Everyone could use a big wiener now and then. That’s why Peta brought models to Washington, D.C. dressed in veggie bikini wear to pass out faux hot dogs during National Hot Dog Month–without the animal protein. Last year, Playmate Jayde Nicole served up soy dogs and fixings, while this year model Vida Guerra gave the event some extra spice as she dressed in a swimsuit with dangling peppers and offered chili dogs to passersby on Capitol Hill.

It doesn’t get any more patriotic than this.

Between the two champs trying to save the country from processed meats, cancer and heart attacks…Who would you rather…

Will a movie about a solider returning home from war and working in a slaughterhouse turn everyone at the box office veggie? If they’re anything like the assistant director to Ryan Piers Williams‘ film The Dry Land, it might.

The assistant director gave up eating meat after filming a live slaughter of a cow during the movie, according to Contact Music.

Williams told WENN, “The cow was slaughtered and we shot it documentary style. We went to this slaughter house before we started shooting and that cow was going to be slaughtered on that day and we documented it. It was very brutal to watch and to witness.”

Benjamin Zephaniah–There’s A Vegan Version Of Everything

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 in Authors, Food & Drink.

Benjamin Zephaniah gave The Guardian an interview where he revealed although he’s traveled to places as exotic as Beijing to eat vegan, his favorite meal is still a simple dish of butter beans, potatoes, yam and dasheen.

Regardless of where or what you eat, Zephaniah insists anything can be made vegan.

“I can honestly say I’ve not been tempted to give up veganism in 27 years. I sometimes smell a chip shop and like the smell but then feel guilty because fish might be part of it. But I’ll go home and make vegan chips.”

“When I moved to Beijing, to study martial arts, I saw teenagers stroking cats which minutes later would be on their plates. Yet in Beijing I also found my favorite vegan restaurant in the world – Pure Lotus. There really is a vegan version of everything.”

Louie Psihoyos, director of the award winning documentary, The Cove, plans to shoot a documentary on mass extinction, The Singing Project, with the assistance of The Oceanic Preservation Society.

“We’re shooting a 3D film about the mass extinction of wildlife caused by humanity — I think it’s the biggest story out there right now,” Psihoyos said in an interview with Momentum.

He may be right. In an article from Scientific American, 10 Animals That May Go Extinct In The Next 10 Years, threats to the animals existence discussed are repeatedly human based.

The Iberian Lynx, for example, who’s numbers are thought to be around 100 or so, have fallen to habitat destruction, collisions with vehicles and poaching. The Sumatran orangutan has lost its habitat to logging and fires. And no, it doesn’t appear to be arson caused by other angry apes.

Is Isaiah Mustafa Craving Pasta On His Vegan, Gluten-Free Diet?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Isaiah Mustafa embarked on a vegan cleanse and there’s data to show he’ll smell better even without Old Spice by doing so.

The sexy actor from the deodorant and fragrance commercials isn’t complaining about the lack of meat or dairy in his diet. He’s missing the whole wheat bread!

“Right now, I’m vegan-cleansing: no processed sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, no animal products and no gluten,” the former NFL wide receiver said. “I never knew what gluten was before. Now I know exactly what it is, and it’s everything I want!”

Actually, this sounds rather promising. If all the guy wants is a muffin or spaghetti, there’s a chance he’ll stay animal-free once his cleanse is over. But we do feel for him, considering gluten is in so many delicious foods considered staples like bread, pasta, waffles, baked desserts, couscous, cereal, soy sauces and the beloved figure worshiped by the most devout vegans–seitan!

Might we suggest gluten-free pastas to get him through this rough period?
