I too, am deployed in support of OND. The DFAC is not very feasible for our lifestyle. I have less energy and now, to make things even more difficult, the places we could purchase hummus from are now off limits. Yes, soy milk is usually available, as previously mentioned. And it is true that the carnivors do consume all of our soy milk, which leaves us empty for a few days at a time. I have yet to see any form of meat replacement or cheese alternatives. I wish that there were.

Veg Soldier--if you'd like, perhaps we can meet up if we are at the same location?

As a vegetarian soldier currently deployed to Operation New Dawn, I can speak first hand on the vegetarian offerings of the Army. The MREs have definitely gotten better, and there are 4 meals out of 24 available MRE menus that are vegetarian. However, none of these are vegan.

In the Dining Facilities, it can actually be more difficult to find sufficient vegetarian options. Non-animal proteins are extremely limited. As you mentioned, they rarely, if ever, offer tofu, tempeh, or brown rice. Soy milk is usually available, but it is often consumed by our meat-eating counterparts, as an alternative to the shelf stable tetrapak cows milk that is offered.
