The People's Choice Awards 1998

Australian actress and animal rights activist Lynda Stoner thinks dogs and cats were meant to eat meat.

She feels so guilty about feeding animals another animal that she told The Scavenger she doesn’t think she can get another pet if it means killing one to feed another.

“Before my son was born I had three little dogs who were vegetarian (during my dictatorial years) and I must say they bloomed and flourished. However with our last dog I revised my views on denying him his natural carnivorous state.”

“Vowed I would not get another companion animal if it meant another animal had to die to feed my chosen one/s. Besides, the grief we went through when Lobo died was it for me. So my life has been blessed with the company of animals but I doubt I will go there again. Perhaps a rabbit…or two…”

The debate over whether a cat or dog can live as a healthy vegetarian has support on both sides.

The Vegetarian Society in the UK warns to exercise caution when feeding dogs vegetarian diets and says never allow a cat to go meatless.

And one vegan cat food brand, Vegecat Kibble Mix, was found to have multiple nutritional inadequacies, especially the much needed taurine for cats.

On the other hand, a 2006 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found cats fed a vegetarian diet usually had adequate levels of B12 and taurine.

Maybe the key is to make and supplement it yourself.

Any experiences or suggestions?

Common Celebrate Just Wright

Rapper and actor Common had his publicist take care of the daunting task of asking about ingredients for his lunch at Busboys and Poets for an interview with the Washington Post.

The Just Wright actor got a vegan pepperoni pizza with soy cheese and faux meat with lots of other veggies on a whole wheat crust.

“I think the way we choose to eat is definitely important,” he said. “I was vegan for a minute and I really commend those who can eat vegan. Then I was vegetarian. Now I eat fish, but I try not to eat too much dairy. I’m excited about this pizza.”

Common shared a story about when he did an ad for People with the Ethical Treatment of Animals that his family and friends saw on a billboard in New York.

“They put those ads up on this billboard in Brooklyn and my friends would ride past it and just laugh,” he said. “It did look kind of funny.”

Apparently, this vegan pizza at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. is darn good, because Common ordered another one “to go.”

And these are some of the most veggie friendly waiters and bards in the district.

Besides “The Vegan” pizza with “vegan mozzarella, mushroom, onion, green and red peppers, vegan pepperoni with marinara or garlic and oil on a whole-wheat crust,” Busboys and Poets also offers vegan calzones, falafel, veggie burgers, vegan queasadillas and coconut tofu bites with plum sauce.

Tickled pink that vegan Scott Jurek broke an American record in the IAU 24 hour running race?

You have plenty of company and a dietitian wrote to the New York Times sports editor to express just how exciting it was to see a man completely free of meat and dairy at the top of his athletic game.

“It’s clear that his diet isn’t slowing him down. In fact, it may explain why he is so fast and full of energy,” the letter writes.

“Athletes must get energy from food, but calories should come from healthy low-fat foods that have enough protein and are high in fiber. Because of its high-carbohydrate and low-fat content, a vegan diet is optimal for athletes.”

A new book by Dr. Katharina Wirnitzer, sports scientist and two time competitor in the TransAlp Challenge mountain-bike race, is meant to slam the claim that athletes who munch on nuts in between laps and weight training will collapse before the race even begins.

Wirnitzer also touches on the myth athletes need the protein of an entire cow during every meal.

“To maintain good health, a daily intake of 8–12 percent is more than enough and ideal for the highly strained metabolism of athletes,” Wirnitzer said, adding that vegan diets “are not only well suited for all phases of life, as well as for top athletes, but if adequately implemented and combined with a supporting lifestyle, also optimally suited for endurance sports.”

MacKenzie Green "Miss DC USA"

MacKenzie Green "Miss DC USA"

There were at least two publicly acknowledging vegans in the 2010 Miss USA pageant.

Neither won, but the fact that two of the ladies were open about their diet and lifestyle to the public still made a good impact on the movement.

MacKenzie Green, who represented as Miss District of Columbia, is a University of Miami senior that loves dining at Miami’s Lifefood Gourmet between her classes for her double major of sports administration and broadcast journalism.

“I love, love, love, love, love, love Lifefood Gourmet,” Green told NBC Miami. “It is an amazing place. It’s all raw vegan, and it’s right off of Calle Ocho. I love the raw vegan pizza. You never feel bad when all you’re eating is nuts, grains, avocado and diced tomatoes.”

“It’s my primo go-to place.”

Guess it’s safe to say Lifefood Gourmet is an option way before the dining hall or student commons.

For good old fashioned college junk food without the freshman 15, opt for the Mediterranean nachos, tortilla chips with Brazil Nut Hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, cilantro, parsley, olives and onions.

Sarah Palin speaks at National Rifle Association convention in Charlotte, North Carolina

Sarah Palin gave a speech at the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention where she criticized animal rights activists, advocates of limiting hunting in Alaska and anyone she considered to be threatening the second amendment.

After all, they’re all shooting deer in Hollywood.

“I have bad news for those groups,” Palin said, according to the Charlotte Observer. “Bambi’s mother is dinner – even in L.A.”

“Where do those people think their venison comes from? The deer didn’t die of natural causes. It wasn’t road kill.”

Why aren’t Palin and fur wearing Kelis BFFs already?

Besides protection, Palin may feel guns are a key aspect of social gatherings.

She once had a baby shower at an Alaska gun range.

Makes you wonder how some really celebrate a “shotgun” wedding.

Christian Serratos Salad Dressing Recipe With Sriracha Sauce

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 15th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Star Magazine Celebrates Young Hollywood

Christian Serratos has a salad dressing recipe you should try tonight!

Judging from her description of the blend in the May/June 2010 issue of Vegetarian Times, the Twilight actress is not the measuring kind of veg cooking gal. But when it comes to spicy, taste is a subjective thing and you have to make your own adjustments.

“You can make your own salad dressing by mixing together some extra virgin olive oil with vinegar and a little sriracha hot chile sauce and a dash of pepper. It’s the best!”

Sriracha sauce is a Thai hot sauce made with chile peppers, vinegar, garlic, sugar and salt.

The sauce itself can go great on vegetarian sushi or pizza and may even be used as ketchup with a little extra kick on french fries.

Kelis MTV Video About Fur Hat And Where To Get Your Fake One

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 15th, 2010 in Fashion, Female Singers, Fur, Videos.

Kelis sounds off on her PETA feud about that famous fur hat in this MTV video.

She says she thinks it was strange she got a letter from them, considering she’s worn “way more” fur than what she was wearing when the controversy ignited.

Kelis justifies her fashion choice with the fact the weather was “freezing” and she loves the hat.

Right.

Perfectly good excuses to buy something killed for the sake of vanity purposes.

Avoid the Kelis fur pas and opt for a faux fur hat instead.

Watch for Kelis’ excuses around minute 4:00.
