31st Annual College Television Awards - Press Room

When Gillian Jacobs moved from New York to Los Angeles to begin her career as Britta Perry on Community, she missed a lot of things about the Big Apple she couldn’t find in LA.

Like NYC’s Angelica Kitchen and its tofu sandwich.

Jacobs misses the sandwich so much, she told TV Squad it would be the number one thing she’d have her friends ship her across the country.

Note: The air travel from NY to LA totally cancels out the eco friendliness of eating a vegan sandwich, so hopefully she’ll only enjoy the meal when visiting home.

“This is gonna sound so boring and bizarre, but the thing I miss the most is this tofu sandwich from this vegan restaurant, and I’m not even a vegan. But I just really miss the tofu sandwich from Angelica’s Kitchen. I can’t explain it to you.”

The current menu at Angelica’s lists two tofu sandwiches, the “Sam or I” and the “Marinated Tofu Sandwich.”

Sam or I contains an herbed baked slice of soy goodness with marinated hiziki and arame, grated daikon, ruby kraut, sesame spread and lettuce between a mixed grain or spelt bun.

The marinated version contains a lemon herbed baked tofu with roasted vegetables, parsley-almond pesto and lettuce served on the same bread choices as the Sam or I.

Chipotle Aims For 50 Percent Local Produce In 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 20th, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Chipotle Shares Double After IPO

Chipotle is aiming to source at least 50% of one produce item locally this year in its restaurants.

The item will depend on both the region the establishment is located and the local growing season.

According to Westword, the 50% goal is up from 2009′s goal of 35% and 2008′s goal of 25%.

The company stated in a news release that it is working with about 50 local, family owned farms to obtain produce such as tomatoes and lettuce.

The locally grown initiative is one of several actions taken by Chipotle that reflect a desire to produce more eco and animal friendly products, including switching its pork supply to farms that do not use antibiotics or hormones, using almost 50% organic beans and using cheese and sour cream from cows not given recombinant bovine growth hormone.

And let’s not forget the vegan meat filling is slowly making it’s way into more restaurants.

While rose hip oil is considered safe during pregnancy, not all oils, such as sage and rosemary are, so it’s always best to check with a medical professional and do your own research.

Trilogy is a cruelty-free company that does not test on animals, rather studies are “undertaken by happy human volunteers,” according to its website.

Jesus Image Found On Seitan (Photo)

Jesus In Seitan

Jesus In Seitan

Jesus has been found on trees, toast and other objects and now vegetarian Christians, scholars and others interested in the most talked about man from Biblical Times can now claim seeing the central figure of Christianity in seitan, which, ironically, is pronounced “Satan.”

Someone sent a photo to Belief Net and PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in an email, saying the image was discovered after unwrapping a package of prepared seitan.

“I couldn’t beleive [sic] what I saw! Its [sic] Jesus on the cross! I was showing it to my room mates and one of them said, “You’re all about PETA, send it to them!”…Thought it was a real sign for this image of Jesus to appear in my peaceful vegan meal–He was the one who said “Thou shall not kill” and I know He would be against bloody killing of animals in slaughter houses.”

Well said, and commenters on the site pretty much backed up the sentiments in the email.

“That’s cool that the person found Jesus in seitan. Today’s meat, egg and dairy factory farms are the complete opposite of what Jesus taught: kindness for all beings”

Emily Deschanel discusses her motivations for going vegan and her experience at animal sanctuaries in this video interview for “Nights At The Round Table.”

“They are considered commodities,” Deschanel says about animals raised in factory farms, giving examples of the conditions they’re forced to endure and the resulting physical deformities that result.

For example, Deschanel mentions how animals can’t even get it on naturally for the sake of mass produced food. Turkeys have skin that is so thin, they cannot even mate without hurting the bird, so they are artificially inseminated instead.

Arizona SB 1070, Immigration Laws And Effects Of Produce Harvesting

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 in Farming, Food & Drink.

People protest Arizona's new immigration law outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles

Will immigration laws like SB 1070 in Arizona lead to a shortage of home grown produce?

The bill that has been deemed one of the toughest in the country, allows state police to stop and ask for I.D. of anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant if there is “reasonable suspicion” and allows officials to arrest if proper I.D. cannot be shown.

One news site conducted an online poll about the bill and received a flood of comments, one of which was:

“If you want illegal aliens out of the us of a, then stop eating all your veggies (organic and nonorganic)…”

The New York Times reported that the Department of Labor estimated about 53% of U.S. farm workers are illegal immigrants.

Not only is worker shortage in the field a possible consequence of immigration laws, but many growers opt to take business outside of the United States entirely.

In the past, cracking down on immigration has caused a reduction of workers in the fields on U.S. farms, with some farmers choosing to grow their crops Mexico where the workers will not be subject to immigration investigations.
