated in a new Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine commercial that airs in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, September 16th, 2010. The group is targeting McDonald’s restaurants, saying the fast food giant is responsible for the poor health of so many Americans living in the nation’s capital.

The commercial shows a man lying in the morgue with a half-eaten burger in his hand. After a few seconds of a grieving loved one hovering over him, the commercial closes with McDonald’s signature golden arches tracing over his feet with the words, “I was Lovin’ It.” The voiceover then says, “High cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks. Tonight, make it vegetarian.”

Like many politicians who fall down the slippery slope of indiscretion, vice president Joe Biden needs to keep his wiener (s) to himself.

PETA agrees, and after seeing Biden pass out hot dogs to returning troops during a taping of Stephen Colbert‘s popular Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report, the animal rights group wrote Biden a letter, suggesting next time he hand out veggie dogs, citing how many Americans are too out of shape to serve their country hat might benefit from a vegetarian diet.  It’s a great idea, but Biden will never be as sexy as those models on Capitol Hill during National Veggie Dog Day.

“One in four Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 [is] too fat for military service, and research shows that vegans are far less likely to suffer from obesity as well as leading killer diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes,” the letter begins.
