Carol Leifer “Vegetarian Times” February 2010

'From Stand Up to Sitcom'

What would you do if you woke up one day to find your previously known as vegetarian son or daughter sinking his or her teeth into a Carl Jr.’s burger?

Comedian and Celebrity Apprentice star Carol Leifer would have a heart attack–even though her cholesterol is probably pretty low from all that soy she consumes.

“I don’t know how or if I could ever handle that,”  Leifer said, in the February 2010 issue of Vegetarian Times. “The day I see my son biting into a hamburger, you’re going to have to revive me.”

As for now, little three year old Bruno is enjoying the same diet as mom, with no signs of rebellion.

“He loves tofu and edamame. And your kids really do want to eat what you eat.”

Plus, Leifer’s already introduced him to the animal welfare side of things.

“Hopefully, we’ll have inundated him with so much knowledge that he’ll make the connection between visiting Animal Acres and recognizing that those animals were spared from some place.”

Michael Pollan was interviewed by Time magazine where he answered 10 questions on food, health, the environment and animals.

The author of the The Omnivore’s Dilemmna and most recently, Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, was asked about his diet.

“I still eat meat. But I eat a lot less. I have enormous respect for vegetarians, but I believe there are ways to eat meat that are good for you and good for the environment.”

What do you think of Pollan’s response?

Are there environmentally friendly ways to produce and consume a little bit of “ethically raised” meat or non threatened fish every now and then?

Michelle Obama and local students harvest the White House kitchen garden in Washington

Michelle Obama gave a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the Capital Hilton this week which highlighted the need to combat childhood obesity.

The First Lady has taken a leadership role in encouraging healthier habits in children and adults.

Appearing on Sesame Street, she and Elmo urged children to eat more fruits and vegetables.

She showed up to support local and fresh produce at the nearby Farmers Market in D.C.

And according to Jocelyn Frye, the first lady’s domestic policy adviser, good habits start in the home–or at least in the yard of the home.

“We didn’t want to have a garden just to have a garden,” said Frye of the White House garden, according to the Washington Post. “It was a vehicle for talking about children’s health.”

Mrs. Obama’s ideas to reduce the childhood obesity epidemic include ensuring healthier options are in school lunches, encouraging more physical activity, increasing the availability of healthy food in every neighborhood and giving parents and kids better nutrition education.

Would a meat-free Monday be too much to ask for as well?

Simon Cowell Forbids Alexandra Burke Puppy Love

Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball - Day 2

Simon Cowell has forbidden X Factor star Alexandra Burke from getting a dog because he thinks she’s wouldn’t be able to devote enough time and attention to one.

“I really wanted a dog this year,” Burke said. “Simon’s said I can’t have one because I’m too busy.”

Instead Burke plans on buying another home.

Hopefully she won’t turn it into a Paris Hilton zoo and store twenty something handbag puppies in it.

If anyone champions the welfare of dogs, it’s Simon.

He’s been caught on more than a few occasions snuggling with four pawed people and took time to record a public service announcement about not leaving pets unattended in cars.

“We Are Scientists” Keith Murray–Sexier Than AFI Davey Havok

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 21st, 2010 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians.

2009 All Points West Music & Arts Festival - Day 3 - Show

Keith Murray, band member of We Are Scientists, was nominated for World’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2007.

Sure, he’s cute, but unfortunately, his boyish charm wasn’t enough to beat AFI‘s Davey Havok.

And he’s a little cocky about the defeat.

“I’m not gonna say that I think I deserved to win,” Murray told Penn State’s Daily Collegian. “But I certainly deserved to beat that guy!”

Murray attributes his decision to go vegetarian after eating a “college diet” of cereal and gummy bears.

Hello?!

Unless those were some Annie Duke-like gelatin free Sunny Bears, that diet wasn’t exactly vegetarian.

Perhaps Murray bought the vegan version on the campus natural foods store.

The menu will feature a blend of Asian and Italian cuisines with items such as seared tofu, miso soup and smoked mozzarella.
