Another PETA ad has been pulled this year and it’s only the month of January.

The PETA bear cap ad was supposed to be shown on 25 London buses in an attempt to draw attention to the killing of black bears used for fur in making the Queen’s guards’ hats.

The ad showed a guard with a bear’s bloody head on his head with the tagline: “MoD: Go Fur-Free. It can take the entire hide of one bear just to make one cap.”

According to Media Company, the manager of the buses objected to the ad.

‘Tradition’ is no excuse for cruelty, and we plan to make this the year that everyone hears about how slowly the British military adapts to change,” said PETA’s Poorva Joshipura.

PETA wants the guards hats fashioned from faux fur.

Michael Jackson Giraffes Die

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 15th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Michael Jackson Live Archive

Thriller and Sabu may be living a luxurious life in an animal sanctuary, but Michael Jackson‘s giraffes aren’t doing so well.

Two of the animals that once made their home at the Neverland Ranch have died in the past few months, one in November and the other this month.

PETA is concerned the animals died from neglect and is asking the city to confiscate the remaining animals.

“We’re asking the city of Page to confiscate the two remaining giraffes and relocate them to a facility that can provide them with appropriate care before it’s too late,” the group said in a statement.

Foul play is not suspected at this time.

The owners of the land the giraffes were living on in Page, Arizona, Freddie and Tom Hancock said, “We’ve had them for 3½ years, and they are like our children. We’re just absolutely devastated by the death of these giraffes.”

The Hancocks were supposed to pay $100,000 to insure the giraffes, and claimed officials never gave them the papers to get the process going.

The money has not been received and the city is in the process of evicting the couple from the land.

Bethenny Frankel “The Skinnygirl Dish” Easy Artichokes Recipe

Bethenny Frankel Signs Copies of her new book 'The Skinnygirl Dish' New York

Think Bethenny Frankel doesn’t include genuine vegetarian dishes in her latest cookbook, The Skinnygirl Dish?

Then it’s time to check out her recipe for Easy Artichokes.

“The trick is to cook the artichoke hearts until they are really crispy,” Bethenny said, according to NY Daily News. “Before you start making this recipe, defrost the artichokes in the refrigerator. Put them there a day ahead. Before cooking, drain them very well in a colander for about 15 minutes and then press on them gently with paper towels.”

Bethenny’s mentioned before she encourages substitutions, so feel free to use mushrooms if no artichokes are available or any other citrus juice instead of lemon juice.

Kelis Reply To PETA On Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 in Female Singers, Fur.

Kelis dresses appropriately for the freezing London weather as she heads to her album launch party

Kelis was a recent target of the animal rights group, People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for wearing fur and the singer is taking on a Kid Rock attitude in her reply.

Kelis is proudly standing by her liking of fur, meat and more.

A few bits from the blog:

“There is no humane way to kill anything, let me start there. It’s unfortunate but it’s part of life. With that being said, I would eat pterodactyl if you found some and you told me it was meaty and delicious.”

She even takes a strike at PETA’s president, Ingrid Newkirk:

“I found out that the founder Ingrid Newkirk is completely batty. I had a feeling but she far exceeded my expectations. I mean certifiably insane! Lol this chicks will is nuts, google it – it’s a riot!”

Kelis doesn’t think faux fur will feel the same as the real dead animal:

“I feel very strongly about a lot of things such as the sweatshops that spin cotton and the blood on their hands. Btw it’s not just the look of fur. It’s warm as hell and feels glorious, ever rubbed faux fur on your body? Nothing luxurious about that. Then the letter proceeded to name artist and designers who don’t wear real fur. Great! More for me! I don’t judge them, don’t judge me.”

Has this chick even tried wearing a fake before (not counting the dozens of weaves on her head)?

Paul McCartney Nancy Shevell Getting Married

Stella McCartney - Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

Rumor has it that Paul McCartney will tie the knot with his girlfriend of almost three years, Nancy Shevell.

According to SF Gate, a source told Britain’s Daily Express, “Paul and Nancy’s relationship is rock solid and there’s no mad hurry for a wedding. Next year has certainly been mentioned as the most likely time, but neither of them want some big hoo-ha (fuss). It’s almost certainly going to be done very discreetly over in the U.S. and Paul would ideally like to do it without any publicity beforehand. Whether he could pull that off is another matter.”

There’s no rush for a wedding?

Maybe Paul’s waiting for Nancy to give up the pork chops completely before putting a ring on it.

Since dating the former Beatle, Nancy has been spotted dining on vegetarian food.

And some sources stated she even changed her political views and started buying more cruelty-free fashion since dating Paul.

Hornets vs Wizards

George Shinn, owner of the New Orleans Hornets, is recovering from surgery after having a cancerous prostate gland removed, according to Nola.

“Following (Wednesday’s) successful surgery to completely remove the cancer, Mr. Shinn will begin the process to a full and speedy recovery and is anxious to return to the Hive to watch his team play and enjoy the recent success the team is experiencing, ” Hornets team spokesman Harold Kaufman said in a statement.

After being diagnosed, Shinn changed his lifestyle dramatically by going vegetarian and losing 32 pounds.

Will Shinn’s change of diet prevent another cancer in the future?

Some believe so.

Dr Naomi Allen, an epidemiologist at Oxford University and co-author of a study examining cancer rates of vegetarian and those that ate meat, said: “This is strong evidence that vegetarians have lower rates of cancer than meat eaters.

Shinn’s doctor, Dr. Patrick Walsh of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute said the surgery team removed 100% of the cancer and Shinn is expected to make a full recovery.

Rachael Ray finally got on board a year ago and included an entire chapter of vegetarian recipes in her Big Orange Book cookbook and featured a dessert with vegan marshmallows on her website.

She still runs in the opposite direction when approached by a vegan, though.

Jane Goodall–Personal Side Of Public Life

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Authors.

The 2009 Women's Conference - Day 2 - Long Beach, California

This year Jane Goodall celebrates 50 years since starting her work with chimpanzees.

She’s gained more attention from mainstream media through a recent book, a BBC documentary to be released in the spring and a film, Jane’s Journey, to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Jane Goodall Institute was recently awarded a four-year grant worth more than $5.5 million from the The U.S. Agency for International Development to expand conservation programs in Tanzania.

The renown scientist and environmentalist has always worked for the good of animals, even when her work caused a rift in her personal life.

Her son, Hugo, also known as Grub, is now developing an eco-tourist project in Tanzania.

But he once participated in commercial fishing, something vegetarian Jane disapproved of, and this hindered their relationship, according to The Guardian.

Goodall was raised Christian, but feels the interpretation of man having dominion over animals is incorrect, insisting the real meaning is “stewardship.”

Unlike some who identify with the same religion, Jane sees no contradiction believe evolution and God, and feels her work has made her even more spiritual.

“I realised that my experience in the forest, my understanding of the chimpanzees, had given me a new perspective,” she wrote in her book, Reason For Hope. “I was utterly convinced there was a great spiritual power that we call God, Allah or Brahma, although I knew, equally certainly, that my finite mind could never comprehend its form or nature.”
